Not fair... he pads his stats with own goals!

Seriously though I think Cahill is very weak 1v1 but in our current formation he's allowed to be more of a covering defender and he's been just fine there.  I definitely admit his attitude and goal scoring abilities are praise-worth.

Gary Cahill is ‘one of the worst defenders I’ve seen in one-v-one situations’, according to former Stoke left-back Mike Pejic.

I remember Mike Pejic an extremely average defender. It's just a case of a bitter ex pro looking for a bit of punditry work so he comes out with over the top comments like this. Gary Cahill has won everything possible at club level and represented England in World Cups and Euro's and is very well off not bad for a so called average player. Pejic is probably a potman in his local working man's club.

Funny thing is, Pejic isn't wrong about his assessment of Cahill. It's not like we haven't moaned about the same things over the years.

And are people seriously using the 'he's won everything at club level. he's captained the club to titles' reason as justification that he's actually good? By that logic, guess the likes of Wes Brown, John O'Shea are world class players.

Not world class, but not as bad as this guy is making him out to be. Feeling sorry for the goalkeeper because GC was in front of him? This guy should feel sorry for himself first and foremost. Gary gave his all this season, he went through a bad slump early on, but picked himself back up and went on to rectify those mistakes with some quality performances. We as Chelsea fans should defend our skipper from unprovoked attacks like this. He could have made his not-wrong point more politely, but instead opted to catch some headlines using our player as a scapeoat.

He may have went OTT with the comments but he's not wrong about this part...

...one of the worst defenders I’ve seen in one-v-one situations. ‘He gets so easily exposed and it was him, as much as David Luiz, who needed the protection of a three-man defence in that Chelsea rearguard last season.

I realy wonder what will happen to our defense this season. Cahill on paper is weak link, but still put in some very good performances in crucial games, he is our captain now and only english starter.

Everybody knows that, he just decided to act all smart and attack our player in the process.

TBF, we don't know how the whole thing took place and the context to begin with.

I just can't see us bringing in another expensive CB that'll push Cahill out of the team. Unless Conte is cold blooded and benches the player who was captain in a title winning side and was a mostly solid 7 out of 10 guy. Would be really harsh on him, tbf.

If we want to become an elite side we need an upgrade on him, though. Or maybe if we can land Alex Sandro + Bakayoko itll provide more protection for him and we won't need to replace him at all.

Cahill might not be exactly world class and does have weaknesses against quick, skillfull. Yes he lacks mobility and has a very average acceleration and takes too long to turn because of his top-heavy physique and high centre of gravity. But claiming we build the 3-4-3 to accomodate his and David Luiz's weaknesses is Bullshit. Their decent pace (for defenders that is and in Cahill's case only pure straight-line speed), passing range and ball carrying ability only made it possible. The 3-4-3 was build to cover to flanks and give Hazard the necessary freedom.

It's not a question of how good Cahill is everyone knows his limitations. It's more the case of someone like Mike Pejic who like I said was a very average footballer having a go at someone like Cahill it's like a pub singer saying he doesn't rate the Beatles. Cahill has benefited having class players around him at Chelsea and when he plays for England he struggles because he's playing in frankly an average team. You seem to be hinting that you think Cahill is absolutely useless which is unfair I agree he's not brilliant but you can't argue with what he's achieved it's pretty impressive average player or not.

I don't see how it's bullshit ? I would feel a lot less comfortable if we switched to a back four and had Cahill and Luiz as our 2 cb's. Cahill is too passive and Luiz can be too agressive at times for a back four.

Ofcourse it wasn't THE reason but i'm sure it was one of them along with like you said to cover the flanks and allow freedom for our attackers.

We also didn't have a proper left back as Alonso was poor there so we switched to allow him to play in a more natural position.

Then there's also Kante who in the 4-3-3 was way too restricted. The 3-4-3 allowed him a lot more freedom to chase and press.

He wrote it in a column in the local paper in Stoke so he's achieved what he knew would happen write something controversial and you get publicity. Yes that bastion of all great newspapers the Stoke Sentinel.

its true, cahill has overachieved massively in his career, only signed for his nationality, wouldn't look out of place at a relegation threatened club or midtable. Think we could replace him with gibson comfortably if needed
