Korea 734
Ow very much wrong. He actually is better building play than destroying or ball winning. His consistency, radius, tenacity and technical qualities are way more than good. We can agree to disagree of course. I just base my opinion because i have seen him play since his pro debut.Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HDSo, he's an offensive CM? This whole time I thought he was a destroyer from the comments that people wrote on this board...When I watch the friendly, I was wondering where Witsel and destroyer had in common? How would he compare to MVilla, prior to MVILLA becoming a knucklehead.
Stingray 9,441
Witsel won't solve our scoring problems, or lack of creativity. We don't need just 1 player in 1 position, we need to improve the pivot, the striker position and LB imo. I want to say RB, but we have a RB, a CB is just deputizing there for the time being True. But we have a core problem in pivot, which is pretty crucial when playing 4231. It is the heart of the formation. Our backs worry me as well though (lb as you say). Strikers .... Also, but there you have the coming of Lukaku in the future. If i was to do the triage, i would do a Lb and a pivot player. This is his best quality tbh. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Chelsea Legend 11 4,062
Good question....As of now, I dont think their is any on the market. Mountinho would be good. Cabaye could be good. I would even take a chance at MVilla as well. Germany has a few good studs as well.ANYONE outside of England, lol.Cabaye is a decent shout. So with Cabaye you think we have a squad capable of unlocking defenses to the level where Torres, Eto'o and Ba will score tap ins? If you were to ask me we need two buys, CM someone who provides steel in the centre of the pitch and a match winner. This talk of a deep lying playmaker being the answer is just what people say because they know we haven't invested much money there (VanGinkel and Ramires really) but to me that's not the key because PLENTY of teams are getting by without one, very few teams are getting by without a match winner. Sheva. 5,373
The question is what kind of midfield does Mourinho want. Something similar to Brazil with Paulinho and Gustavo or like Real Madrid with a DLP and a hard-worker.Going by how we have been lining up with Lampard and Ramires, it looks like the 2nd and in that case we don't need Witsel. Cabaye or Moutinho can do the job Mourinho wishes Lampard did.

But it will impact our game. We will be setting up for counter play. We already are tbh. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

I wouldn't say they're match winners - but what they do do is provide the platform for a match winner. Even when United won the title last season, a lot of their fans had Carrick down as POTS instead of RVP. Buying Falcao will still not fix our inability to break down defences. If it had to come down to it I'd definitely rather invest in the pivot than up front.

The Skipper 20,609
Okay lets try it this way...Who are the deep lying playmakers that will unlock the defense for us? Are they available? They won't single handily unlock the defences on their own. They'll provide a much better platform for our team to be more connected, and thus making us a better team overall. Having a proper DLP will allow us to get the ball to our attacking midfielders a lot quicker and thus allowing them to express themselves a lot better. To answer your question though - there aren't many top class ones really available - what I meant by my previous post is that should the chance to sign one appear; we should definitely prioritise signing someone in that ilk over a striker. We do need one of those too, don't we?
Las7 951
Your argument for not signing a striker sounds like:"We should sign Messi or Cronaldo if they become available and not sign anyone in the meantime while waiting because it would be a waste money which could be used to sign Messi or Cronaldo"

I just engaged in conversation over what is more important to sign, a DLP or a striker, and obviously I made it clear that if given the opportunity to sign one or the other I'd go for the former. Don't know why that's hard to understand.

Signing a DLP would help us to dictate the tempo and play, switching play from one side to another and ideally, get our wide players in a 1 v 1 situation with the opposition FBs. That hasn't happened for us and more often than not, we'll see 2-3 players marking the likes of Hazard, Willian, Schurrle etc out wide by the time they get the ball. Imagine a 1 v 1 scenario of Hazard against a FB. Don't think many would get the better of Hazard and are likely to suffer nightmares after that. Moreover, having a DLP in the team would force teams to come out more at us rather than just defend deep and park the bus against us. Otherwise, the opposition risk getting pinned back the whole time with constant pressure and having their team or defence split apart by a through ball for instance. Now, teams can just sit back, defend deep and only have to really neutralize our AMs to stop us because they know the likes of Mikel, Ramires, Lampard and Essien don't have the ability of a proper DLP. And by having a DLP with teams push up a bit more trying to close that player, it will leave a tad more space and room for our AMs to work around with rather than the no-space they are getting now. I wish we had someone of that calibre to partner Ramires.
