If we had done this deal in 35m£, then most on here would have been very happy. Nonetheless, we have got a good player who is a definite upgrade over our last season's options.

I honestly doubt that messi alone would raise our revenue by 100-120m. If that was the case barca won't be behind united by 200m. Bayern won't be just 20m behind barca despite not having any massive marketable superstars. Ps - just checked. Our revenue for 2018/19 was record revenue of 423m£. And yet we incurred a 99.6m£ loss. So imho, it's beyond a pipe dream.

How do you think we can afford him? His wages alone are around 50m per year, which would be 10% of overall revenue for an year. Even if we are able to get him for 200m for let's say 4 years, that's 50m amortized fee. Another 10%. So 20% of our overall revenue on one player? This is on top of the 99m loss that we incurred for 2018-19. Anyone thinking we can "afford" him needs a reality check.

With the CB, GK signings that we have done, it seems obvious that we don't have funds anymore now. If we can somehow sell Barkley and jorginho (lots of links with roma), it can give us the push to get Rice which might change my expectations for the season.
