Former Israeli defence minister Moshe Ya'alon has accused Israel of "ethnic cleansing" in the Gaza Strip in an interview with Israeli broadcaster Kan.

Ya'alon, who was defence minister from 2013-2016, spoke of alleged Israeli plans to expel Palestinian residents from the northern Gaza Strip and establish Israeli settlements there instead.

He said he was speaking on behalf of Israeli commanders deployed in northern Gaza who are very concerned about the situation.

"They are being put in life-threatening situations, they are facing moral dilemmas," he said, adding that they could also face charges before the International Criminal Court.

Israel was committing many war crimes in the Gaza Strip, Ya'alon said.

A huge anti-Israel banner was unfurled outside Parliament by pro-Palestinian protesters on Wednesday.

The protest, organised by Led by Donkeys, the political campaign group, saw the 40 x 40-metre banner, reading: “Yes it’s a genocide,” laid out in Parliament Square

 

In a statement to coincide with the protest, Prof Amos Goldberg, an Israeli historian, said: “Yes, it’s a genocide. And once you come to this conclusion, you cannot remain silent.

“It does not need to look like the Holocaust to be a genocide. Each genocide looks different, and not all involve the killing of millions or the entire group.

“The United Nations Genocide Convention explicitly asserts that genocide is the act of deliberately destroying a group in whole or in part. Those are the words. But there does need to be a clear intent''

 

Prof Goldberg said the Israeli government, military and media had shown “clear indication of intent to destroy Gaza”.

Just because people say it does not mean anything. 

It was a mass of people that one Sunday was saying hosanna to Jesus and in another crucify him. 

People are fickle and get influence by anything. 

I will keep saying in a genocide you destroy and have no pity on any one. Just like Hitler did with the Jews. 

Israel is not doing that, they are still helping people.  In genocide there is no mercy.

Hitler gave all the jews the chance to flee Germany. Jews were fed in Auschwitz and the Warsaw Ghetto, so that is 'mercy' as you call it right there. 

Yet it was a genocide.

Anyway showing 'mercy', allowing a few trucks in each day instead of the 300 required, as they slaughter with drones and US taxpayers dollars, does not fall into  the requisite of it not being a genocide.
