WTF man I will never travel there its so dangerous, damn you guys pass judgement without actually knowing the truth. The car flame thrower was an idea that I have never seen actually put on a car. Yes we have our dangerous areas and we do have violent crime but it is mostly happening in rural areas and main city centres. Cape Town city center is safe enough to walk around alone but if you walk around with you wallet bulging carrying your IPad and iphone around for everyone to see, I am afraid you are going to get mugged, but this could happen in certain areas of Brazil, New York, wherever.

I have lived in JHB and I have to say it is a more dangerous place we have high walls we have electric fencing but its not like we get robbed all the time. Lots of our crime is because of illegal immigrants and poverty. Its unfortunate because we have a really beautiful country.

As for Oscar, he has been charged with murder, he was reportedly having fight with his girlfriend the night before and also screaming was heard by neighbors before the gun shots. I was never a Oscar Pistolius fan as he was a hot head. I feel sorry for his Girlfriend and her family as she had so much potential and she was a FHM model.

I know the places and hours I can go though, I wont take my iPad out to take a photo of a favela, I know my boundaries. Americans (specially) come here thinking they are visiting their 20k (population) suburban town, where nothing evil happens, lol.

I agree it must be hard, they are not used to pay attention in what surronds them. But if you are to come here, at least do your research, any tourist guide will tell you that!

@Rmpr Here in Cape Town we have a huge amount of tourists from Germany and Holland, they do Kite Surfing here, you can see the ones that come every year and which ones are new tourists. If I was a criminal it would be easy pickings.Blend in as much as you possibly can.

It is really funny to see tourists on the beach, they find everything so different that the look on their face is priceless. It is impossible not to recognise who is Brazilian or not. However, cities like Rio are very used to receiving tons of tourists, so they will have police taking care of the nice places people go (Copacabana, Cristo, Pao de Açucar, Lagoa, Barra, etc); the problem is that they get so dazzled that they forget to take some very basic precautions. You cant pay a coconut water with a 100 reais bill and then leave your wallet out there to swim, of course your wallet on be there afterwards....

Deep shit (like murder or rape) only happens with people who risk their lifes. If you are visiting an unkown place late at night and you are feeling unconfortable, just get the fuck out of it. Dont fucking risk it only becuase the view is gorgeous or because your friends are saying you are a pussy!

Agree with you. People make out that Eastern Europe is also a dangerous place for foreigners. It's only dangerous here if you wander around in night in the wrong neighborhood. One other factor is skin color. Not many races other than european decent live here so if one is a bit darker he is going to be looked at. It's nothing to do with racism, just that we are not used to it.

@Rmpr, have you ever been to gang infested favelas? I've watched the Ross Kemp on Gangs documentaries about gang violence all over the world and Brazil was also represented. It looked bad in the favelas, really bad.
