I have never seen mainstream, centrist, corporate American media (anyone who characterises them as some sort of 'ultra-lefty pack of socialists/commies' is literally insanely brainwashed and they are exhibiting some of the exact behaviour that is a root cause of it all) as freaked out as they are now. My parents absolutely agree, as do my closest American friends who are politically aware.

Almost across the board they seem resigned to (unless something massive and basically constitutionally impossible intervenes) the fact that the US is well down the path to an ultra violent civil war at a multiplicity of levels. The only real thing they are debating is how soon before it starts to kick off. Within 5 to 15 years max seems to be the consensus.

Biden (NOT calling him mainstream media btw) today said that Facebook and other social media is literally killing people and ripping the nation apart, BUT he has no answer (1st Amendment and all that). Most of the elected Dems seem like paralysed like deer in the headlights. The Democratic Party power structure, by design, blocks the progressives, who are sounding the alarm, from any meaningful legislation (and the odds are high the now radical right wing-stuffed Federal courts slam it down anyway).

It is a giant ever-grinding downward clusterfuck. The US is so so much harder to turn around once the centre of gravity turns toward the bad than any other advanced Western nation. Straight-jacketing checks and balances may well be a national suicide pact.

Throughout the last 7,000 or so years (so going back to 5,000 BC) of human history, the average empire lasts 250 years, when all are added up and measured out. If you date the US as truly starting in September 1787 (when the US Constitution was written up), 250 years occurs in 2037, or 16 years from now. If you count it as starting July 4, 1776 (the signing of the Declaration of Independence), then 250 years comes just 5 years from now.

Labour MP Dawn Butler kicked out of Commons for calling Boris Johnson a 'liar'

Brent Central MP Dawn Butler broke the boundaries of parliamentary etiquette by claiming Boris Johnson had "lied... over and over again" during a Commons debate on Thursday

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/labour-mp-dawn-butler-kicked-24596017

Labour MP Dawn Butler has been asked to leave the House of Commons for the remainder of the day after refusing to withdraw claims about Boris Johnson.

The Member of Parliament for Brent Central said the Prime Minister has "lied to the House and the country over and over again".

Ms Butler was ordered to withdraw from the chamber by temporary deputy speaker Judith Cummins following her remarks in a debate this afternoon.

Members were discussing the prospect of a public inquiry into the government's handling of the pandemic.

It is considered not within the boundaries of parliamentary etiquette to call another member a liar.

Since parliament was just about to go into summer recess, Butler's suspension effectively lasted an hour, and she was unrepentant on Twitter.

Johnson's "disputed claims" Butler referred to are based on the fact that she has functioning eyes, ears and memory, but her statements were also prompted by a video from lawyer/filmmaker Peter Stefanovic which has gathered 27 million views on social media since it was released in early April, when it prompted Caroline Lucas MP and five other Westminster party leaders to ask the Speaker for a vote on an inquiry into Johnson’s "consistent failure to be honest" on the floor of the house:

Priti Patel’s position “untenable” following Police Federation vote of no confidence – Nick Thomas-Symonds

https://labour.org.uk/press/priti-patels-position-untenable-following-police-federation-vote-of-no-confidence-nick-thomas-symonds/

Nick Thomas-Symonds MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, has today written to the Home Secretary saying that her position is “untenable” following a vote of no confidence from the Police Federation, and demanded action on police pay while setting out key areas in which Priti Patel has failed the police.

The letter follows the Police Federation of England and Wales today, 22 July, declaring ‘no confidence’ in the Home Secretary due to her failure to allow the Police Remuneration Review Body to consider awarding a pay increase to Police Officers.

In his letter, the Shadow Home Secretary states “it is little wonder that policing representatives have lost faith in you as Home Secretary and the process you have overseen with the Police Remuneration Review Body….I know [police representatives] are deeply hurt by the final offer.”

He goes on to say that the Home Secretary’s position is “untenable” following a range of key failings of frontline officers and that urgent action is required which must include “opening negotiations on a fair police pay rise.”

This is not the first time that the police have been let down by this Home Secretary. During the early stages of the vaccine rollout, the Home Secretary publicly stated that police officers should be prioritised for receiving the vaccine. When it was revealed that age and vulnerability, and not profession, would be prioritised for vaccine roll-out, the Police Federation stated that they felt a “deep sense of betrayal”.

In recent weeks, the Home Secretary has been accused of misleading the House of Commons when she said that she had consulted the Police Federation in the work of developing the Clauses relating to Public Order in the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill. Yet the Police Federation have confirmed that they had never provided either a written submission or been consulted upon the issues of protest.

The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill also legislates for the creation of a Police Covenant. Labour has long argued that it is inappropriate for a Government Minister to Chair the Police Covenant. Mr Thomas-Symonds MP, in his letter, outlines that “the constitution of the Police Covenant must change and an independent Chair be appointed.”

Nick Thomas-Symonds MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, said:

“It is the height of hypocrisy for the Home Secretary to praise the police in public with warm words, but let them down so badly when it comes to meaningful action. So it is no surprise that the Police Federation have taken the extraordinary step of confirming that they have lost confidence in Priti Patel.

