Actually in Brazil we call DM "volates". It doesnt matter if you play a more defensive role, like Mikel or if you has a more agressive aproach. Mikel would be callen 1st volante, and Remires 2nd volante. Actually nowadays in Brazil some people believe that every team need at least 2 DM, or they will get too much defensive. Its killing brazilian football. Today we played with Ganso - Ramires - Lucas. How you expect creativity with 2/3 of the mid composed by Lucas and Ramires ? I think thats is our problem in the mid. Barcelona has Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets. Xavi is a playmaker, and Iniesta has also the skills to attack, disarm, defend, give good paces and score goals. The best we could do last season was Lampard - Essien - Ramires or Lampard - Mikel - Essien. This mid is so bad, it lacks the creativity, thats why in many games getting the ball in the mid and trying to create things. For a guy that is not a mid or a playmaker, he did a decent job. Lampard - Makelele - Ballack wasnt the most creative mid in the world, but it was good, because Makelele knew how to disarm, has good passes and was really quick with the ball, Ballack and Lampard had the physical power and they knew how distribute the ball in the mid when we were attacking and had quick responses to the counter-atacks. It was also a heavy mid. Our current mid is not creative and is competent as it was with Lampard - Makele - Ballack or with Lampard - Makelele - Thiago/Essien. If Boas want to play in a 4-3-3, our mid is good enough if we are going to play atacking football, and is not good enough if we are going to have a more pragmatic approach. In a 4-3-3 system you must have the right players and they must be really good. Lampard is 33 years old, is not playing world class anymore, he cant be a starting XI next season. Essien is an injury prone and it seems his best days belong to the past. If we are going to play in a 4-3-3 system, I think that a mid with Lampard - Parker - Modric would be decent enough to fight for CL trophy. If we want more we should look for someone to replace Lampard. Im not only talking about big names. Im talking about the old days when players like Lampard and Terry were barely known around the world and become world classes under the right manager for that time. Im sure the are some players like that around the world.

If our fate rely on Modric then we are hopeless. Not saying we need Kaka with his current form and with his age, but Modric is a good player but not the salvation of Chelsea's midfield.

This. The problem is that many fans try to see positive things everywhere. Mikel has a lot of limitations, but his lovers keep saying: You dont understand his role. Mikel does not have a special role that gives the team a balance. He has limitations, thats why he is pragmatic, defensive and only try to mark and disarm. He wont try anything special because he cant do it. Mikel is not awful as footballer, but he awful for a club that aims to rule the world. We need a guy like Makelele or old-Essien. Mikel is the kind of player You always expect a terrible mistake in a crucial moment of the game. I will never forget those stupid mistakes against City in 2009/10 season, we almost lost the PL because of those silly mistakes. He also gives the ball so easily under pressure, and its really difficult to see him giving a good long pass, and that is crucial in modern game: a DM that make good long passes. When the team is atacking he is poor. Not because he did not score, Makelele also scored only one goal, but because he is not kick enough and he often made the wrong decisions. For me Mikel and Kalou are in the same boat. Players that will never "flourish", and its unbeliveable that they are still here after all those years. He is not the kind of character a winning CL side has.

There is a bias with that kind of thing. How many shirts people were going to buy anyway? I mean, the guy go to buy the new kit, and then he decides buying one with Torres name. So that shirt was going to be sold anyway. So, saying how many shirts with Torres name were sold, doesnt mean anything. You have to see how Torres incresead the numbers of shirts sold. If every year Chelsea sell 2m shirts, and now it was 2.1m, Torres impact wasnt that big. Thats why Its hard to think that Chelsea almost paid Torres after 6 miserable months only selling shirts. I dont think that the profit with shirts in this period incresead 50m compared with last season.
