The Chelsea midfielder did the damage while training for Ghana's African Cup of Nations clash with Burkina Faso on Tuesday. The 27-year-old had already been struggling with the hamstring problem which prevented him from starting Friday's 3-1 defeat by Ivory Coast, but officials confirmed this was a fresh setback. Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac said: "I don't know the extent of the injury but we will find out later." Essien will now be a major doubt for Tuesday's game, which Ghana must win if they are to stand any chance of progressing into the latter stages. Ivory Coast have already qualified from Group B, with four points from two games, while Burkina Faso have one point and Ghana none
