Great news. Only 2 clubs in the top 2 divisions opposed safe standing trials - one of them being Liverpool. Can't blame them since they're doing it out of respect but when there is a clear majority, it's surely worth considering.

Now United are supporting it after Bristol City installed a trial run of safe-standing seats, and the whole thing seems to be gathering a bit of momentum. Having seen a demonstration of how they actually function and the fact that they do allow more people to be accommodated (of course for us egress issues might still exist) then I can't see how anyone could be against this.

I can't see how these wouldn't be safer than the current system where people stand and have no barrier in front of them to hold on to. Anyone who has been to a few games will have seen people stumble over a row of chairs at least once and it would put an end to the losing battle stewards have trying to get people to sit, when sitting is not what someone should be doing at a football match.

So fair play to Mr Woodward.

There's a survey doing the rounds asking Chelsea supporters for their views. It takes a couple of minutes but might make some difference, who knows?

On another note, one barrier that is cropping up on the horizon is the Hillsborough Family Support Group and in particular a woman called Margaret Aspinall who is urging the Premier League clubs not to listen to the majority of supporters who seem to support safe standing.

Liverpool and anything connected to Hillsborough won't support it but with 40+ teams in the top 2 divisions supporting it, i think there is cause for optimism

Awful what happened at hillsboro and Heysel. Fact is it would never return to the free for all, that was the 70s and 80s that saw cops allowing far too many people into an enclosure, health and safety legislation has been updated numerous times. I think there is a bit of the 'notice me' about her writing to clubs rather than a genuine concern or grasping of the present situation.

Just look at other sports. Noticeably Rugby League. The majority of grounds have large areas which are standing, and not what you would call "safe standing" either. A lot of supporters don't even have a barrier to lean on, and look at how many incidents have happened there, absolutely none.

On a slight tangent, safe standing areas would actually make it safer in areas where people habitually stand already.

According to some on the Liverpool forums, there's simply no reasoning with her despite Liverpool supporters being no different from other fans in their views on this issue.
