LONG-TERM DEAL FOR BERTRAND Ryan Bertrand has committed his future to Chelsea today (Wednesday) as he signed a five-year contract. The 23-year-old England international will now continue preparations with the national squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine, before returning to Chelsea where he has already started two of our three league games this season. Bertrand originally joined the Chelsea Academy in July 2005 from Gillingham and impressed sufficiently to be part of the first team's pre-season tour to America a year later. Having played for our youth and reserve teams, a period of loan moves followed when he gained vital first team experience. Bournemouth, Oldham, Norwich, Reading and Nottingham Forest were ports of call and he amassed over 150 appearances at Championship level prior to making his Chelsea debut as a substitute versus Birmingham in April 2011. As understudy to Ashley Cole last season, he played 15 games although it was directly in front of Cole on the pitch in Munich that the last and most significant of those appearances was made. Making his European debut, Bertrand took on a wide-midfield role in the Champions League Final, reverting to a position he had played in his youth. Having been selected for England through the youth age groups, and for the GB side at the London 2012 Olympics, Bertrand made his senior England debut in a friendly against Italy last month. He has made 15 starts for Chelsea with a further four substitute appearances.

Another weekend in the books, and quite a few more loanees to touch on. With the window shutting on Friday, some of our youngsters weren't yet involved in the action over the weekend. That doesn't mean that there weren't a bunch of youngsters in action, as you'll see by the ridiculous length to the loan roundup. Most of our youngsters should be able to use the international break to fully integrate themselves into their new club, so when club action resumes I'd guess we'll have even more to write about. Romelu Lukaku (West Bromwich Albion): WBA had a pair of fixtures this week, and Lukaku was not involved in either of them. He picked up a slight injury to his ankle in training, and is expected back for WBA's next fixture. It's unclear if he'll be taking part in Belgium's World Cup qualifying over the next week and a half, but the injury doesn't sound too serious. Kevin De Bruyne (Werder Bremen): KDB played eighty five minutes as Werder defeated HSV, and he was pretty solid throughout. He looked to be positioned just behind the striker, and he again moved around to many different areas of the attack. All in all, it was a better showing from De Bruyne than it was from the loanee he opposed. Jeffrey Bruma (HSV): Bruma had a very uninspiring performance at right back as HSV lost to Werder over the weekend. He wasn't overly poor individually, but the overall performance of the defense was far from fantastic. I doubt his place in the eleven is under threat though, as it would be very, very harsh to single out Bruma for the team's performance on the weekend. He did give away a penalty, one of a pair that HSV would give Werder. The video highlights can be found here: Ulises Davila (Sabadell): Davila had himself a solid outing despite seeing less of the ball than he would have liked. I suppose that will happen when facing Barcelona's B side though, as they tend to dominate possession in the same way that the senior squad does. Gael Kakuta (Vitesse): Kakuta didn't seal his loan deal in time to play this weekend, but I highly doubt he'll struggle to get on the pitch. Tomas Kalas (Vitesse): Kalas again started for Vitesse, and he played ninety minutes of fantastic defense as Vitesse defeated Feyenoord 1-0. Patrick van Aanholt (Vitesse): Like Kalas, PvA played the full ninety in a very impressive display by Vitesse. He's now firmly entrenched in the starting lineup, and has been very good on the whole. Kenneth Omeruo (ADO Den Haag): Omeruo and Den Hagg lost 1-0 over the wekend, but the young Nigerian stood out in the loss for good reasons. He was exceptionally active on the evening, defending well and providing quite a bit of threat in the attack. All told, it was one of the better displays I've seen from one of our lesser know loanees. Amin Affane (Roda JC): After Affane's loan deal dragged for several weeks, the youngster finally made his debut. He'd come on to play the last 30 minutes of the tie, and he was very good overall. The highlight of the night was certainly this though: Thibaut Courtois (Atletico Madrid): I'd imagine most of us saw Courtois in action versus Chelsea, so I'm not going to get into this one too much. He conceded once, but he looked to have the shot covered before it took a deflection on the way into the net. If you want to watch the highlights again, they are all over youtube. I don't though, so I'm not embedding them. Matej Delac (Vitoria SC): Delac was firmly attached to the Vitoria bench yet again. Milan Lalkovic (Vitoria SC): Unlike Delac, Lalkovic is quickly earning himself more minutes. He came on over the weekend with Vitoria trailing by a pair, and the game ended in a draw. Lalkovic was very good in this one, and it wouldn't surprise me to see him get a start pretty soon. Yossi Benayoun (West Ham): Yossi did not dress for West Ham's game over the weekend. I'd have to imagine he will be a regular for them from this point forward. Thorgan Hazard (Zulte Waregem): The younger Hazard did not complete his move in time to play this weekend. I'm sure we'll see him in the next loan roundup. Josh McEachran (Middlesbrough): McEachran was rested during League Cup action as Middlesbrough focuses on capturing promotion, and Josh played another fantastic ninety over the weekend as league play resumed. They'd lose a tough one, but it certainly wasn't due to a poor showing by McEachran. He did, however, pick up a yellow. Nathaniel Chalobah (Watford): Chalobah joined Watford on deadline day, so he did not take part over the weekend. I'd imagine that won't be the case for our next roundup. Ben Gordon (Birmingham City): Birmingham had a pair of fixtures this week, but Gordon was only involved in one of them. He'd play seventy minutes in Capital One Cup action, but he would not feature over the weekend. From all accounts, Gordon had a decent if unspectacular game mid-week before regular starter David Murphy was inserted as he rehabbed a minor injury. Sam Hutchinson (Nottingham Forest): Hutchinson was not involved in Forest's League Cup tie midweek, but boy did he have a heck of a Saturday. He made his first start for the Championship side, played extremely well throughout as the right back, and capped his showing with his first professional goal. Whether or not Hutch will be first choice remains to be seen, but he looked fantastic this past weekend. Sam Walker (Bristol Rovers): Walker had a rough 2-0 loss over the weekend, but he was neither great nor terrible in this one. He was busy, however, as Bristol were thoroughly outplayed. Rohan Ince (Yeovil Town): Ince dressed for both of Yeovil's ties this week, and he made his debut for the club with 12 minutes or so remaining of their Capital One Cup tie midweek. He'd remain glued to the bench over the weekend, and now he's looking to be fit again after injury. His role going forward will be worth watching. Archange Nkumu (Yeovil Town): Nkumu was on the bench for both of Yeovil's games this week, but he went unused in both of them. Conor Clifford (Portsmouth): Clifford was an unused sub over the weekend. James Ashton (Charlton): Ashton is apparently away at Charlton, as he played fifteen minutes for their U21's over the weekend.
