London’s Best Sunday Roasts

The Sunday Roast.

A meal so integral to our identity as Brits that the French literally refer to us as ‘les rosbifs’.

Something that – with the whole ‘frogs’ thing – we probably started.

Fortunately though we’ve come to wear our crown with pride, turning what began as a humble piece of meat and veg to feed the whole family into a food-driven cultural beacon representing the entirety of Britain.

It is London that reigns supreme though, and we’ve outlined exactly where you can find out why.

Behold, London’s best Sunday roasts:

https://thenudge.com/features/londons-best-sunday-roasts/

CENTRAL

Blacklock | Soho & Shoreditch

Blacklock City roast

A Soho chop house opened by a trio of ex-Hawksmoor folk. Choose your meat – beef, lamb or pork – or don’t, and get the ‘All In’ which has everything, with all the trimmings, and is perfect for sharing. Their gravy is the best in London; we said it. And it’s all even better paired with one of their bloody maries or breakfast martinis. READ MORE

Details: 24 Great Windmill St, W1D 7LG | Sundays 12-6pm (9pm Shoreditch) | £16-£20 | Make a booking here

The George | Strand

The George, The Strand - Roast Dinners In London

A slip of a pub on the Strand that looks like it’s been ripped straight out of Tudor England, with mullioned windows, cosy nooks and a carving on the outside of a naked man chasing pigs. Unconventional farming methods notwithstanding, that pork (and beef, and chicken) is whipped into an excellent Sunday roast with crispy roast potatoes, springy greens and possibly the best cauliflower cheese in London.

Details: 213 Strand, WC2R 1AP | 12-9pm | £16 | Make a booking here

The Quality Chop House | Farringdon

Sunday Roast at Quality Chop House! - Picture of The Quality Chop House, London - Tripadvisor

The Quality Chop House is a dining room, wine bar, butchery and butchers shop that has opened for lunch and dinner since 1869. Or, you could just call it an institution. READ MORE

Cora Pearl | Covent Garden

CoraPearl_FoodShoot2_004.jpg

It’s a super intimate, richly-designed space in Covent Garden, serving a small-in-size, big-in-flavour Sunday lunch menu, including the likes of roast beef with horseradish sauce, brought to you alongside bowls of seasonal veg, crispy rectangles of layered confit potatoes, cauliflower cheese, and of course a Yorkshire pud. They also do a second sweet Y-Pud for dessert, filled with sticky, cinnamony apples and a big dollop of vanilla ice cream. READ MORE.

Details: 30 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, Central London, WC2E 8NA | Sundays 12-3.30pm | £25-£26 | Make a booking here.

EAST

Jones & Sons | Dalston

jones-sons-dalston-roast.jpg

Just perfection. Starters of grilled peaches and Devon crab on sourdough give way to Welsh leg of lamb, slow roast pork belly and Herefordshire rib eye (and an actual choice of dishes for non meat-eaters), with all the trimmings in tow. READ MORE

The Marksman | Hackney

Hill & Szrok | Hackney

hillszrok.jpg

Butcher by day; communal, intimate steak eatery by night. Just like a restauranteering Batman. Chef Alex Szrok, previously of The Eagle in Farringdon, wipes down the chop table at 6pm, places 12 seats around it and – if you’re lucky enough to nab one – cooks whatever he feels like. READ MORE

The Jugged Hare | Barbican

the-jugged-hare.jpg

For the adventurous. Sundays at The Jugged Hare see the likes of half or whole-roasted chicken with sage stuffing and bread sauce; 45 day-aged rump with horseradish; leg of mutton; roast whole grouse (with liver pâté en croûte and game chips); or – for the brave – the eponymous dish of jugged hare. It’s an old 18th century recipe that came from the original nose-to-tail philosophy; hare (here ethically sourced from Yorkshire) stewed casserole-style with red wine and a sauce made with the hare’s blood.

