  1. Should Chelsea and Atletico de Madrid be paired in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois CAN play against his parent club... ...but only if Atletico are willing to pay at least €6 million. Though the exact figure has yet to be confirmed, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo has confirmed there is a clause in Courtois' loan deal to the Spanish side that means the club must cough up a hefty fee for the young Belgian to feature against the Blues. Sky Sports are reporting that the clause operates per match, meaning Atletico would have to cough up as much as £8 million for Courtois to play over two legs. It means that Dani Aranzubia, the 34-year-old second-choice keeper, would be likely to start, with Cerezo claiming the fee is "too much" for his club to even contemplate paying. However, with the likelihood of Atletico securing their first La Liga title since 1996 and the considerable payments from UEFA for reaching the semi-finals, there is a small possibility that the Belgian will be able to feature. The news comes as doubts have emerged over the long-term security of Petr Cech's position as Chelsea's number 1, with Mourinho reportedly keen to bring Courtois back to Stamford Bridge after the summer.
  2. Cesar Azpilicueta has been voted the winner of the TalkChelsea Player of the Year award for 2013/14. In a vote carried out by TalkChelsea members, Azpilicueta beat the other contenders in a four-man shortlist, including Eden Hazard, John Terry and Gary Cahill. Despite beginning the season as a utility man, and understudy on either flank to regular full-backs Branislav Ivanovic and Ashley Cole, Azpilicueta has taken his opportunity and made 38 appearances this season, starting 34 of those games. Scoring against Arsenal early in the season, Azpilicueta has also recorded two assists, with his deflected cross setting up Demba Ba's late winner against Paris St-Germain on Tuesday evening to send the Blues through to the Champions League last four. Azpilicueta - known as Azpi or "Dave" amongst Chelsea supporters - has enjoyed a magnificent season, and has played an integral role in maintaining one of the fiercest defensive records in Europe. Indeed, as well as being a vital figure in a defence tat has conceded the least goals and maintained the most clean sheets in the Premier League, Azpilicueta and Chelsea have only conceded one goal at Stamford Bridge thus far in 2014. A model of consistency and professionalism, Azpilicueta first truly broke onto the scene under the tutelage of Rafael Benitez last season as he competed for a right-back berth with Ivanovic, but the unassuming Spaniard has blossomed under José Mourinho into the Premier League's best left-back. Everyone at TalkChelsea wishes Dave all the best for the remainder of the season, and also for the World Cup where he is likely to do well for his country given his fine form in 2014. Congratulations!
  3. We have two of the top five goalkeepers in world football. That's a great statistic until you realise you can only play one of them, something has to give!
  4. And that's it! Voting is closed! CESAR AZPILICUETA IS THE WINNER OF THE TALKCHELSEA.NET PLAYER OF THE SEASON AWARD!
  5. A striker - even the best striker in the world - will usually only score one chance from the four/five he has in a match. Cavani is no different. My concern is he won't get that number of chances here.
  6. What's Diego's buyout clause, £35 million? You'd argue Cech and Torres are both worth £10-12 million each in the current climate, so the pair of them plus the amount you suggested is quite realistic.
  7. Yes, because 40+ members nominated those four! and IMHO, no-one else deserves to be up there.
  8. May I remind people Hazard didn't show up til we beat Sunderland 4-3?
  9. I predict: Bayern vs Chelsea Atletico vs Real
  10. They'll put in the performance of a lifetime just because they're playing against us, the cunts, then roll over for the next two months, á la Villa.
  11. Cech had a very good game yesterday, but the point I made on the previous page is that his form oscillates. He can make a terrible mistake and then a magnificent save in every game. Courtois' best, in my mind, isn't as good as Cech's best, but Courtois has 10 years to improve and reach that level. One can argue Thibaut is the more consistent. Cech, on his day, such as against Bayern in the Super Cup, can be a 90-rated goalkeeper. There are days where he looks more like an 80. Courtois is a solid 85 season-long.
  12. Being able to do what we did last night without him has given me more faith in the team. Shows we're not just a one man show. Willian and Schurrle were magical last night.
