@Rmpr, have you ever been to gang infested favelas? I've watched the Ross Kemp on Gangs documentaries about gang violence all over the world and Brazil was also represented. It looked bad in the favelas, really bad.

We dont have what you would consider gangs, but favela is a very unique place. It is anything but easy to explain...

It is only bad for the people who live in it or work there (police, teachers, bus drivers, etc). I have been to a few favelas, but it is either to buy drugs for my friends or to do volunteer works. In both cases, they treat you really well!

I doubt you trully want to learn about it, but if you do just start a PM or create a thread. Be prepared for a long conversation though.

@Toronto… no the shoot first attitude is not an American one and in most states will end land you in jail just as fast if not faster than the guy breaking into your house...

@rmpr… I understand your frustration about people making assumptions about where you are from and where you live. I get both sides of that coin. I love watching peoples expression in the states when I say I live in China and even better when I tell them I like living here! :)

Tourist are awful. I think American tourists (especially the ones traveling with a cruise line or tour group) are the worst next to Chinese… (if you haven't run into a Chinese tour group my only advice if you see one is run the other way!) We've traveled to some remote places in Asia and I do my best not to stare and am very careful not be too showy with my camera, my cash, or belongings. I never ever use my iPad for pictures. The last thing I want is a target on my back! I also do my research to learn about the traditions and culture, so that I don't offend anyone. I wouldn't want to offend someone by the way I dress or by inadvertently using a hand gesture that means something else.

RE Oscar: Last article I read said he shot through the bathroom door 4 times and then carried her downstairs before starting CPR.

  1. why would a burglar be in your bathroom?
  2. didn't he know she was home?
  3. if he did, wouldn't knocking come before shooting?
  4. why did he move her?

Doesn't matter if it was intentional or not, she is dead. Nothing will change that.

It does matter. A just punishment is extremely important for the victim's family, and it matters greatly whether she was killed intentionally or by accident. And if intentionally, then why? The victim's closest ones simply need to know for closure.

The guy who killed my best friend answered most important questions with "I don't know, I don't remember, I don't I don't bla bla" in court... fucking wanker, just admit what and why you did. No real motive was established in the end, he was simply thrown into the bin leaving his family wondering wtf went down. Piece of shit.

My deepest sympathies for you and your friends family. You are absolutely right, knowing even if it is an ugly truth is better than not knowing why. It helps the grieving process. I won't say the healing process, because I am not sure that is what we do when we grieve. There is healing but I don't think the pain of losing someone close to you ever completely goes away.

And in the end nothing changed. Your friend is still dead and your still angry about it. Why would motives, confessions, etc make you feel better? Even if you knew you'd have other reasons to be angry about it.

Sorry for sounding blunt or insensitive (I'm not trying to make you feel bad or anything, I don't want to do that) but I know I'd be upset no matter the consequences. 25 years...50 years...what's the difference? It won't make the pain go away, just induce a sense of gratification for revenge.

It doesn't make a difference on any grand scheme. In fact if we went further with this idea there is no point in life on Earth either, the universe will keep doing whatever it is doing and there is nothing we can say or do that will make a difference in that process. It's a fact that you can't bring somebody back from dead, but knowing why you can't bring somebody back, helps bring some relief and closure. It won't take away anger and misery, but it will make a difference. Why do people want to find the bodies of their loved ones who are missing but are confirmed dead, even though it won't make a damndest difference? To have proper burial for closure and to respect the memory.

Knowledge is the only real power people have, obtaining it, maintaining it, dwelling on it is what conscious life is all about - the power to gain and process thoughts, emotions and knowledge. If you are content with doing and learning nothing because "it won't make a difference", then you aren't doing what is human. This is what enables human beings determine their own fates, instead of being passive bystanders to processes of nature like lifeless objects whose fates were determined the moment they came to be.

Maybe you're right...maybe you're not. The only only thing I know is that I know nothing.

Maybe I'm neither, not right or wrong? Maybe you know nothing and everything at the same time? What is nothing and everything? Who were behind 9/11 attacks? Is the real Paul McCartney dead? Where is Waldo?

Just watching news and latest word is that the murder was intentional. He got out of bed, put on his prosthesis, walked 7 metres and shot her through the bathroom door 4 times. He claimed to have thought that his girlfriend was in bed next to him, which isn't very believable.

I am suspicious and think Pistorius is regretting the consequences of his actions now but that is only my opinion however whatever the charge is, pre-meditated or not or whatever the judge concludes, the only person who knows whether it was intentional or not is Pistorius himself.

this case just keeps getting weirder and weirder… the lead detective has been charged with homicide… crazy!!

I know, its quickly becoming a bit farcical, which is not the idea when they are trying to get justice for the death of an innocent women...
