  13. Romelu Lukaku's cryptic Snapchat post hints at even more problems at Chelsea Romelu Lukaku has posted a cryptic message on his Snapchat which could cast further doubt over his Chelsea future with the Belgian recently discussing a potential return to Inter Milan https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/romelu-lukaku-Chelsea-future-snapchat-26209257 Romelu Lukaku has posted a cryptic message on social media just weeks after apologising to Chelsea and their fans for an interview he gave in Italy. The Belgian returned to Stamford Bridge in the summer for a club-record fee but admitted to frustrations with his selection whilst also opening the door to an Inter Milan return. He was left out by boss Thomas Tuchel and said sorry in an interview, clarifying his comments in the process. Lukaku's goal output has not been what many expected with Chelsea's title charge also faltering. Tuchel has chopped and changed between systems but has by no means centred any tactics around getting the best from his summer signing. Lukaku posted on Snapchat on Friday with the message: "If you have to force it then it probably doesn't fit". Whilst not clearly alluding to anything in particular, the post will do little to build confidence around the striker's long-term future in west London. Lukaku told Sky Italia back in December: “I think the boss has decided to play a different formation but I have to stick at it and get on with it professionally.” Before also adding: “Now it's the right time to share my feelings. I have always said that I have Inter in my heart: I know I will return to Inter, I really hope so. “I really hope from bottom of my heart to return to Inter not at the end of my career, but when I'm still at top level to win more together". The interview saw Lukaku left out of Chelsea's crucial clash with Liverpool which took place in early January. The Blues came from behind to draw 2-2 at Stamford Bridge and just days later the Belgian came out and explained his comments, underlining his commitment to the west London side. "To the fans, I'm sorry for the upset that I caused," he said in an interview with the club website. "You guys know the connection that I have with this club since my teenage years, so I totally understand you guys being upset. "Obviously, it's up to me now to restore your trust and I'll do my best to show commitment every day on the training ground and in the games, trying to make sure that we win games. "And also to the manager, I apologise, and also to my team-mates and the board, because I think it was not the right moment also and I want to move forward from this and make sure that we start winning football games and that I perform for the team in the best manner."
  14. Yes, it is crazy. This is the only major trophy still contested we have never won, and it is the hardest one to win, as you have to win the CL first just to qualify. All the other giant global teams who are still top flight and who have won the CL or the Copa Libertadores have won either the old Intercontinental Cup or it's successor, the FWCC, except for us and Palmeiras (Benfica as well, but they never have come close since they lost back to back IC's in 1961 and 1962). Benfica, Cruzeiro, and Pool are the only teams to have not won the IC despite multiple shots, but Pool won the FWCC, and Cruzeiro is not even in top-flight football, same for Vasco da Gama, who lost the 1998 IC and the 2000 initial FWCC, but are now 2nd division as well) . I am so sick of having it thrown in our face by Pool, Manure, Juve, Inter, AC Milan, Barca, Real, Atletico Madrid, Bayern, and hell, even Dortmund, Ajax, Feyenoord, Boca Juniors, River Plate, and Porto fanbois/girls. Palmeiras has the same issue with all the giant Brasilian, Argie, and Uruguayan sides. The IC/FWCC means even more to South American teams.
