Interstellar (2014)

6.5/10

A beautiful film, but a seriously flawed film.

One can't deny the fact that Nolan is ambitious and smart when it comes to ideas, but his writing is mostly poor and he's not a very good visual director. Just compare this film to the sci-fi giants in which an image can say a thousand words and could be interpreted in numerous different ways, in Interstellar there is no such scene/shot. The editing is haphazard and there is no artistry when it comes to camerawork or shot composition. Much of the dialogue is expository and unnecessary; leave it to Nolan to constantly spoon feed the audience and provide answers along the way, making it impossible for the viewer to meditate or lose themselves in the atmosphere of the film. But that is to be expected from Nolan I guess.

really? i was looking forward to seeing it

it's not clever or suspenseful?

Not really. I guess the fact the basis of the film is around pickpocketing put me off it as well.

I am referring to 2001 and the works of Andrei Tarkovsky, notably Solaris, but Interstellar had elements from The Mirror as well. The last thirty or so minutes from Interstellar is basically a Solaris rip-off.

Solaris (1972): 7/10

very difficult movie to follow, started off intriguing but faded away

Obviously I wasn't referring to these endings in terms of plot, that would be a silly thing to say, but the undertones are clearly there. If you look carefully, both films have a focus on time/family relationships and the consequences that they have on the minds of our protagonists.

The endings to both films in particular have the protagonists confront the harsh realities of the effects that time and space have on their loved ones, though in Interstellar these themes are underdeveloped and not nearly as philosophical or as thought-provoking.

Insurgent. Better than Divergent and there are some good scenes but nothing really 'WOW' or 'OMG'. Meh.

divergent 2: insurgent

divergent 3: convergent

divergent 4: emergent

divergent 5: its urgent

divergent 6: im a surgeon

divergent 7: sturgeon

Interstellar 6/10 - Nice idea (although the final third was pretty ludicrous) and visually really good. Hate McConaughey. Hate Hathaway. Trust the writer to make the woman too emotional to do her job properly, even if she's a bloody astronaut. Not awful though.
