Was thinking the same. Player can now always point to lukaku who is not performing and say "Hey I am better than this guy, at least i do my job" and demand the same wage. I don't think the club has problems paying any but we set a precedent now. The lukaku signing broke a ceiling. I was against this mostly for economic reasons from the very beginning.

The squad is clearly not meant to play 3atb tho. Playing AWB or Luka Shaw as CBs when shed out 250m in fees and wages for VArane and maguire would be hilarious. Same as teaching pogba to play at a high tempo. So many spoilt brats in that team and the terrible board/management. Conte would be sitting on a minefield with his short temper. Their main strength would be diluted. Greenwood, Martial, Rashford, Penandes, Pogba (dont see him playing in the pivot for conte), Cavani, Penaldo, Lingard all competing for 3 slots? Would love to see that. Soon enough he would signing Candreva and Edin Dzeko for back up lol. Even Conte won't win the league with this toxic club. He might be able to compete with us for 3rd place but might very well fuck ManUre even more in the long haul. Maybe worth it if we indeed can't make the step up.

A part of me would love to see Conte shoehorning Wan bissaka into an RWB and play 3atb with their slow-ass CBs. Surely they would not click right away given these upheavals. Also Conte+Penaldo? Match made in heaven. The biggest factor would be if Conte really wants to implement a 3atb system there, he can only play 3 attackers and given their plethora of options, a few will be unhappy. On a different note, Zidane is apparently in the conversation as well. Could be an interesting option for them with his counter attacking football. Outsider odds for Penaldo becoming player manager lmao

It's excruciating to think that those two had been identified by our scouts long before anyone else as the generational talents they are before being shoved out the door by Mourinho. Defense wins championships tho (not necessarily leagues tbh). I would be more confident if we had produced a similarly resilient performance vs City as we did vs Liverpool but I think the team that beat City 3 times last season and won at Anfield is still out there. We just have to be bold and drop Lukaku, defend with the whole team and might nick a point in each of those remaining direct fixtures. We are head and shoulders above the rest including leicester and ManUre with Ole, so we only have ourselves to blame if we fall short in those games. I also think we are 3rd favourites for the title but Liverpool's squad is paper thin and a lengthy injury to only two of their key players Alisson, VVD, Salah, Mane will break them. ManCity still favs for me.
