yes people normally choose subjects connected to the degree course they want ,, at one time it was mainly Science or Arts but many more options

now ,,,A lot of UK people on here are on degree courses

Awesome, I find this much more useful. In Brazil, you need to take a test that has all subjects and each university apply their own test.

I took 2:

Unicamp: Phase1- 48 tests of everything and 3 essays; Phase 2- All open/written questions (12 Portuguese, 12 Math, 18 History+Geography, 24 Biology+Physics+Chemestry).

USP: Phase1- 90 tests (all subjects); Phase2- 10 open questions of Portuguese, 10 of Math and 20 of Everything Else and 1 Essay).

I think it is stupid. Why do I need to know biology for an engeneering school?

I believe an unified test for everyone and only their desirable subjects is much, much better.

it is a difficult thing to balance Specialisation with a broader range of subjects . I was (am ) a Scientist and Mathematician but I love History

and Literature which I stopped studying at 16

Yes, I totally understand you. I mean, I am only 1 year away from school and already feel the loss of beeing without any contact with subjects like History, Biology, etc.

Specialisation brought us immense technological advance, but it has its flaws. There will never be another Leonardo Da Vinci, bright minds will only stand out on their fields...

until the 20th Century most of the greatest minds studied more than onesubject ...Now that is impossible...

Even in sport we had people who were international standard in 3 or more sports
