Referee attempts suicide ahead of game

A Bundesliga football match has been called off after the referee tried to commit suicide just hours before the game, according to reports in Germany.

Babak Rafati had been due to take charge of the top flight clash between Cologne and Mainz on Saturday afternoon, but was found in his apartment on Saturday morning with his wrists slashed.

Yeah I read this somewhere. Really sad...they should've let him kill himself though.

Really?!

With the right help he can get through this & turn his life around, just because he's depressed you think he should just be left to end his life?

I'm afraid now this thread will turn into a moral discussion over suicide acceptance in society... I will just say that I support free choice, but it depends on many things.. if he is mentally ill, then he needs help. If his life is irreversibly screwed, then it's not our business to say what's right or wrong for him.

It's his life, I won't go smartass on him, things aren't always as easy and trivial as they look. I even doubt it has much to do with football merely because he's a ref. It takes a lot to drive an adult person to attempting suicide.

So in a way I agree with LDN, CHOULO and Kez.

It's his life. He should have the right to choose what to do with it.

Just a thought: Do you believe that anything can absolute? If not, did you consider that maybe there exists a case where suicide is better than life?

I was on a german Chelsea forum a few minutes ago and this comment shocked me:

Mein Gott, warum muss er das nur jetzt machen? Der will doch nur Aufmerksamkeit. Man, jetzt gerät das Dortmund Spiel in den Hintergrund.

Translated: Oh my god, why did he have to do that now? He just wants attention. Man, the Dortmund match fades now in the background.

I'll just say this, if it was a member of your family, would you rather them get help & come out of it & them live to regret attempting suicide.

Or someone found your family member & had a chance to save them & give them help or just turn their back and leave them to die. You'd hate that person for the rest of your life.

With all due respect, I don't think you can make that assumption about me seeing as you know virtually nothing about me. That has never happened in my family but I like to believe that I would not blame anyone for not stopping them. Like I implied in my post, you can't presume you know people's lives enough to judge whether or not their life decisions are true.

What if they had a DNR?

I wasn't making an assumption about you, if it came across that way then I apologise, it was just a general example, but until you experience something like that for yourself you can never tell how you will react. Grief does strange things to a person, especially suicide, it can leave a family asking many questions about why it's happened, why they were left to die, & if something more could of been done to prevent it.

What if they had a DNR?

I guess that's totally different but the way CHOULO19 worded his post I feel was insensitive to the ref & his family. It's a moral decision & as human's paramedics know that it is morally right & their job to save people. We obviously don't know the facts & whether the ref asked for DNR, but people with depression should be given all the help they can be given to overcome it.
