JOSE MOURINHO should today make his first trip back to Stamford Bridge since he was sacked. The Special One flew into London last night and intends to spy on the Blues' derby against Fulham. His Inter Milan side face a clash with Chelsea at the last 16 stage of the Champions League. Mourinho left Chelsea in September 2007 - but can expect a fantastic reception from supporters if he is spotted inside the stadium. He won two league titles, the FA Cup and two Carling Cups during his three years in London. Defender Branislav Ivanovic is set to be handed a new contract by Chelsea in order to head off interest from Real Madrid in next month's transfer window. The Spaniards were looking to sign the 25-year-old next month after their influential defender Pepe was ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. But Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has become an admirer of Ivanovic and is determined to keep him at the club, especially as right-back Jose Bosingwa is facing another two months on the sidelines with his knee problem. Ivanovic, who joined Chelsea for £9.7million from Lokomotiv Moscow in January 2007, made a slow start to his career at Stamford Bridge; however he has become an increasing influence on the first team over the past 12 months. Ancelotti sees the right-back as vital to his first-team plans and Chelsea want to tie the player down to a new long-term deal. As it stands, he will only have one year left on his contract at the end of this season but Chelsea will hope to extend it by another four years. Ivanovic is believed to be keen to commit his long-term future but admits Chelsea, who face Birmingham on Boxing Day, need to address their recent poor form which has seen them win just once in the last five games. Ancelotti's side have a four-point lead over Manchester United going into the Christmas programme and Ivanovic believes the title can be effectively wrapped up in the next month with a series of strong displays. Fault "It is a very strong league," said Ivanovic. "There are great teams, not just the big four. When you play away at the home of small teams you have to work hard because they defend strongly and try to score off set-pieces." His words are particularly apt as Chelsea have been at fault from several dead-ball situations this season. "You have to play every game to the maximum because, in the Premier League, they are all strong teams," he added. "If something happens and you don't win, then the teams near to you in the league are very strong and can catch you. "If you relax one per cent, you can lose goals and the result looks so different than if you played to your maximum. "It is difficult to explain but I think that is why the Premier League is one of the best - for me the best in the world. "I think you can win the title in December and January with the right performances. We are ready for the fight. We can do a very good job in this period if we are concentrated on every game." Chelsea captain John Terry says former Blues boss Jose Mourinho will receive a rapturous reception when the Inter Milan boss makes his eagerly anticipated return to Stamford Bridge in the Champions League. Mourinho, who left Chelsea by mutual consent in September 2007, never got the chance to bid supporters farewell, but Inter travel to south west London on March 16 in the second leg of their last 16 clash. As the most successful coach in Chelsea's history, Mourinho won back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006 - and Terry expects the crowd to show their appreciation. 'It's a great draw because the fans never got the chance to send Jose off the way they would have liked,' said Terry. 'He's idolised by the Chelsea fans, the players and by everyone at the club. He took us on to another level and it's going to be a special occasion when he comes back. 'He is certainly the best manager I have worked with and every other Chelsea player who played under him will say exactly the same thing. 'At the same time it's a tough draw. They're going well in Italy but we feel we can win,' Terry said. Read more: http://www.dailymail...0#ixzz0aboBICWH Well said JT

Blackburn Rovers hope to extend Franco Di Santo's loan deal after Chelsea indicated they do not require the Argentinian striker to cover for their losses at the African Cup of Nations in January. The 20-year-old is due to return to Stamford Bridge on 31 December after a productive loan spell at Ewood Park in which, despite scoring only once in the Premier League, he has become a regular starter. Chelsea originally insisted on a limited loan period given Didier Drogba's and Salomon Kalou's international commitments in Angola next month. However, talks over an extension have progressed smoothly in recent days, with Di Santo's regular first-team opportunities at Blackburn an influential factor for Chelsea, and an agreement is believed to be close. A permanent deal is not on Rovers' agenda at this stage. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/dec/22/franco-di-santo-blackburn-Chelsea

Chelsea will intensify their attempts to reach an agreement with Atlético Madrid for the transfer of Sergio Agüero over the next few days amid fears that they could be gazumped by Manchester City. Agüero’s advisers have informed Chelsea that City have also made an inquiry about the Argentina striker, who scored two brilliant goals against the West London club in the 2-2 Champions League draw in Madrid last month. Atlético are asking £50 million for the 21-year-old, with Chelsea nowhere near meeting that valuation. Many at Chelsea have painful memories of being humiliated by City when Sheikh Mansour’s club bought Robinho as the transfer window closed 15 months ago, and are determined to prevent a repeat, having been tracking Agüero for more than a year. Chelsea were unable to agree terms with the player or his club last year, but are hopeful of success next month because Atlético have debts of £275 million and are out of the Champions League. They would consider loaning Agüero back to the Spanish side for the remainder of the season, assuming that the price was right. Chelsea are aware that they cannot compete with City on transfer fees and wages, so want to push through a deal quickly or refocus on alternative targets such as Edin Dzeko, Wolfsburg’s Bosnia-Herzegovina striker. With Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou leaving to join Ivory Coast for the African Nations Cup after the fixture against Fulham on Monday, Chelsea need attacking options. Michael Ballack believes that Daniel Sturridge could be the answer. “Yes he can [step up] — he has to,” Ballack said of the 20-year-old who joined from Manchester City in the summer. “We will miss Didier as well as Kalou. Hopefully the players behind them, like Daniel, have the quality to close this gap.” http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/article6964483.ece

Chelsea could hijack West Ham’s attempts to lure Luca Toni to the Premier League it was reported today. The Bayern Munich striker has been told he can leave in January after his relationship with boss Louis van Gaal was deemed unworkable. Although the Italian would prefer a return to Serie A, he’s been strongly linked with a move to West Ham ever since it became clear he would be allowed to move on. Gianfranco Zola is desperate to boost his strike force with his team struggling at the wrong end of the table. Yet reports today in Italy suggest Chelsea are showing signs of interest. Manager Carlo Ancelotti is eager to provide some cover for Didier Drogba during the Africa Cup of Nations and Toni could resolve the issue. That he would simply be a short-term solution may concern the 32-year-old who is eager for first-team football to push his chances of a place in the Italy squad for the World Cup. (Independent) This strikes me as a very wise move by Carlo Ancelotti. Not only will Chelsea net themselves a proven striker who is perfectly built to do well in the Premier League but in Luca Toni they have a great short term replacement for African Nations Cup bound Didier Drogba. Quite why Italian International Toni is unable to secure a regular run out at Bayern Munich is beyond me, the former Fiorentina man has been a veritable goal machine at the Allianz Arena but can’t buy a break from new boss Louis Van Gaal. Chelsea will be looking to cement their place at the top of the Premier League table and will struggle without a myriad of players heading for Angola and the £6m rated striker will be a very intelligent acquisition. http://www.caughtoffside.com/2009/12/21/Chelsea-to-make-intelligent-6m-veteran-striker-move-toni-set-for-premier-league-move/ please NO
