We gave him the chance to play behind the striker for the last 20 minutes, a position he has rarely (if ever) gotten to play during his time at Chelsea and he looked really good in there. He managed to set up 2 and score 1 during his brief time in that role. Juan Mata is clearly the first choice in that role but if we were to need a temporary replacement for him in that role I think Meireles is definitely the best choice.

Meireles is an attacking midfielder. At Porto he played as a LAM in a 4-2-3-1. No surprise to see him perform well there.

Yeah I made this point a few pages back as well. He's been disastrous whenever he's had a defensive role against decent opposition. Everytime he plays higher up the field he does a good job

The problem is, we olny have one central attacking midfielder in our squad and that is reserved for Mata.

Yes his passing was (to borrow Francozola's favorite word :P ) atrocious, but that is expected. He actually wasn't all that bad yesterday, he ran more than anyone else on the pitch and was keen to defend (which is jaw-dropping, knowing his usual performances. I guess having him further up the pitch helps since his inevitable stray passes to create too much threat on our goal.

I agree! He did ok but his passing was so bad! Then again, Ramires was just as bad in terms of end product so let's not make Meireles the scapegoat. Ramires screwed up plenty of moves yesterday as well due to his poor decision making or hopeless ball control

his role was to mark yaya toure who ran the first 20 minutes when city played us at bridge last year and we were getting our asses kicked. so as not to put a similar story at the etihad rdm put raul to mark yaya and he did an excellent job and he was taken out almost as soon as barry was introduced and yaya's position changed to cam instead of the deep lying play maker. so i would not say that meireles played badly.
