  1. Is MacKenzie your daughter's first name? Isn't MacKenzie usually a family/last name? It's an American cultural thing to use common last names as first name, right? It's very common in Australia for someone to have a last name with the prefix 'Mac' or 'Mc' but I don't think I've ever met someone with a first name starting with it. Yes, it was a last name and still is, we have friends with the same last name. I am not sure when the shift to using surnames as first names occurred in the US. MacKenzie is not a family name for us, we like it for it's Scottish origin and with the two parts it gives her a few choices for nicknames. At home she is usually called Mac because it is the first part of her name and her initials are MAC. Last names starting with Mac or Mc are Gaelic in origin and the Mac or Mc means "son of". To is similar to the origin of names like Johnson or Thompson in English, literally when last names were starting to be used the person was John's son or Thom's son. 2. Well that makes sense. I was just arguing with a friend of mine My reasoning is similar, but a little different. If my watch is on my writing had then it my wrist sits on it while I write which isn't comfortable. My daughter who writes right handed wore hers on her right until last fall. She switched it to the left because the girl that sits on her right in several classes would constantly touch her watch and play with the light and buttons (it's a sports watch). MacKenzie decided to switch her watch to the other wrist before she got in trouble for being rude to the little brat. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
  3. I asked because I lived in Memphis, but Texas is better UT Austin is a good school. I was just telling RMPR about it. We are. Heading to SanAntonio and NewBraunsfels for a week this summer before we head back. To China. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
  4. Actually .... this is all too true guys. Since my phd was on evolution and psychology I come across a lot of these blind morons. When I was in the States I once gave a talk on evolution in Nebraska and one in Tennessee and almost got burned by an angry religious freak mob. Also, here in Ghent we have a society Ichtus (dutch protestants) that do exactly the same. If you think this is wack - it isn't. Google 'Scopes trial' - people (not only in the States) are very busy lobbying to get evolution out of the Biology curriculum. Creationism (or scientific creationism - Moehahahahahahahahaha sorry - as they call it is going on in Holland, Belgium, USA and is gaining momentum in Muslim countries as well). I tried doing pubic debates with creationists but to no avail. They just disregard facts and turn to 'faith'. Cognitive dissonance in its full glory!! So yes. The end of knowlegde is near. </blockquote> So, freakin' funny and scary all at the same time. Evolution is on the TN state curriculum mandates but they get around it by homeschooling. I have friends who are in every other way intelligent people but the refuse to believe in evolution or that "7 days" of creation is not seven 24 hour days. I have managed to bring one of them around to concede that evolution exists on the principles of survival of the fittest and reminding her that no where in the actual theory does it state man evolve from monkeys or apes! And that if God is a supreme being with no beginning and no end why would his day be 24 hours? Can you imagine marking time for eternity in 24 hour time periods? @stingray. Where in TN? 5. I remember her first few matches in the PL, the commentators were having fits because a woman was officiating. So over the ridiculous. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
  6. Haha! Tooyoungtoremembervhs.com!! I guess I am too old since I remember life before VHS and I remember beta tapes too! They also had a disc movie system which was the precursor to the DVD but they were the size of an LP album! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
  7. No, this is what I call our "Bible Thumpers", those whack jobs that really are kind of crazy. The either home school or send there kids to small private schools where there is little if any state or federal input on or monitoring of what they do. The US does not have national curriculum but we need it. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  8. Somethings just scare me! Check out this 4th grade science test: http://www.snopes.com/photos/signs/sciencetest.asp This worries me as a parent, a teacher, and a Christian! These people are raising a generation of kids who will be close-minded and unable to think for themselves. It is scary. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

