Ok i have a query!! I never understood on how the betting works, What does '6/4' mean? which one is a bigger probability? I certainly need a crash course on it. :P

Sorry mate, was offline...

Basically, 6/4 means you put 4 on to win 6... But you also get the money you put on back. so if you bet £4, and it happenned you would get 10 back...

Then man city are 6/1 meaning you get 6x your bet. So if you bet £4.00 you would get £28.00 back.

10/1 would be £44.00 etc.

This means we are the favourites, and at 33/1 liverpool are the outsiders.

With the money quoted to get Falcao we could get Lewandowski, Coentrao, Llorente, and Capoue. Keeping in mind De Bruyne's return, Lamps & Cole likely to leave (Maybe Torres). I know what I'd rather happen.

We need to strengthen in numerous positions, signing Falcao alone wouldn't solve our problems.

Yeah but i think alot of their asking prices would rapidly increase when they see us coming as everyone does... I.e. If we purchased van persie it would have been a lot more than 24 million etc.

He definitely won't solve all our problems but it should fix one big problem, and we know what a great striker can give you... Just ask united...

A lot of assumptions being made in this thread.

1. The view is that Falcao will enable us to get into the Champions League next season and that's not something you can say about us with Torres as our main striker. Next year's CL revenue is kinda important so waiting until summer when Lewandowski might be available is a little unlikely.

2. Torres future isn't certain at this point in time.

3. Falcao's £200,000 wages seem to have originated in the Mail.

4. No-one is sure exactly what the recent commercial deals are actually worth. The figures surrounding the Gazprom deal in particular would be fairly interesting.

5. The expiring contracts. Cole will be expensive to replace, but I'm not sure we need to replace Lampard because I'm not sure he has a position in the squad at the moment that requires replacing. We'll have McEachran returning next year as well as De Bruyne. Those are two, young cheap midfielders. I actually think we may well be looking at Fellaini too.

6. The board have done a pretty remarkable job in recent years so I'd be inclined to trust them on this.

I can agree with this to an extent. IMO if we buy Falcao in January we will have to pay premium, that's pretty much a fact. It depends on whether we are prepared to do this.

I'm of the hope that the club can find one or two additions for our squad in January that are cost effective (keeping in mind FFP) but will help regain momentum into our season, particularly domestically.

I'm still a big advocate of Demba Ba for £7.5m and Mo Diame for £3.5m. Both are tried and proven in the Premier League - Ba will add goals and put pressure on Torres, and Diame will provide some serious steel and strength to our midfield. £11m is a relatively small expense and their clubs can't demand big fees because of the release clauses. Looking towards next season and further on, both are good ages to provide excellent squad depth. We could move Torres on next season for example, and buy a world class striker (without the January panic) with Demba Ba a very capable alternative.

I would also look into if possible recalling De Bruyne back, who can provide a deep playmaker option for our pivot (I believe he is at this point in time more polished to play in that position than Oscar) and can also provide depth in options further up the field. It would be a good opportunity for the club to see if he can make the step up here before we go about our transfer dealings for next season - he may save us a lot of money being spent on a big signing!

That's a bit self-contradictory, don't you think?

Saying we can't make it to the CL with Torres is a huge assumption. Saying that Falcao will enable us to get into CL is a completely unfounded assumption.

I just don't see Falcao being sold in the winter while Atletico is trying to finish in the top 4. Madrid have failed to qualify for the CL in the last few years, qualifing for the CL is a major cash crop and Falcao would still be worth just as much in the summer as he is right now(perhaps more if they qualify for the CL). I think Ba is the best option to displace Torres for half a season, and we need to unload Torres even for free as long as someone else is paying his contract.

I think most team will take torres if we pay most of his contract

Huh?

I'm saying that there's a concern over Torres being able to score the goals we need to finish top-four. I'm presuming the reason we're entertaining the notion of spending £40 million on a striker is that he will be more likely to score those goals.

So no, it isn't self-contradictory.

Not disagreeing with what you are saying. But you were complaining about people making assumptions in this thread then you go and make 2 huge assumptions yourself.

Think you're being a little pedantic there. The view is that Torres won't score the goals that we need. That's not just an assumption but a verdict most fans have come to having watched him for two years. They're reasoned guesses more than assumptions. It's the reason Falcao will cost us so much, because there's a view that he will score goals.

Apparently, Spanish television have announced that Falcao has been in discussions with Chelsea all day and is signing a contract at this very moment.

Nothing official as been confirmed yet and no reliable source either. Hmm.

I know that. I've known that since three month after Torres signed here. But that does not prove that we won't make it to the CL with him as our main striker.

It's the reason Falcao will cost us so much, because there's a view that he will score goals.

That is not guaranteed that he would be successful here. In fact, by that same logic Torres should be scoring more goals than Falcao now since he cost more.

Torres was average, actually very bad before we signed him, but people said it's because he wasn't happy and would be better at Chelsea, well that didn't work out.

Falcao on the other hand is in the form of his life and has been for what? 3 seasons now? chances of him scoring more than Torres is huggge.

Like I said, Spanish media seem to know something. Guillem Balagué also said it on Revista de la Liga. Neither club has denies or confirmed anything though. It should be interesting to see what happens over the next few days. Something tells me this is true though.
