Nintendo wanted to use the powerhouse Sony (Sony was an aboslute powerhouse in the 90s) as a tool to develope better technology relating video games and CD ROMs. Eventually Sony became aware of the potential of the video game market and the potential of the Playstation. They kicked Nintendo out of the project before Nintendo could stab them in the back. Being so behind in the 'disc' market and Sony being so far ahead Nintendo's only way of competing with the Playstation was to revert to 'cartridge' based technology. If they had attempted to develope another disc based console, they would have lagged behind in terms of time and Sony may have created their own market before a Nintendo disc based console was released publicly. On another note, Nintendo have always been somewhat anal about pirating and homebrewing and they feared the potential of a disc based console would promote pirating, so that is why when they finally released a disc based console [the Gamecube] it had smaller 'customised discs'. Almost ironically the Nintendo DSi is one of the easiest things to pirate in the world with it's built in SD card slot.

I enjoy Sturridge's ablity too much for him to just join Sclerosis of the Liverpool. He has so much potential and he is very aggressive in the box which is fantastic. A ruthless striker is a good striker.
