Yeah I think Belgium are missing a creative central midfielder to become up there with the top NTs. Witsel can break up play very well and Dembele is a powerhouse, but I think you're missing someone centrally who has an eye for that defense-splitting pass.

I think the blame for the distances between our lines is shared by the players and the manager. But ultimately, yes, it is mostly the job of the number 10 to drop deep to receive the ball just like we've seen KDB and Oscar do in preseason so far. But Mata is uncomfortable with his back to goal and Rafa did not want to sacrifice Mata's ability to get more goals and assists at number 10 for Oscar who does drop back. He tried to fix this by playing 4-4-1-1 with deeper wingers, but Oscar is not a winger and Hazard is an attacker and is not used to playing deep. It worked to some extent in the EL where we had Moses on one of the wings.

65% of Mikel's passes last season in the league were forward, which is more than any other central midfielder we had (Rami 63.7%, Frank 62.2%, Oriol 62.4%). So that's not true at all. And his average pass length was 17m as opposed to 17 for Lamps and 16 for Rami, so he myth about him only playing easy short passes is also incorrect. Yes, Mikel is not suited for pressing high up the pitch because he does not have the pace to run back; AVB tried it and it did not work too well. But for a team with a low block that likes to win the ball in their own half and then launch counter-attacks, like Jose Mourinho does, I think Mikel can be instrumental.

The guys over at MilanMania were very kind to answer a few questions ahead of our game against AC Milan tonight in the Guinness International Champions Cup. Here is what they had to say about the tie: -First, how long have you been a Milan fan? And why did you choose the Rossoneri? reza- Late 80s. For me it was several factors falling into place. One of my early football memories is Spain 82 which got transformed into love of Serie A and eventually Milan with the team that was built into the late 80s.Nalx- Somewhere around 1988. With Milan's financial state and the lack of passion from Berlusconi, a 8 point manager is the right choice. -Milan just about finished in third place last season, but you certainly finished the season on a high. What are your expectations for the upcoming season and how do you rate your title chances? reza- Unless glaring weaknesses are addressed 2nd place is the ceiling.Nalx- Certainly things don't seem as bleak as they did at this juncture last year. Sure opponents like Juve and Fiorentina have strengthened their squads, but with few additions like Honda or more lately Ljajic, and with a good start, I don't see why Milan can't win the league.ZvonimirBoban- I expect us to at least finish 2nd, with our chances for scudetto I rate at 50:50 with Juventus.Aficio- I expect the growing of youngsters more than some trophies which are quite difficult to get with this squad. 3rd in Serie A and quaterfinal in CL are my expectation for the team. -Like most Italian teams, the transfer market has been a bit quite this summer for Milan. When I hear players not involved in summer international duty talk about tiredness - in July - I shudder.Nalx- In pre-season, getting the new ideas (if any) across the team or trying to make new players gel is more important than the result. That's why the way Milan conceded five early goals against City should be taken much more seriously than the number itself or the difference in level of fitness between the two teams.ZvonimirBoban- A lot has changed since 2009. Mourinho's return will be good if luck is also on your side. With Sir Alex gone the Man United sheen will wane as well. I'll take De Bruyne but not Torres please.Nalx- Quite familiar since EPL was shown on TV often here. I don't know much about Chelsea young players like de Bruyne or that Traore kid but I did like what I saw from Lukaku with West Brom last season. If I have to pick one though it'll be Oscar. Hazard is slightly better but he predominantly moves from the left and we already have El Shaarawy there. Besides, at least until recently, we always have some Brasilian flavor in our team.ZvonimirBoban- Very familiar, EPL is very popular in my country. I think you have the best set of attacking midfielders and keepers at the EPL. The best young talent IMO is Lukaku but we are already crowded with young potential or even worldclass forwards, so if I'd like to pick one it is an attacking midfielder (the one position I think we should strengthen): Oscar, Hazard, or Mata. I don't know... I'll pick Hazard, I think he'll be one of the most successful footballer in the world at the time of his prime.Aficio- Frankly, I was more familiar with EPL than Serie A because EPL was broadcasted earlier in my country. I like Zola's Chelsea more than Abra's Chelsea (I also like Cantona's MU more than any versions). Hazard is the player I like, but I doubt his success in Serie A where there is much less space. -Milan boast an array of young talents, especially in attack but who do you think is your most important player and who should we look out for in the match? reza- Absences and injuries limit what you will see at this match. A sometimes struggling defense is further weakened, the attack will be the strength.Nalx- Since this is just a friendly I wouldn't look too much into it. Right now Balotelli is without a doubt our best player but I don't know if he'll be fit enough to play. He caught a fever when he returned last week and missed one or two days of training.ZvonimirBoban- For now, it's still Mario Balotelli. But when on fire, Stephan El Shaarawy. He does so much more than only scoring goals.Aficio- Balotelli is surely the most important. However, I'm waiting for the youngsters like Petagna or K. Boateng. -It’s only preseason, so the managers are likely to still be experimenting with teams, but what do you think are the lineup and formation that Allegri will use tomorrow? reza- Can't be sure, a look at the last friendly vs Sao Paulo means not many are available for much of a variation from that game. Defense should feature Silvestre, newly arrived from Inter, though.Nalx- Lots of youngsters and bench players, I guess, especially at the back.ZvonimirBoban- Our backline is full of injury, 4 of our CBs are injured, so I tell you, you'll play against 3rd tier defense of us. Playing long balls made much more sense when we had Drogba, Malouda, Kalou..etc, but is almost pointless now with Mata, Oscar, Hazard, Torres who are all weak in the air as is evident in the terrible long ball accuracy. We actually seemed to have more trouble moving the ball to the front four against mid-table teams than top teams because they leave less space behind them. This haunted us for the wholes season, but I think it was most evident in the league cup against Swansea. They pressed with their attackers and still managed to maintain a deep defensive line. And the result is that we conceded two goals at home because the CBs had no where to go with the ball except long and inevitable Iva ended up giving it away in dangerous areas twice. Even in the return leg, I remember we had something like 70% possession but barely mustered a few shots on target. I believe that this season, Mikel was indeed average and struggled to be influential, I do not deny that. A lot of that is his fault; his form was inconsistent, and some of his performances after AFCON were bad. But a lot of it was not just down to him as well: our system (and at times lack of) did not fit him at all. Mikel is a utilization player. he is a team player while we were relying on individual skills most of the times in both attack and defense. He also lacked a partner that suites him, bar Ramires to some extent. That's why almost all of our best results (wins against Arsenal and Tottenham, FA cup games against united..etc) came when we had Mikel-Ramires in the pivot. Now, if I were to judge on this season alone, then I would actually agree that he can be no more than a squad player. But knowing Mikel from previous seasons, and knowing what he is capable of, I think he can do very well under Jose. I think with Jose's counter-attacking football and partners like Ramires/MVG and KDB/Oscar he can be instrumental to the team just like he was under Carlo when he had Ballack and Lamps next to him. At least I hope so, because it could prove vital for our title challenge. Regarding the squad depth, I think it did play a part, not just in tiredness, but also in the sense that when we rested some key players, the replacements were just not good enough (the home loss to QPR springs to mind). I believe we will see improvements in the performances of last season's players, but not only because of squad depth, but also because the players that were new to the team last season, like Hazard, Oscar, Azpi, have now managed to get used to the PL and have built chemistry with the rest of the team.

The 40m being reported is most likely rubbish. We are not desperate for him, he's the one who wants to leave. Not to mention the club has made it clear on several occasions that we won't be spending that kind of money. If this is going to go through, I think the fee will be somewhere between the original 24m reported by Sky and 30m, but not more.
