Don't see the 4-2-2-2 as a long term solution. leaves the wings too vulnerable. I think it was more a one-off to surprise spurs and dominate their dogged midfield. Obviously it depends how wide the no.10s go in the transition but IMO it helps when there are designated wingers. Also I think if you have a good no.10, one is enough. 4-2-3-1 might be a good shout vs Palace. It's actually my favourite system to play in games where you are not the underdog bc of the security it gives in the middle and the versatility of options in the channels. We are just missing actual wingers for it to be maximally effective. Pulisic and CHO are our only actual wingers. Mount and Ziyech are too slow and Werner is not technical enough.

Can only see Havertz Rom working with someone who does a lot of off-the ball running like Pulisic and maybe Mount. Definitely not with Ziyech. Also would help tons if we had someone to provide width. Maybe try Kenedy as LWB. Wont be a better game for him to make a cameo than Palace.

I doubt they are gonna put another game in midweek on this short notice. would be absolute madness. Last season when Bayern came back from the CWC, then had a game in midweek they looked extremely exhausted and only managed a draw vs Bielefeld. i had the subjective feeling that we got into the their box more consistently with lukaku on compared to when we played without a traditional line but yeah, his lay offs are often inaccurate. Giroud was far better at this but then again Lukaku is a lot faster (if he does eventually run at least) and teams can't push their line high when lukaku plays. As I said the player itself is shit but the way he plays does keep opposition defences occupied and deep. Similar to Werner. Everybody knows he will scuff every shot but you still can't just let him run freely on goal or play a high line and allow his runs behind.

Great day overall. We were finally crowned world champions, ManUre drew in the derby of Ralfs, Real drew and BAyern lost embarrassingly.

Dislike this guy just as much but it has to be said that we had a bit more offensive thrust with him than with werner. He usually does nothing with the ball himself but he keeps 2-3 defenders occupied every time and this allows spaces. I hope a miracle happens and we somehow get rid of him in summer but until then we should build on this tournament and use his strengths.

But did they really ever look like scoring from open play? in hindsight after rewatching it looked to me like their attackers completely fluffed their lines whenever they came near Mendy. The pressure was to much for them. If we had not gifted them a pen, they never looked confident enough to score. Obviously we will not go far in the CL on current form and with out most important players out. maybe RJ's return will give us a bit of an edge back but i don't expect us to challenge for the big titles atm. The team is a bit in transition and we need to be smarter in the transfer window in summer. the objective for the season for me was to mop up the title that eluded us last time, super cup and now the club world cup and we did. Get a top 4 finish and everything else is bonus now