Christmas at The Camberwell Arms

Dining at the Camberwell Arms is a test of willpower. Because you’re going to have to either starve yourself for a fortnight beforehand, or somehow hold back on the starter of pork fat and scotch bonnet on toast; the side of legendary crispy brussels sprouts with pickled red onion; or the roast itself – whether it’s the porchetta to share; the Hereford beef with ale and marrow pie; or the spit-roasted herb-fed chicken – if you want to have room for this bad boy. READ MORE

CONVERSE X FENG CHEN WANG – CHUCK 70 2 IN 1 HIGH QUARTZ PINK

https://www.highsnobiety.com/shop/product/converse-x-feng-chen-wang-chuck-70-2-in-1-high-quartz-pink/

Feng Chen Wang is back with a new interpretation of her outlandish two-in-one Converse Chuck 70. Known for her deconstructed style that continues to challenge convention, the designer’s work largely draws from personal experience to deliver conceptual projects that disrupt the status quo. Wang’s notorious two-in-one Chuck now emerges in a distinctive leather execution that mirrors cracked concrete, with the vivid graphic on the leather creating the illusion of the sneaker being sealed in concrete. Layering is the name of the game for Converse x Feng Chen Wang, as we find the iconic Chuck 70 blending two halves to make a whole. Double foxing and a stacked outsole split into four pieces further carry out the segmented theme. If you thought Wang’s two-in-one Chuck 70 couldn't get any bolder, think again.

“Medium Olive” Takes Over The Latest Nike Dunk Low Next Nature

https://sneakernews.com/2021/09/17/nike-dunk-low-sequoia-medium-olive-dd3358-300/

feature image

Nike Dunk Low Next Nature "Medium Olive"

Release Date: 2021

Color: Sequoia/Orange/Medium Olive/Sail

Mens: $110
Style Code: DD3358-300
Grade School: N/A
Style Code: DC9561-300

Over the past two years, NIKE, Inc. has made a concerted effort to improve on its eco-friendliness. Under the “Move To Zero” initiative, the North American conglomerate has reduced waste and carbon emissions across all of its segments, including product manufacturing. One of the achievements of this commitment has been more sustainable footwear, like the newly-surfaced Nike Dunk Low Next Nature replete in “Medium Olive.”

Created from at least 50% recycled material, the upcoming pair boasts a number of details specifically geared for the colder months of the year. Reinforced nylon sets the stage for the suede and leather overlaid across the forefoot, mid-foot and heel. Profile swooshes and upper heel panels indulge in a vibrant “Orange” color that contrasts the predominantly-“Medium Olive” arrangement across the sneaker. The Nike Dunk also includes a furry inner lining and insole, with the latter nodding to how any wearer’s feet will feel: “TOASTY.” Underfoot, the take on Peter Moore’s iconic design is rounded out with a white midsole and light gum brown outsole.

Enjoy official images of the pair here below as you await an official Nike SNKRS launch date.

For more swoosh-branded sneakers, check out the Louis Vuitton Air Force 1 collection expected to drop during Spring/Summer 2022.

The New Balance XC-72 Goes Lunar With The “Moonbeam” Pack 🌓

https://sneakernews.com/2021/11/05/new-balance-xc72-uxc72da1-uxc72db1-black-moonbeam/

New Balance XC72

Release Date: 2021

Color: Moonbeam/Black

Mens: $100
Style Code: UXC72DB1

Thanks to Casablanca, the New Balance XC-72 debuted to a wide array of bright colors. Their latest take on the silhouette, though, was a surprising display of subtlety, lacking the liveliness the pairs before it had in spades. This, however bad it may seem, proves to be a breath of fresh air; and soon, the GR equivalents will be following suit.

Among the first to arrive is the “Moonbeam” pack, a duo of colorways that explores both extremes of the same monochromatic spectrum. Atop one pair in particular, black assumes the helm, dressing up both the lateral and medial sides in blacked out suede, leather, and mesh. But straight down the middle, two different but still related off-white hits dress up every fixture, splitting the upper and tooling down the middle with very little breaks. This holds true with the accompanying pair, its execution similar in all ways save for the inversed arrangement.

Enjoy a close-up, official look at both options here and sit tight as we await their arrival on NewBalance.com and select retailers.