  15. GK , an edge to Porto, but it's sort of close Porto has more CB quality and (less so) fullback quality Palmeiras has slightly better MFers (although 2 key ones are back in Brasil, but Palmeiras has good depth) Palmeiras has better wingers (although Gabriel Veron is out with Covid, but they have great depth) Porto has better CF's (by far, but Palmeiras doesn't play often with a true CF) Porto are better overall due to more money give Palmeiras Porto's budget and they could easily pass them as long as they hold onto their stars we have the bad luck of facing a really solid side, a giant old team that DESPERATELY wants to win the World Championship they are only giant Brasil team that is still top tier that has won the Copa Libertadores (and have done so 3 times, plus they are the all-time Brasil side in terms of top league titles) BUT has never won either the IC or the FWCC Vasco da Gama and Cruzeiro have not either, but they are in the 2nd tier league now, and Fluminense and Botafogo have never won the Copa Libertadores, which is quite shocking given both teams' past history and players back in the day (Garrincha for Botafogo, etc) Chelsea and Palmeiras are literally the only giant (and still giant in the FWCC era) global teams who have won the CL/EC (thus Citeh and PSG are not counted) OR the Copa Libertadores and yet have never won the IC/FWCC something has to give this will not be an easy game at all, especially as we are so hobbled at wingback
  16. Chelsea must learn lesson to silence Palmeiras and claim first world title Their predecessors tripped up in 2012 and on Saturday the Blues face a Brazilian side desperate to win the Club World Cup https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/feb/11/Chelsea-palmeiras-club-world-cup-learn-lesson Palmeiras fans have been out in force in Abu Dhabi this week. They have travelled thousands of miles to watch the Club World Cup and have been showing their colours with pride before Abel Ferreira’s side take on Chelsea, who will be making a big mistake if they show any complacency during Saturday night’s final at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium. This is a huge moment for Palmeiras; a chance, at long last, to silence taunts from rival Brazilian clubs about their barren record in this tournament. The Copa Libertadores champions understand what is at stake. They have long since had to accept that their triumph in the Copa Rio in 1951, the original intercontinental club tournament, is not enough to stop the chants of “Palmeiras não tem Mundial” – Palmeiras don’t have a World Cup – from fans of Corinthians, São Paulo and Santos. There is only one way to scratch the itch: by defying the odds and dashing Chelsea’s hopes of becoming world champions for the first time. History is on the line. This is the only major trophy that has eluded Chelsea during the Roman Abramovich era and the European champions do not need to be told how seriously this competition is taken in Brazil. They were beaten finalists when they faced Corinthians in 2012 and they know that Palmeiras’s fans are going to turn the stadium green. “Palmeiras are huge,” Thiago Silva, Chelsea’s Brazilian centre-back, said. “We know that with the presence of fans here, their team is much stronger.” It is not going to be straightforward, although it looks increasingly likely that Thomas Tuchel will be at the final. The manager arrived in Abu Dhabi on Friday after a negative Covid test, having had to stay in London after contracting the virus, and will be on the touchline subject to the result of a further PCR test taken after he landed. Chelsea could do with him there. They did not convince when they beat Al-Hilal 1-0 on Wednesday and will be in trouble if there is no improvement against Palmeiras, who were comfortable 2-0 winners against Al-Ahly in the other semi-final. “It is unfortunate Thomas was not here but we hope he will join us,” Jorginho, Chelsea’s vice-captain, said. “It gives you more because he is your coach and there is more energy in the changing room.” In the absence of Tuchel it has been up to the German’s assistants, Zsolt Low and Arno Michels, to take charge. The backroom team have had to take on more responsibility. Anthony Barry and Benjamin Weber were both talked up by Jorginho and there has also been help from Petr Cech, Chelsea’s technical and performance adviser. Cech has plenty of experience to offer Tuchel’s squad. He was in goal when Chelsea lost to Corinthians in Japan just over nine years ago and the memory eats away at him. These opportunities do not come around often and Cech has been telling this generation not to fly home with regrets. The issue is that this tournament is still not taken entirely seriously by European teams. It is often viewed as an inconvenience, an unwanted interruption in the middle of a domestic campaign, but that can level the playing field and give hope to the underdogs. Chelsea certainly had the wrong attitude on the only other occasion when they were Europe’s representatives in the Club World Cup. Too many of Rafael Benítez’s players were unhappy with the quality of their hotel and the negativity affected their performance, Corinthians winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from Paolo Guerrero. It has to be different this time. Chelsea are staying in a plush hotel, the sun is shining and there were concerns that it would feel like a pre-season tour when they landed in Abu Dhabi. Would the intensity be there? Or would the players see it as a chance to relax after a taxing winter period? It has not been an easy few months for Chelsea. Injuries have disrupted their momentum, their title challenge has faded away and Romelu Lukaku still looks unconvincing. This, though, is a chance to lift the mood. Lukaku scored against Al-Hilal, Kepa Arrizabalaga made two brilliant saves and the sense in the coaching team is that the players understand what it would mean to become world champions. Palmeiras, who have won back-to-back Copa Libertadores titles, are not to be taken lightly. Tuchel, who does not want to leave anything to chance, is considering whether to bring Édouard Mendy in for Arrizabalaga. Mason Mount and N’Golo Kanté could also return to the starting lineup and the message from Jorginho was that anything could happen. Palmeiras, who lost in the semi-finals last year, are going to be up for it. Chelsea must be ready.
