exactly, it would have been awkward if they had said no. i can guarantee you a player of benayoun's quality wouldn't dare demand the famous number 10 at a club he thought was important.

benayoun thought he was a big enough player to dare to ask for the number 10 shirt, clearly he thinks he's bigger than the club and thinks he's a guaranteed first team player. those doubting this are looking at the matter through a very one dimensional view.

11 is an acceptable strikers number, benzema is 11 for madrid as well but sidwell and boulahrouz wearing peter osgood's number 9 on the other hand is nothing short of a disgrace. a player like kakuta or even a big name signing would have really benefited from having the 10 shirt imo, in more ways than one.

well if that is the case we won't be signing any big names, kenyon may have left but every big club saves first team numbers for planned upcoming signings.

possibly, i would imagine they literally asked benayoun what number he wanted, and he asked for the number 10. If he considered chelsea a big club he wouldn't have had the guts to pick that number. I can imagine it now.. smiling like a cheshire cat as he took the most famous first team number in football history.