In other news, the Off-White Air Jordan 1 Chicago is landing later this month.

The Barbary Next Door

What is The Barbary Next Door? It’s a restaurant from the team behind The Barbary. And where is it? It’s next door to The Barbary.

Frankly, the name is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here.

So, in the hopes of giving it a break, here’s the long & short of it all: The Barbary is the wonderful North African restaurant nestled in the colourful courtyard at Neal’s Yard. It’s from the eminently talented people behind The Palomar, and it’s become so popular that they’ve decided to let it spill over into the adjacent building, converting the cosy little space that used to house their coffee shop side-hustle (Jacob The Angel) into a kind of mini Barbary.

And now it’s open.

They must be beside themselves.

barbary-next-door-interior.jpeg.webp

Like its big sister, The Barbary Next Door is all counter seating. Here, it faces the open kitchen, and snakes around to hug the blushed pink wall behind. It’s understandably extremely intimate, with only space for just over a dozen or so diners all-told, plus the chefs diligently beavering away behind that counter who – in true counter-dining style – you’ll inevitably end up engaging in conversation.

2021_10_SBell_2021_10_BluePosts_BarberyNextDoor_4222-1.jpeg.webp

And as for what they’re making? Well, after tossing back a harissa-kissed oyster, or a cumin-salted quail egg, you can tear into the excellent flatbreads that The Barbary has become famous for, along with their delightful accompanying dips (machluta, tirshi, zaalouk, etc.). Then, the larger dishes will net you anything from crispy chicken pastilla filo pie with chilli cherry jam, to a hearty oxtail tagine, a fragrant stuffed seabass chermoula, or a rich butter bean & smoked paprika stew.

barbary-next-door-food.jpeg.webp

The drinks part of this whole operation is where things diverge a little from the mothership, by leaning much more steeply into their wine offering. They’ve hired sommelier-extraordinaire Honey Spencer (she’s worked with Sager + Wilde, Flor, The Mulwray, etc.) who’s curated a list of Old World organics, plus a couple of Moroccan numbers to act as menu-matchers, and standalone wine-bar fodder. There’s pre-dinner wine, post-dinner wine, orange wine, you name it. And if you’re feeling frisky, you can score a prosecco-loaded Cocchi sbagliato, too.

As for Jacob The Angel? It’ll be migrating to an as-yet-unnamed location.

Despite the name, it’s not going to heaven quite yet.

NOTE: The Barbary Next Door is open now. You can find out more, and make a booking at their website right HERE.

Super-Agent Rich Paul Gets His Own New Balance 550 Colab

https://www.sneakerfreaker.com/news/rich-paul-new-balance-550-release-info

If you never thought you'd see a sports agent getting his own shoe, you must not be familiar with Rich Paul. Arguably the most powerful superstar whisperer in all of sports (sorry, Scott Boras), Paul wields a tremendous amount of influence in the NBA and boasts clients like LeBron James, Chris Paul and John Wall. There was even a since-revoked NCAA rule named after him, thanks to his relationship with Darius Bazley. He's also dating Adele – which doesn't have anything to do with basketball but feels worth mentioning.

Now that you know all that, is it really surprising that he got a shoe colab with New Balance, the brand that he helped Bazley score a million-dollar internship with before turning pro? Paul has teamed up with New Balance for the Rich Paul x New Balance 550, a crisp take on the classic hoops shoe that puts his name alongside other famed brand partners like Aimé Leon Dore and AURALEE. Packaged in a specially branded box, Paul's 550 is dressed in off-white with accents of sky blue, navy blue and pastel yellow. It features perforated leather detailing, co-branded tongue badges with a repeating basketball graphic and co-branded insoles to boot. A trio of lace options completes the offering.

Currently, there's no release info available for the Rich Paul x New Balance 550. There's also a possibility it'll be a friends and family release! Either way it goes, we'll be sure to keep you updated as more info surfaces.

