The FA were today studying video evidence to see whether Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic bit and headbutted Everton’s James McCarthy. Ivanovic was the victim of a vicious bite by Luis Suarez in 2013, for which the Liverpool striker received a 10-match ban having already been suspended for biting PSV’s Otman Bakkal while playing for Ajax. The Serb lost his cool in the final minutes of Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Everton last night, first holding McCarthy by the throat, then pushing his head into the Scot before appearing to bite him on the shoulder. The FA are waiting for referee Jonathan Moss’s report to confirm whether he saw the incident as no action was taken against the defender at the time. Should he be charged with violent conduct and found guilty, Ivanovic will be banned for three games, which would rule him out of the Capital One Cup Final against Tottenham on March 1.
