If its 100k thats A LOT for 18yo without any real contribution.

If its 180k then the club is just plain stupid.

I want players like CHO to stay here to become heart and soul of the club, but if he is only willing to stay for 100k+, that automaticaly makes him no better than any mercenary out there.

Terry loves the club as much as anyone but still played chess with the board to get the best deal possible.

Footballers have a short career and unless they go into management won't command such money again., I can't say I blame any player that uses their talents to maximize their income best they can.

Everything around him is hype and promise rather than substances. We are essentially going above and beyond because Bayern turned his head.

Probably however that's our doing, on his side he sensed an opportunity and pounced, which I would expect 99% of people in a similar boat would do. If the club held all the cards and had a chance to shove him on a "modest" wage I'm sure they'd have done it without thinking twice.

Yes but he was already super player and he created respect between the club and him. Same with Lamps, Drogba or any pro world class player.

CHO is just a kid and doesnt warrant that wage unlike the legends above. He deserves around 80k tops. If he actualy wouldnt extend for less than 100k, thats like if Terry demanded 500k given he was one of best in the world at the time.

Money drives all football and players, but one thing is deserved, even if high wage and the other is throwing a ridiculous number while not having any career so far.

I was all for CHO to extend and honestly I dont realy give a shit because its not my money, but speaking objectively, that wage is idiotic. The kid now literaly has to deliver a couple massive seasons.

To have the balls and nerve to demand 100k+ at this situation, you are no longer a kid and a prospect. You have to step up, show it on the pitch why you demanded that wage.

Terry did show it. So did Lamps and others. Lets see if CHO is ready.

Oh I fully agree he has to step up all I'm saying is I don't blame him for playing his (very strong) cards to maximum effect.

Gotta look at it this way...

Yeah he only has 50 appearances but has had some of the most impressive performances I've ever seen from an 18 year old.

Bayern (who don't exactly pay extortionate amounts generally for players) were offering 35 mil for an 18 year old with 1 year left on his deal which should tell you all you need to know.

Plus you've got the inherent value of due to his age if he progresses as expected and leaves he'll be sold for shit tons.

At the end of the day. Footballers are all paid stupid amounts of money. 100k or whatever is ridiculous but its the way of the world. Add into that he's one of our most promising youngsters we have a transfer ban and only 3 other wingers it seems about right

He doesn't even have 50 appearances and tbf, his most impressive performances have been in the Europa League. Fair enough the markets fucked but again what if he has 2 good seasons and wants a new contract, where do we go then? 200K? 300K? 350K? 100k is maybe not as bad as say 180K but leaves us in a weak position if he goes and has a few good seasons and we want him to renew. He can basically just go well I'm on 100k or 180k, I've had a few good seasons, I want double.... I'm not going to agree with the comments about him being a mercenary which is ludicrous and laughable but with modern day football, it does help players secure bigger contracts but still think he has a lot to show now to justify getting that sort of money. I made a joke about United paying Rashford 250K or whatever with his new deal despite having not really kicked on as much as he should have but the chances are in 2 seasons down the line if the club or Callum wants to renew , we will be in exactly the same position. Especially if its 180K a week. Regardless of if hes kicked on or not.

There is no doubt regarding his talent, it was clear to see when Conte played him against Bournemouth and Newcastle, he had something about him but again, hes excelled in the Europa League and looked middle of the road in the PL. I'd like to have seen him do a bit more in the PL before he got injured to warrant the club giving him a huge financial contract like that but the way the market is and also the fact as previously alluded he did have a bit of leverage as we have a transfer ban and 3 wingers etc, has helped him. Lets just hope he kicks on because there have been kids who have penned huge deals and just coasted from there onward, although I don't think he will coast it and he will continue to develop here.

They could have easily said take it or go, if he was holding out for such a wage.

The club aren't normally known for buckling.

As much as I hate Bayern, they are a massive club (much bigger than us) and CHO is more likely to contend for the CL and win the league playing for them. The fact one of the biggest clubs in the world (who rarely - if ever - overpay for players) were prepared to pay £45m or whatever it was for him would be pretty flattering for a teenager. Can you blame him for having his head turned, especially when you consider the state of our club in recent times and how stubbornly persistent Bayern were to sign him? It’s a massive opportunity to turn down. Throw in Sarri neglecting to play him for most of last season and uncertainty surrounding his playing security at Chelsea, you just cannot begrudge him for wanting to leave for greener pastures.

In order for us to keep him, we needed to offer him an incentive to stay - either playing opportunity or high wages. Obviously, we can’t guarantee him playing time given that it’s no guarantee that his form will warrant it, so it appears as though we’ve offered him a generous contract. The worst case scenario is that he doesn’t kick on as expected and we’ve got to reassess where he’s at half way into his contract. Is that ideal? No, but it isn’t disastrous. What would be disastrous is if we didn’t do whatever we can to retain our highly talented academy players, let them leave to other clubs and have them become superstars elsewhere. He could spend three years at Bayern, kill it, then end up moving back to England to play for Man City or Liverpool. We don’t want that. I can (only just) live with seeing KdB and Salah dominate at rival clubs, but I could not live with seeing one of our own academy players do it as well.

agreed. Risky, but necessary.

Begs to question were they asleep? I don't necessarily mean last season, but even before. If the kid is being considered for the first team, why hasn't someone approached him for a new deal? If they had, and they refused, then 1) it was done too late 2) if done early enough, just keep him away from the first team. Weird situation either way.

On top of the blunder above, how much does the "ban effect" must have increased his wages?

Because the club are usually in the strongest position.

This time there was Bayern's interest alongside the fact we couldn't afford another KDB situation which meant Odoi held all the ace cards even with his injury.

IIRC he only agreed to commit short term initially when it came to his first pro contract.

I could be wrong but I don't think you can sign a long term contract until you turn 18 which he didn't do until during last season which is the reason why this has happened and really beyond the control of the club.

By this point he would have seen that despite impressing in pre season he wasn't getting a look in and Sarri had no interest in rotating the squad, hence why I think he was initially hesitant to commit. Then Bayern came knocking in January and we got to the point we are now.

The wages being rumoured are so wildly different, I believe that it will initially be around the £100k mark and there are likely incentives regarding appearances, goals, trophies, international appearances, as well as inflationary annual increases that at some point during the contract he will likely be up around that £180k figure. As usual with anything like this though, the media will spin the highest figures possible to make it sound better for them.

Either way it's a lot of money but Mason Mount has just signed a new contract which apparently is around £75k and not played for Chelsea or at the highest level yet, it's just the way the game is going.

I think it was key to get these young players signed up and committed long term to the club. They have a huge amount of potential and with Lampard they hopefully will have a manager ready to back them and show faith and confidence in them to help realise their potential.

I could be wrong but didn't Josh, Kakuta and the rest of the group we promoted in 2010 all get rises to around the 40-60k mark. Considering inflation that's probably about 150k a week in today's world.
