Walsh is the third youngest starter - in a competitive match - in the club's history, behind Ian Hamilton and Kingsley Whiffen.

It is with sadness that Chelsea Football Club learns of the passing of our former player, Ian Hamilton, at the age of 73.

Nicknamed Chico after Chico Hamilton, a popular jazz musician of the era, he played five games for Chelsea in the 1966/67 season and although his career at the club was short, he set two club records that have remained in place to this day.

While still a junior player, he was handed his senior debut in a league game against Tottenham at White Hart Lane in March 1967, and headed the Chelsea goal in a 1-1 draw. Aged 16 years and 138 days, he became both our youngest men’s team player and our youngest goalscorer.

Kingsley Whiffen

Stuart Kingsley Gears Whiffen (3 December 1950 – 15 December 2006) was a Welsh amateur footballer who made one appearance in the Football League for Chelsea as a goalkeeper. He was aged 16 years and 157 days on his only Chelsea appearance, making him the club's second youngest player of all time after his teammate Ian Hamilton, who was 16 years and 138 days on his debut earlier that year. Whiffen won caps for Wales at schoolboy level.

Whiffen's only Chelsea game was a 3-2 defeat at Leicester City on 9 May 1967. He replaced Peter Bonetti in the starting lineup, as Chelsea rested a number of players ahead of the FA Cup Final on 20 May.