  13. That is surely beyond fake. Far too similar to our 11/12 away.
  14. I suggested this to my dad the author day, with Cech going to Atletico. Wouldn't everyone be happy then? He'd be leaving the 2nd best club in England for the 2nd best club in Spain, no step down, and he'd be guaranteed UCL football for the next 2/3 seasons with that squad Simeone has. Plus he'll have a friend over there in Torres
  15. "Shows you how good a job Brendan Rodgers has done with us. He's spent literally peanuts and we play football that is above and beyond this bollocks on show. We deserve the title, and Rodgers deserves manager of the season in all leagues." HAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAAAAA
  16. Chelsea are into the Champions League semi-finals after a courageous comeback win over Paris St-Germain. Andre Schurrle gave his side the perfect start when he slammed home David Luiz's flick to give the Blues the half-time advantage, before Demba Ba slid in a second goal just three minutes from time to send his side into the last four of the Champions League, and the Blues' supporters into raptures. After their shock loss at Crystal Palace and then the second half capitulation in Paris last week, José Mourinho said his team needed to show more "balls" in the second leg - and the Special One most certainly got the reaction he desired from his players. Despite losing the talismanic Eden Hazard to what looked like a tight hamstring with just over a quarter-of-an-hour played, the Blues were able to rally and provide a night equally as memorable as the last time the Blues were 1-3 down on aggregate in a European tie. That time around Roberto di Matteo oversaw a terrific revival as his side battled to a magnificent 4-1 win thanks to Branislav Ivanovic's winner deep in extra time. That season, immediately after losing in Naples, the Blues hosted Stoke City in a weekend Premier League game and were victorious. History repeats itself, or so they say - and a repeat of that incredible run of results here has propelled Chelsea into the semi-finals of Europe's premier club competition, at the same time as potentially breathing new life into their league title challenge. This result is indebted as much to the vociferous backing provided by the Chelsea supporters as it is to the players themselves, but this performance represents a coming of age of Mourinho's side. Whilst this may prove one last hoorah for the veteran quartet of Petr Cech, Samuel Eto'o, Frank Lampard and John Terry, Mourinho's young squad proved themselves against one of Europe's very best sides, with each of the fourteen men who took to the pitch putting in flawless individual performances. The game endured something of a staid opening as both teams cautiously probed away at one another, but the atmosphere exploded inside the stadium when Schurrle - a substitute for the crocked Hazard - volleyed in David Luiz's glancing touch from a Branislav Ivanovic throw. That goal shook Stamford Bridge to the very foundations, and whilst PSG looked threatening on the counter-attack with Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi particularly terrific, it was Chelsea who continued to force the issue and they twice came within millimetres of the second goal they so desired as both Schurrle and Oscar rattled the crossbar. First Schurrle thumped a stunning effort from fully 30 yards off the bar with Salvatore Sirigu clawing at nothing but air, before Oscar hit almost the exact same part of the goalframe with a sumptuous free-kick after Eto'o was upended. At the opposite end, Cech had to be alert to paw away a devilish delivery from Lavezzi that was reminiscent of Luiz's calamitous own goal in Paris last week. But Chelsea were not to be denied, and as Mourinho threw on Demba Ba and Fernando Torres in search of a dramatic late winner, it was the Senegalese who sealed a miraculous comeback as he slid in at the first post to turn Cesar Azpilicueta's deflected cross beyond Sirigu. It is the best moment in the troubled Chelsea career of the Senegalese striker, and even if he moves on in the summer, this goal will not quickly be forgotten. That goal sparked incredible celebrations amongst the Blues supporters and Mourinho alike, with the Portuguese sprinting down the touchline to join his team in mobbing the goalscorer. But there was still time for PSG to muster one final chance, and that came when substitute Marquinhos fired from the edge of the area, only for Cech to expertly tip the ball around his near post. Beaten by Javier Pastore in the 93rd minute in that exact spot, Cech ensured that it would be his side that ended the tie with the last laugh. To whoever faces Chelsea in the semi-finals, be it Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Barcelona - we don't give up. Click here to view the article
  17. Agreed, best shot-stopper in the Premier League bar none.
  18. The thing is, if we do sell him (which we won't, I'm being hypothetical here), it will be for £80m or more (he's been as good this season as Bale was for Spurs last year). With that amount of money you can bring in a world class replacement or three.
  19. £10 to any of our Belgian brothers if they don't vote for Eden! I joke of course, amazed to see Cesar out in front already!!
  20. Samu is training alone - with Rui Faria, José's assistant, who was his fitness coach at Inter and in his first stint here. Possibly making sure Samu is at least half-fit and can play some role tomorrow. A half-fit Eto'o is better than Ba or Torres.