“The truth is it is not just on pay where police officers have been let down.

“We also saw the Home Secretary promise action on getting priority access to vaccines for police and failed to deliver, in addition to taking the name of police representatives in vain, by suggesting they had been calling for additional powers to police protests, which was not the case. Little wonder the Conservatives are trying to mark their own homework, by having one of their own Ministers chair the new Police Covenant, this is clearly wrong.

“The Home Secretary’s position is clearly untenable, and the police deserve nothing less than urgent action from the Prime Minister and this government. This must include opening negotiations on a fair police pay rise and work to reconstitute the Police Covenant.”

CRAZY RIGHT WINGERS:

There used to be the Tejero Blanco crowd some decades ago. The slogan was that "one sergeant" was needed to make the trains run on time.
Then the racists and anti-immigrants, but there was some overlapping between the two.
Anyway this is standard right wing theology, so let it be.

But now the antivaccine demonstrations coupled with nationalist slogans !
Facebook and tweeter work overtime to close accounts and remove posts with fake news.
What's this ?
Never seen in before.

I guess if we lived back in the days of the black death and we were in a castle quarantined and surrounded by archers we would all like to get away.
But deny the plague and deny medicines as well ???

David Cameron ‘made more than £7m’ from Greensill Capital before firm collapsed

https://www.heraldscotland.com/politics/19502127.david-cameron-made-7m-greensill-capital-firm-collapsed/

David Cameron is reported to have made 10 million US dollars (£7.2 million) from Greensill Capital before the company collapsed in March.

The former Prime Minister was revealed to have made 4.5 million dollars (£3.25 million) after cashing in shares from the company in 2019, and a salary of roughly one million dollars a year for work as a part-time adviser.

The BBC’s Panorama programme has reportedly obtained a letter between the firm and the former prime minister detailing the value of his shares.

Mr Cameron is believed to have made approximately 10 million dollars before tax from Greensill over a two-and-a-half year period.

His spokesman said the former PM’s finances were a private matter, but added he “deeply regrets” Greensill’s collapse.

Mr Cameron began his role as an adviser to Greensill in August 2018, just over two years after he resigned as prime minister in July 2016.

The firm’s founder, Lex Greensill, advised the Government during Mr Cameron’s time in No 10 but he denied he had been offered a role while in office.

Greensill provided so-called supply chain finance to businesses, which meant the finance firm would pay a company’s invoice immediately after it was sent, cutting out the usual delay which can restrict companies’ cash flows.

The firm was the main financial backer to GFG Alliance – a group of companies controlled by the steel magnate Sanjeev Gupta, which borrowed around $5 billion from Greensill.

But Greensill used its own cash to cover repayments GFG couldn’t afford, according to Panorama.

David Cameron lobbied the UK Government to act as a new investor for the firm, texting ministers including the Chancellor Rishi Sunak, as well as Boris Johnson’s senior adviser Sheridan Westlake, and deputy Bank of England governor Sir Jon Cunliffe.

The Bank of England turned Greensill down, but in June 2020 Greensill was approved as a lender under a Government scheme designed to get emergency cash to companies affected by the Covid pandemic.

Greensill collapsed in March 2021, leading to a series of inquiries into Mr Cameron’s conduct and what had happened to the firm.

A statement from Mr Cameron’s spokesman said: “David Cameron deeply regrets that Greensill went into administration and is desperately sorry for those who have lost their jobs.

“As he was neither a director of the company, nor involved in any lending decisions, he has no special insight into what ultimately happened.

“He acted in good faith at all times, and there was no wrongdoing in any of the actions he took. He made the representations he did to the UK Government not just because he thought it would benefit the company, but because he sincerely believed there would be a material benefit for UK businesses at a challenging time.

“He had no idea until December 2020 that the company was in danger of failure.”

The statement added: “David Cameron has been clear all along that there are important lessons to be learnt from this whole episode and, as such, he has been pleased to provide evidence to the Government’s Boardman Inquiry, and to two Parliamentary Select Committees.

“Both the Treasury Select Committee and the Boardman Report have since confirmed that he broke no rules. The Boardman Report also makes plain that he played no role in bringing Lex Greensill into government.”

Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner said it was “ludicrous” that Mr Cameron “walked away with $10m for two-and-a-half years’ part-time work for a company that collapsed, risking thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ money.”

She added: “The fact that David Cameron was cleared of any wrongdoing, proves that the rules that are supposed to regulate lobbying are completely unfit for purpose. It’s created a wild west where the Conservatives think it’s one rule for them and another for everyone else.

“The system causes more harm than good by giving a veil of legitimacy to the rampant cronyism, sleaze and dodgy lobbying that is polluting our democracy under Boris Johnson and the Conservatives.

“This is money most of us cannot even imagine, but for David Cameron it was just a part-time gig using his Tory contacts for huge personal gain.”

The Treasury Select Committee of MPs said in May that Mr Cameron showed a “significant lack of judgment”, although he was cleared of breaking lobbying laws.
