Me personally, I never rated him highly because I know him a little bit from Bundesliga and German national team. He is a very good 1 vs 1 defender and has the athletic abilities. But he never had the football IQ. I have a theory why that may be the case. He played most of his amateur and street football career as a striker and midfielder. Only later when he was 15-17 years old, he started playing CB and later on he went to Stuttgart. He started very late with football and he was playing other position and he never really developt the basics. He only relied on his athleticism, which is enough for Youth and most Bundesliga teams. I think RLC did better yesterday. He looks rusty with the ball though, but overall way better performance than last two weaks as left winger. Don't forget that he did not train with the ball for months after Corona. He only did endurance, sprinting and body exercises. I believe in Ruben to get better. Step by step. Rüdiger was played with AC and Azpi in a 3 man defense and there was also Kante in front of them. Rüdiger is a good 1 vs 1 defender, but he does not have the football IQ to lead the defense. So his positional awareness and football IQ in general is not great. Also, he never ever had any decent ball playing skills. That is the reason why I started criticizing Rüdiger last season and nobody noticed what I saw. Now, people are saying he is not good enough. For me, Zouma is the better defender.
