Belgium expect Eden Hazard to lead with his feet at Euro 2016

Quote

By all accounts and appearances, Eden Hazard is one of the more easy-going football players around, especially among those at (or near) the top levels of the game.  On and off the pitch, his carefree attitude makes him a great teammate and a fan favorite, but perhaps it doesn't readily suit ambitions such as becoming the best in the world.  Naming him captain, as Belgium have done, perhaps isn't exactly an obvious move either — it's only unsurprising because it's not the first time — but there's a method to the madness.

"I have several leaders. In terms of the captain's armband, I think there are people who do it in different ways than I did. But Eden is Eden... You become a leader with your feet.""For me a leader is someone that when the team needs a player to put his foot on the ball, he succeeds in bringing the team with him.... in order to gain some time and to have personality on the pitch.""Outside, he doesn't need a lot. He needs to retain his personality but in his game he's going to become much more of a leader. Just like Kevin De Bruyne and everyone else."

Hazard certainly led with his feet last season, when Chelsea sauntered to the Premier League title.  This season's sauntering wasn't nearly as successful, but Hazard did show signs of life towards the end.  Everyone's hoping he'll carry that into the Euros next month and into next season in August.

"Eden is still only 25. Look at everything he's already done. I think it's not bad already - whether it's in France or in England. I feel a huge desire in him for the Euros. It shouldn't be too big a desire -- you shouldn't force things. He needs to remain natural. He's someone who's very relaxed. He's an excellent footballer. And all he wants to do is bring joy to his country and to enjoy himself with the national team.""That's what I'm expecting. He doesn't need to be a captain who's going to shout. I spoke about it today -- 'let your feet do the talking.' It's better than any speech."-Marc Wilmots; source: DH via ESPN

I hope Dembele gets to be a starter actually. Tottenham or not, the guy had a very good season.

Witsel will start, next to naingolan.

I would love to see those 2 together naingolan and dembele.

A good thing Kevin is the 3th midfielder, in the past years wilmots would put fellaini on the 10 position.

That's probably the only nasty thing he ever did in his career. You guys play Costa.

He did more nasty things in that game alone!

Costa has never eye gouged anyone, which is extremely dangerous when it comes to eye health and hygiene. Sure he tossed snot, been in someones face (who usually returns the favor) and more. Comparing his antics that don't really hurt anyone (maybe Gabriel lol) to doing something, that can limit your eyesight for life, is lunacy!

You mean like what he did vs Skrtel and Koscielny .. you can't give excuse for Costa because he's one of us then condemn Dembele for doing something similar. That is very hypocritical

He pushed Koscielny and accidentally stamped on Skrtel, both went on to carry on with the game without complaint. I'm not sure you realize the dangers of gouging ones eye in an aggressive fashion.

And I think you need to learn the difference between an open palm to the face/cheek area and a finger in an eye.

It makes no sense trying to explain to you there is no difference in behaviour between the two has fingers were in the literal eye region in both instances I have shown you.. As I said you can't condemn one player because he plays for heated rival and celebrate our own who has done equally as bad things.

Anyway back on topic of Hazard my hope is his form that he showed since injury continues in this tournament and they make a long run as it will give him less of a break and keep him in better shape for when the season starts

France_2016:Chelsea's Eden Hazard confident he'll hit peak for Belgium at Euro 2016

Quote

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard admits he was below par this season, but says he will be firing on all cylinders for Belgium at this summer’s European Championships.Hazard will captain Belgium when Euro 2016 kicks off next month as Manchester City centre-back Vincent Kompany is absent with a groin injury.Despite being forced to wait till April for his first league goal in a Chelsea shirt, former Lille forward Hazard is feeling bullish about recapturing his best form on familiar ground in France.

"Everyone knows the season I've just had, I'm not going to repeat that I've had a bad season, it's over," he said."The last match in which I gave everything was against PSG in the Champions League (in March), after that I was injured."The injury broke up my season a little bit but also allowed me to come back at 100 per cent."Then I finished the season well with Chelsea. I'm arriving at the Euros at 100 per cent, at full strength - hopefully it will go well."

Hazard not only wants to make up for a poor club season but also for not having been at his best two years ago at the World Cup in Brazil, where Belgium lost 1-0 to eventual beaten-finalists Argentina in the quarter-finals.

"Two years ago, everyone expected a lot from me, maybe I didn't meet those expectations," he said."People will be waiting for Belgium and waiting for me (to deliver) but we'll give our utmost."

Belgium will have to do it without Kompany, but Hazard is confident the quality they have in the rest of the squad puts them in good stead to have a successful tournament.

"Obviously we've lost our captain, the leader of the team - that's not easy, like France who've lost Raphael Varane," he added."But, honestly, we have quality in defence and everyone in the team is ready."Nearly everyone is at 100 per cent, we're not worried. And up front, we have maybe the best generation."

Despite being the highest FIFA-ranked team in the tournament - at number two in the world behind Argentina - Hazard refuses to accept Belgium are one of the favourites to win Euro 2016.

"Favourites, no, I don't think so," he said"France are playing at home, Spain, Germany and then maybe we're just behind."
