Chelsea look to Vieira as Essien replacement

Chelsea want Patrick Vieira - if an appeal against their transfer ban is a success.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti sees Vieira as a perfect replacement for Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel when the pair go to the African Nations in January.

Vieira, 33, has not played for Inter Milan this term and watched Chelsea beat Liverpool on Sunday.

The Blues cannot sign players for the next two transfer windows after the Gael Kakuta saga. And they face competition from Vieira's old club Arsenal.

Cj their is no point in getting a 25 year old dm just for him to play 4 matches and be dumped when obi and bison get back. I would welcome this signing to be honest he is the best we can get for that position and age !

Chelsea star Didier Drogba believes Inter Milan midfielder Patrick Vieira would be a great addition to the squad. Reports this morning claimed Carlo Ancelotti had earmarked the Frenchman as a player capable of plugging the gap created by Michael Essien and Jon Obi Mikel’s departure to the African Nations Cup in January. The 33-year-old has also been linked with a return to the Premier League with his old club Arsenal amid additional, reputed interest from Tottenham.

Drogba told RTL: “Patrick Viera will be a good addition to our squad, if we can recruit,”

“We know that we will lose two midfielders in January. John Obi Mikel and Michael Essien will be in Angola for African Cup of Nations.”

“Vieira? We'd take him anytime.”

“We played against him in pre-season in America. He was ready, in good form and match fit."

Patrick is 33 years of age right? We need at least some younger player. Dont get me wrong Vieira probley is a good player but all that is going to happen is he will replace essien and mikel on the pitch but once they both come back he will be placed on the bench for a long period of time and then he will regret joining us and wished he joined back at arsenal and I dont fancy waking up in the morning, reading the paper about Vieira complaing and whineing.

Chelsea are lining up a shock move for Inter Milan star Patrick Vieira in January.

Former Arsenal star Vieira, 33, has fallen out of favour at Inter and rarely starts under coach Jose Mourinho.

He has said he will stay in Italy until his contract expires in June, but has growing concerns that his place in the France World Cup team is at risk unless he plays regularly.

The veteran performer was left out of the squad for the controversial play-offs with Republic of Ireland and wants his place.

Chelsea would offer the tough-tackling midfield star an 18-month deal worth around £50,000 a week to beat off interest from Arsenal and Tottenham.

Vieira is seen as ideal cover for Michael Essien and John Mikel Obi, who will be among the Chelsea contingent at the African Cup of Nations in January.

Chelsea will also be missing Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou for the month, which will be crucial in their hopes of taking the title from Manchester United.

The quartet could miss up to six matches including league and although the fixture list has been kind with league games against Hull, Sunderland, Birmingham and Burnley, Ancelotti is taking no chances.
