Exactly. Surely Liverpool could just match our bid, get it accepted by Basel and then let the player decide who he wants to join (which yesterday Mourinho said was Chelsea). Why would Liverpool offer more than us when clearly our bid was already right where Basel valued the player at?

Like @Pizy said, it's the philosophy of the club. Seriously speaking though, does it really matter if the price for this lad is £15m, £20m or even £25m? We're in a need of a quality left-back sooner or later and if Jose and the board think Shaw is good enough and feel he can contribute on a very high level for close to 15 years, it will always be looked back as a bargain once he goes in around 2029 or something like that, much like Rio Ferdinand at the cunts. For the FFP it hardly matters if the transfer fee is a few million higher or lower because the fee will be amortised for the length of the contract and an 18-year-old like Shaw wouldn't be getting all that much in terms of wages either. The annual book value for Shaw at £25m and £40k a week is pretty close to buying someone else for around £10m with wages of £80k a week, which is pretty much what even average players in their prime demand these days. Getting Shaw or the lad from Wolfsburg is a must. Rodriguez is probably at the moment better than Luke but it would be nice to see Shaw here instead of Manchester United so I don't know...

They paid only €13m for him back in 2012 so if it's true he's fallen out with Guardiola and they're looking to sell him, I can't see Bayern demanding more than around €15m. They also have a replacement lined up in Lewandowski and everyone knows that so it's not like they're in a very good position to negotiate.

Draxler and Reus play primarily on the left wing, not to mention both being three times more expensive than Salah. Reus has a release clause, sure, but it won't kick in till 2015 if I'm not mistaken and there's literally no chance of him leaving mid-season even if the release clause was in place now. A player like Draxler might be available but he would be demanding a much bigger role in the team than Salah so we'd be bound to have another unhappy attacking midfielder sooner or later and that would basically take us back to square one. Yarmolenko in my opinion is not a better player than Salah but to each their own. Got a feeling you're just against this transfer because the lad is against your country. Don't know if you're aware but many players (even some of our own) agree with Salah, most of them just don't declare their opinions so publicly...
