Chelsea Youth Team - cup winners 2010

As we watch the first team see their season come down to 1 all or nothing game the same can be said with the Youth team. After last weeks dramatic 1 - 1 draw at Villa park it has come down to 1 game at the bridge where the winner takes all. The end of a long cup run for both teams, but who will come out on top? by tomorrow evening we will know the answer to that question.

The Chelsea academy has taken a LOT of criticism especially since Roman Abramovic took over. Not producing young players was something that was said we couldn't do. When Frank Arnesson came in the club as head of youth development the ridicule became even worse, with criticism even coming from our own fans. What everyone failed to understand was that when Roman took over we basically had no academy, of course we did have one but it was one that was very much left to it's own and never really expected to produce anyone. Since then Roman has spent a lot of money on the academy building first class facilities for them to develop in and bringing in the right people to train and educate them.

7 years later we are truly seeing the benefit of that investment. Virtually all the players coming through to be first year scholars are from the younger Chelsea groups and have been trained by the Chelsea coaches, last summer Prosenik was the only signing outside of Chelsea for the academy. Before then the club had to try and draw from outside resources the best youth talent around to develop until the academy was really producing it's own. The best of that group we are already seeing involved in the Chelsea first team Bruma, Borini, Stoch, Kakuta, Van Aanholt all making inroads along with Sam Hutchinson and Michael Mancienne. This is what it all comes down to, bringing through players for the Chelsea first team. And it is really happening now. Most of the names mentioned above were part of the last Chelsea youth team to take part in a Youth Cup final.

The team we will see take to the park tomorrow night are a better "team" than the one 2 years ago. Whether the individual talent of these players will match too see the same number breaking into the first team in 2 years time remains to be seen. But the feeling is that it will be the case. Certainly players like Josh McEeachran, Gokhan Tore, Connor Clifford, Aziz Deen-Conteh and Danny Pappoe have given plenty of evidence that they have the ability. And the rest of team also have shown plenty of evidence too. The talent is there and the football that is being played has been incredible. The results have been very impressive also, below is a recap of the games and the highlights of those games:

So it all comes down to this, 90 minutes of football which will cement Chelsea's academy a place among the best in the country and set on a road that we hope will continue to produce talent for the first team and for them to stay for years to come and be the John Terry of our future. The boys certainly deserve it and are unlucky to not already be ahead in the tie. It looks like it will be a big crowd at the bridge for tommorow night which is fantastic to see.

Good luck to the boys and Keep the blue flag flying high....

Great stuff :). Just read the report on the Chelsea website, it was an impressive Chelsea-side by the looks of it, we really played them off the field :D. We can be proud of our boys! This also marks the occassion that it looks we have a 'golden generation' in our hands for the coming years when they progress into the first team!
