John Obi Mikel will walk into 2009 with a wider smile on his face than usual after being offered a sensational new deal by Chelsea.

People Sport understands the talented Nigeria midfielder will trouser £80,000 a week, rising to £120,000 a week over the five-year term of the contract.

The increase will eventually put him on a par with the club's highest earners - skipper John Terry, vice-captain Frank Lampard and Michael Ballack.

Mikel has become a major force for the Blues, particularly in the absence of injured Michael Essien.

And the 21-year-old's efforts have been rewarded with Chelsea attempting to tie him down on a longterm deal.

Great news! :D

good thing that he was offered a new contract but i have learn't not to trust the wage figures from the press...

True, still the official site would hardly/never announce the players' wages, would they?

Chelsea made a rod for their own back by giving the senior players ridiculous amounts of money in the first place and now anyone they want to keep will have to be offered similar amounts because you can bet your arse if Chelsea didnt offer Mikel a big enough contract then another club certainly would.

Good move on Chelsea's part making sure they hang on to a player like Mikel.

He fully deserves some sort of recognition for his performances this season. He's made the loss of Essien for much of the season a softer blow to take. He has taken on the role with both hands and is rapidly improving.

Dont get me wrong, I'd have Essien back in a heartbeat, and when he does come back I'd drop Deco/Ballack on current form tbh.
