Oscar

Hazard would have grown to the same degree, or even more, under a coach who doesn't place massive shackles on him, in my honest opinion. Talent is talent, whichever way you look at it.

But Oscar is talented isn't he? I sort of see the distinction you're making but I think Hazard reached incredible heights last season despite these so-called shackles. Not many players in world football get away without being shackled. Look at Barca and players like Messi often lead the press high up the pitch, yet that doesn't seem to stop him from being probably the best there's ever been.

Oscar has still been unable to do what Mata did in a Chelsea shirt. Whatever way you judge their careers now, to understate Mata's contributions would be criminal.

True, but we can't ever overlook how Mata had a whole team built around him when he reached those highs (imo reason why he was never able to be as effective at Utd), something not even Eden had under Mourinho - let alone Oscar.

Mata is a better 10 than Oscar, I agree, but in effective terms, it isn't to the extent people believe as they often disregard he had a free role here and that makes a huge difference. For Mata to be very effective he needs to have a whole team gravitating around him, free reign to only do his thing and he depends a lot on what others are doing around him. Different problems, but he has the same setup limitations Cesc has. A very ideal setup needs to be in place for him to really flourish, otherwise his slowness to move, extended time he needs to get things done and lack of physicality are easily exposed. I didn't even mention the inability to do any defensive work - as I know for many here, a true #10 shouldn't have any obligations of the sort, something modern football seems to disagree vehemently, but still.

Agreed, Oscar albeit did have an enormous weight on his shoulders to be fair. With Mourinho basically saying 'you're my guy' over that player who won twice 'player of the season' with us. The demands of being Mourinho's no10 are quite different to what you see of how Arsenal expect Ozil to play, Manchester City with Silva, etc.

I can't even believe it was Oscar who played with his shirt against Sunderland. I know he has a good game once a month, but that performance on Saturday was more than impressive. If I was someone who doesn't watch Chelsea matches often and watched last game, I'd say Oscar is one of the most important player in Chelsea's squad. MOTM without any doubt.
If only he could be consistent... But looks like this is his biggest problem.

remember when i said Coutinho is better than Oscar

Rmpr,

get in here

How long had it been since Coutinho scored or assisted? Oscar isn't better or worse, both suffer from terrible and deep consistency issues... But being more flashy and grass always being greener Coutinho's shortcomings are often overlooked. If Coutinho played here he'd be as slated as Oscar if not more.

All that said, I'm not sure if you're serious. My sarcasm radar has been forever broken, either way, always a good time to bring Coutinho, kdb and others' name on Oscar thread. Mata was mentioned last page, so let's bring the whole pack.

Would I be correct in saying Coutinho is just Oscar, 2 seasons ago? Lol.

In the sense that there's all this hype being built around him, but whether it'll be justified or not will be telling. Oscar started his Chelsea career like Coutinho did at Liverpool, being a flare player getting the fans excited for potential but not quite living up to that?

Or do you think Coutinho will actually be what Oscar was supposed to? It seems he can't eve break into the Brasil team.

He's undoubtedly more talented than Oscar, but Oscar is smarter. At the end of the day they are different players although playing the same position.

If he overcomes his inconsistencies he'd be better than Oscar simply because he's more daring, bolder.

Can't say amongst the two of them who has better chances of leaving inconsistency behind them... Some players just take more time to mature...
