Not a sniff of first team football so far this season, which is a shame as he's a classy player. He needs games, he should have joined our Chelsea gang at Vitesse. Mourinho could have told him he wasn't in his plans this season..

I don't think Jose ever implied that he would part of his plans. He wasn't even part of the preseason squad. But he stayed so he would be considered homegrown in the future. But he's still very young, only 18, and has all the time in the world. He can go on loan next season to get experience. Meanwhile, he's doing well with the U21 and in the youth CL.

a 25 man squad with 5 midfielders (deep), 8 defenders, 6 attacking midfielders and 3 strikers is proof enough that neither he nor baker or josh or any other "youth" player in going to get a look in unless we are ravaged with injury or are playing hopelessly useless dead rubbers.

ake is playing "EUROPEAN" football. youth CL is a better chance to grow and develop than playing at vitesse or some championship team. it gives the experience of "big european nights" and will definitely help his experience overall.

also it was ake himself who wanted to stay here at chelsea and not go on loan. this is his 3rd season at chelsea and thus from now on he will be classified as a "homegrown player in the CL group". so please know all the facts before critisizing mourinho for every small thing.

Maybe Jose wants him to be a defensive 'utility' man - defining his game in all positions so he can add more depth to his squad and his overall game?

Actually, ake as an utility player does makes the most sense out of anyone on Chelsea....

I was hoping he get some run at CM, but w.e.

In the wake of Ryan Bertrand's loan to Aston Villa, there've been plenty of questions about Chelsea's depth at fullback. Bertrand's absence meant that Chelsea are now down to three senior players -- Ashley Cole, Cesar Azpilicuetaand Branislav Ivanovic -- to cover two positions, which is dangerously light for a squad that will (hopefully) be playing a lot of matches between now and the end of the season.

Jose Mourinho is compensating for this by promoting another youngster. Nathan Ake, who saw some time with the first team as a defensive midfielder last season, is being brought into the senior squad to serve as cover:

Because Bertrand is leaving I'm bringing Ake now to the squad because he is a player that can play there, and even in an emergency
or Branislav Ivanovic can play left-back. So even though only Ashley Cole is a specialist left-back we don't have problems.

-Source:

It's not a bad idea by any measure, although Ake's performance at left back is obviously a step below what we might ahve expected from Bertrand. Ake actually playing there would require an unfortunate set of circumstances, so we're hopefully not going to see it happening, but we now have backup just in case -- and Ake will once again be developing by training with the big boys.