CASIO G-SHOCK – GA-2100-5AER BEIGE

https://www.highsnobiety.com/shop/product/casio-g-shock-ga-2100-5aer-beige/

G-SHOCK was born out of a need for a timepiece that wouldn’t break even when dropped. After engaging in a rigorous trial and error process, the brand’s development team ultimately came up with an innovative design concept that saw the heart of a watch being surrounded by a hollow structure that is the case. Decades later, G-SHOCK watches are still widely recognized for their shock resistance, having been — and still being — worn by everyone from actors and musicians to athletes, Navy SEALs, and medical professionals. The GA-2100 inherited the octagon form from the original DW-5000C. Its case and bracelet are crafted from a high-strength resin material that is reinforced with carbon fiber, yet the case remains the thinnest among G-SHOCK combination models, measuring a mere 11.8 mm (.5 in) thick. Also known for its technical specifications, G-SHOCK has outfitted the GA-2100 with a background illuminator and neo-display for visibility in low-light situations, timer and stop function for athletes, multifunctional alarm, world time function with up to 29 different time zones, and automatic calendar, among other features.

Kensington Park Road
London W11

£3,450,000
Leasehold

https://www.themodernhouse.com/sales-list/kensington-park-road/

KPR-1-950x634.jpg

“The light-filled reception room opens fully to a large decked terrace through glazed bi-fold doors”

This immaculate maisonette is brilliantly positioned on the corner of Kensington Park Road and Westbourne Grove in Notting Hill. It unfolds over approximately 2,150 sq ft and is arranged across five floors, which encompass three bedrooms and two receptions. The maisonette arguably has the feeling of a townhouse and enjoys excellent views from a large south-facing roof terrace over the foliage of neighbouring gardens and the park opposite.

The Tour

From Kensington Park Road, a private entrance opens to a long hallway. An oak staircase links the levels, leading first to a guest WC a short level up. On the first floor is an open-plan kitchen, dining and living room, illuminated by a duo of sash windows that look south to the greenery opposite. Oak flooring extends throughout and there is a gas fire to one side. The kitchen has Corian worktops and appliances by Neff.

The upper levels are home to two bedrooms and a study. Both the main bedroom and the guest room have en suite bath or shower rooms finished in limestone and Iroko, with underfloor heating. The main bedroom has a combination of fitted cupboards in walnut and others by Italian brand Porro which are present in all bedrooms. Within the guest bedroom, an alcove is filled with shelving, also in walnut.

A further reception room occupies the top floor; this could also be used as a third bedroom. The light-filled room opens fully to a large decked terrace through glazed bi-fold doors with an oak frame and has a subtle kitchenette along one wall.

The lower ground level is currently arranged as a brilliant cinema room. Oak flooring with underfloor heating runs underfoot, and there is acoustic dampening for audio effect. A doorway to one side leads to a non-demised courtyard, while beyond the main room lies a utility, WC, wine store and two large storage cupboards.

Outdoor Space

The wonderful decked roof terrace offers an excellent extension of the fourth-floor living room. A large decked area with slatted fencing and matching built-in seating, its orientation is perfect for all-day sun and its outlook over gardens and a park means it is incredibly private.

The Area

Westbourne Grove is one of west London’s most desirable destinations, celebrated for its restaurants, cafes and boutiques. On the doorstep are Franklin’s Wine, Sally Clarke Bakery , Provenance Butcher and The Notting Hill Fish and Meat Shop. The immediate area has many excellent restaurants such as the two Michelin-starred Ledbury, three Michelin-starred Core by Clare Smyth and Ottolenghi.  Further bars, restaurants and pubs can be found throughout Notting Hill, as can The Electric Cinema and the popular Notting Hill Arts Club. The green open spaces of Kensington Gardens are a short walk away.

Notting Hill Gate (Central Line) and Ladbroke Grove (Circle and Hammersmith and City Lines) are close by. The Westway provides an easy route out of the city by road, for swift access to Heathrow Airport and the south-west.

MATTEL CREATIONS LAUNCHES THE ‘COLLABORATORY’ WITH ALEALI MAY, EVAN MOCK & MORE

https://www.highsnobiety.com/p/mattel-creations-collaboratory-2021/

Mattel Creations Launches the 'Collaboratory' With Aleali May, Evan Mock & More

Mattel has always believed toys are canvases for creativity and that they should be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of age.