  15. Lol yeah I guess it's just cultural differences or maybe it's just me! Lunch and a walk in the park is my idea of a perfect date. I've done it countless times with my exes, and I must admit we never got past the walking and talking and sitting part! Either our eastern society is very strict, or I'm just finding out that I'm a big coward! I think it is a cultural difference and a regional difference. Depends on what you would term a park. One of my favorite afternoon activities is to have lunch with my husband and go for a walk and talk. The nice thing about going for a walk is you aren't trapped a crossed a table and it gives us an excuse to hold hands. we embarrass our kids and occasionally our friends because after 18 years of marriage we still hold hands when we walk or sit at a table in a restaurant. 16. Well, it started almost a year ago while varying in intensity throughout. I also guess it is either psychological or a sleeping disorder. There have been some incidents, such as grandparents's death, break-up with girlfriend, the first two thirds of this season lol, but nothing I'd not easily deal with emotionally or sth which would be like a caesura. Sleep disruptions are not easy to detect, because although you are asleep you may be missing the deeper REM cycles. Often what we deal with well when we are awake can still disrupt our sleep. Try taking melatonin to help you stay asleep or sleep more soundly. You should only need it for about a few days to help get your body clock on a better rhythm. Another suggestion is to add vitamin D to your diet, those of us living in not so sunny climates or work all day inside don't get enough sun shine so we don't produce enough naturally. I used take it in the fall and winter for mood and all at my doctors suggestion because new studies show it may help prevent certain cancers. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
  17. I certainly hope he proves you right! May be it's just me but i feel the profession of 'Teaching' has lost its beauty. Now a days, teachers don't really care much about the whole class. Don't get me wrong, but for me Teaching is one of the biggest commitments you can make and i don't see teachers now respecting that. Teachers basically form the next generation. I think people have started to take it very lightly!I have had 3 teachers in my life who i absolutely love. One of them was my Maths teacher and other two were a lovely lovely ladies who were a positive influence on my life. I still meet them, i touch their feet(marked as a sign of respect here, you touch the feet of elders who you respect). But other than them, i never felt they were really interested in teaching. I never felt a connection with the rest of them! Ofcourse the kids can be nuisance most of the time but still. Teaching is one profession that has to be taken very seriously and i am glad you are!! Teaching is a calling, it is something you do because it is part of you, I know many people that teach who should not and it saddens me. I have watched as the destroy potential just because they have no clue how to nurture it. I teach because I love the little moments when that kid who has gotten nothing else all year finally looks up and smiles because he understood something. I can reach a brilliant child easily but if I can reach one child who said I can't and here him say I can, then I am doing my job well. @Manpe, I am who I am on the Internet or in person I cannot hide that and don't want to! I wish you the best of luck and I really think you will be amazing!!
  18. So I got the job and am starting on friday... nervous as FUCK!! You will rock!! Take a deep breath and remember we are all behind you!! Congrats!! So freakin' proud of you!! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
  19. I wasn't lucky enough, then!! I would have loved to show you how to at least see the "mystery" of chemistry!! I am working with a young man now who's teacher's think are a lost cause and I am not quite ready to give up. I think he is so used to everyone seeing him as dumb that he is willing to accept that as the case... But I see potential in him. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
  20. Irritated my contact ripped this morning and it left a wedge in my eye and I can't get that little bit out ugh Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
  21. Ah, well i wouldn't blame my teacher. I never really gave her good marks, hence she probably gave more importance to the guys who actually gave her better marks. I guess, Chemistry wasn't meant for me! I have seen a lot of people complain about History being boring or Mathematics being difficult, similarly Chemistry was that one subject i never could get into my head. Mind you, i worked the hardest in Chemistry and yet couldn't understand the concept of covalent bond, organic reactions etc. Ah, you would have made me try harder to reach you but I am not the usual type of teacher. 22. Welcome, I am one of the few women on the board and also an American. So I will gladly welcome any one who deflect any of the "abuse" the guys dish out ( it is all in good fun ) Join in the fun! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
  23. True, but for me i always preferred the exactness of Maths, and things like History. I like the melding of the maths and chemistry!
  24. Yeah at school, the periodic table etc, just got extremely boring. A good teacher in chemistry makes all the difference! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
  25. It counts if it makes you interested chemistry is so much more than what they teach in school and so much more interesting. @Dion: I am tutoring a young man for his iGCSE chem exam so I very quick to pick up the little mistakes because each one can gain him a mark back if he doesn't make them.
