Could Chelsea come back in for Rayan Cherki amid Lyon struggles? https://thedailybriefing.io/i/138299261/could-Chelsea-come-back-in-for-rayan-cherki-amid-lyon-struggles Lyon’s miserable season continues and there are already clubs lining up to raid them for some of their best players this January. I think relegation is starting to look a very serious possibility for Lyon after just three points and zero victories from the club’s first nine games of the season, despite John Textor seeming to laugh the idea off at every opportunity. If you look at Lyon’s record, though, it’s no laughing matter - they’re doing worse at this moment in time than a lot of other previously relegated clubs have done by this stage of the season. Lyon may feel they’re too good to go down, but you just have to look at some of the clubs in Ligue 2 right now like Bordeaux and Saint-Etienne - no club is too big to go down in France, and I think Lyon are absolutely in a relegation battle. EXCL: Chelsea striker targets, realistic Arsenal midfield signing, the mood inside Man Utd, and more BEN JACOBS · 31 OCT Read full story Fabio Grosso has just come in as manager and I think it’s a questionable appointment, while we also know that several players wanted out in the summer. It’s not a happy place to be at the moment. Rayan Cherki is one name whose future could be in doubt, and there’ll be plenty of European clubs monitoring him and other players because as well as sporting issues on the pitch at the moment there are also real financial difficulties for Lyon. A lot of players already wanted to jump ship before the start of the season, and they still could. Cherki will certainly be one to keep an eye on, though I don’t know for sure if Chelsea plan to come back in for him - the Blues had an interest in him in the past, but one problem with him is that clubs are becoming increasingly aware that he has massive attitude problems. Cherki doesn’t always conduct himself like he should on the pitch or in training, and there is quite a problematic relationship between the player’s entourage and the club, so that could get in the way of him developing to the best of his ability. He’s considered one of the most talented players to ever come through Lyon’s academy, so there’s no doubt he could become a top, top player one day, but you just have to look at reports of how things have gone in the first few weeks under Grosso - it points to him being a difficult character and I think that’s made a few European clubs think twice about trying to make a move for him. Still, while Lyon remain hamstrung financially, there are sure to be clubs who try to pounce on that opportunity. Whether or not Chelsea are one of those who decide to go back in for him, it depends how much due diligence they’ve done on the player. They’ll have to decide if it’s worth the risk, because some clubs have looked closely at Cherki before deciding to think twice. These issues have been there for a while, not just with Grosso - there’s definitely room for him to improve the way he responds to what coaches are asking of him, and to deal better with constructive criticism. He has immense potential, but at the moment it looks like unless he changes, it’s going to be difficult for him to really tap into that potential and have the career he’s truly capable of.

Chelsea https://thedailybriefing.io/i/138491753/Chelsea Mauricio Pochettino has defended Nicolas Jackson after fan criticism: “For different reasons, Jackson is now suffering. Nico needs support. I believe in him, really. Only problem is time. I don’t want to give examples, but he arrived at Chelsea in a situation that is not easy for him. We cannot be unfair in the analysis.” Pochettino: “The important thing is to trust the ideas, the judgment and analysis of why certain things have not happened. To help the organisation to be better and to improve, and not to make the same mistakes again.” Rayan Cherki has been linked with Chelsea but could there be issues putting off the Blues and other top clubs? Possible ins and outs at Chelsea this January https://thedailybriefing.io/i/138449579/possible-ins-and-outs-at-Chelsea-this-january Chelsea do want another striker in 2024 but no final decision has been made yet as to whether to move in January or wait until summer. There is faith in Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja and a feeling within the club that Christopher Nkunku’s return from a knee injury could make all the difference. It will be near impossible for Chelsea to sign Victor Osimhen mid-season. Although the Nigerian forward hasn’t extended his Napoli contract, Aurelio De Laurentiis just doesn't want to sell in January. There’s no doubt Osimhen will leave for over €100m if he doesn't extend, but Napoli are prepared to wait until summer unless they receive an astronomical offer. Ivan Toney is a more ‘gettable’ target in January. Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs have all held internal discussions about him. Brentford want at least £65m, but several sources feel that number could be closer to £80m. It will all depend if there's a bidding war. Brentford would welcome Chelsea interest and Toney is keen to move sooner rather than later. Toney has no fixed preference yet, but it is true he has admiration for Arsenal’s project and a desire to play Champions League football. Chelsea still need to focus on outgoings in January. Trevoh Chalobah is expected to be sold. It’s not true he is solely looking to stay in the Premier League. The priority is actually just regular minutes and ideally European football. Chalobah rejected Nottingham Forest last summer because he felt he could get the latter somewhere else. He really wanted a move to Bayern, who tried for a loan on deadline day over the summer but ran out of time. Dortmund are also one to watch when the January window opens. Ian Maatsen could also be sold in 2024 if he doesn’t sign a long-term deal at Chelsea. The same can be said for Conor Gallagher, even though he’s been captaining the side in the absence of Reece James and Ben Chilwell. Gallagher wants to stay and fight for his place at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea would still seriously consider offers around £45-50m. Spurs, last summer, felt that asking price was too high.

Victor Osimhen and Nico Gonzalez to Chelsea? https://thedailybriefing.io/i/138441364/victor-osimhen-and-nico-gonzalez-to-Chelsea We know Chelsea could prioritise a new striker this January, and Victor Osimhen is one of the names linked, but I think it’s likely to be very difficult to get him out of Napoli in January. I wouldn’t say it’s impossible because nothing is impossible in football, but it’s really close to impossible. For Napoli, Osimhen is a really important player, and the club are not scared to wait until the summer to sell him, even if he hasn’t signed a new contract yet. They did the same with Kalidou Koulibaly in the past, even though there were always rumours about him, so Napoli always do their best to keep their players. It’s not been an easy season for them, but they’re hoping to do important things in Serie A and Europe, so I think they will try to keep Osimhen. Maybe a crazy bid could change things, I think they will make it really difficult for clubs to sign Osimhen. At the moment they are not even mentioning a price, so I think it will be more than difficult for any potential suitors. Another Chelsea rumour is that Nico Gonzalez is now on their radar, but honestly I’m not aware of any contact with Chelsea at this stage. It’s a very quiet situation since Fiorentina rejected £40m from Brentford last summer. He’s a very good player in my opinion, but he probably needs one more year in Fiorentina before thinking about a big move to somewhere like Chelsea.

It is truly madness we spent that much and didn't not buy a proven WC CF and a proven WC winger.

Disasi was a poor buy. I never wanted him and there were many better right-footed CB options out there then and now.