That philosophy is the guiding principle behind Mattel Creations, the brand’s collaborations platform responsible for some of the most innovative releases in recent memory. We explore why they love working with fresh talent in the next episode of Creator Stories, a series documenting our favorite Mattel Creations moments.

After inviting the likes of groundbreaking artists MADSAKI and Shepard Fairey to design exclusive projects of their own, the playmaker is launching the ‘Collaboratory’ — a project that allows collaborators from all walks of life to meaningfully express their ideas through Mattel canvases. “Mattel Creations is all about allowing collaborators and partners to work with our IP to create something unique and beautiful,” says Ethan Wood, Mattel Creations’ design director. “It’s about toys as art and art as toys.”

The Collaboratory paired four creators hailing from diverse personal and professional backgrounds — Aleali May, Evan Mock, Kristopher Kites, and Blue the Great — with four iconic Mattel brands, resulting in a toy capsule destined to be collector’s items. They also got a chance to create one-of-a-kind pieces that’ll be displayed alongside other fine works at our HIGHart pop-up in Miami. We got an inside look at the design process between all four collaborators and what each property means to them.

Kristopher Kites

For Kites, an avant-garde designer best known for his oversized custom jewelry, it was a chance to revisit a childhood favorite and fashion one of his signature chains from it. “Masters of the Universe is one of the forefathers of my dad’s childhood and mine too!” he says. “I’ve always loved toys and cartoons from all generations, and He-Man so arrogantly saying ‘I HAVE THE POWERRRRR’ was crazy.”

1638276065-kris1.jpeg?auto=format1638276071-kris2.jpeg?auto=format

While He-Man is likely the crowd favorite for many, Kites picked a far less recognizable character to work on. “Orko is underrated and I felt there was so much exploration to be done with him,” Kites says. He also used it as an opportunity to push Mattel Creations into branching out with other characters instead of sticking to tried-and-true heroes and villains. Kites’ limited-edition Orko pendant features an iridescent chain that can be worn as a necklace or hung on a special light-up display base to bring the character to life.

Aleali May

Model, stylist and fashion designer Aleali May is no stranger to flexing her design chops with multiple Air Jordan collabs under her belt. But it’s her unique sense of style that caught the eye of Mattel Creations, and she used her impeccable styling know-how to create her first fashion collection for Barbie. It’s a full-circle moment for May, who started styling with her first childhood Barbie doll. “I wanted to create a mini version of myself as a Barbie, and create all the staple pieces I usually wear during Fashion Week,” she says. For May’s one-of-a-kind Barbie made in her likeness, she wanted to recreate one of her favorite looks from Paris Fashion Week. “They executed so flawlessly. Down to my A-chain, bag collaboration with jewelry designer Martine Ali, and even my first Jordan collab.”

Evan Mock

Surfer and actor Evan Mock translated his hometown’s North Shore vibes into a Hot Wheels 1987 Toyota Pickup North Shore Edition — the same one he grew up driving in Oahu, Hawaii. “It was the first truck I ever owned and I really wanted to recreate it,” he tells us. “When I look at it now, I’m reminded of home and Hawaii. It was also the truck I sold to move to California to pursue my dreams, so it means a lot to me.”

Blue the Great

If you asked muralist, photographer Blue the Great why he chose to work on Thomas the Tank Engine, you’d probably think it was the connection to the character’s vibrant hue — but you’d be wrong. The Kendrick Lamar collaborator grew up watching the animated classic and fondly recalls playing with the toy train sets as a child. “Thomas was always leading the pack and we had everything from the mini toy to the large-scale Thomas toys back in the day,” he says.

Graffiti is one of Blue’s artistic disciplines and he was stoked to have a shot at reimagining this iconic character and making it his own. “When graffiti artists go tagging, trains are always one of the best canvases because it puts your art on the move, so I imagined ‘What if I got to tag Thomas the Train in the wild?”
