Reece James injury and more Chelsea updates https://thedailybriefing.io/i/139743448/reece-james-injury-and-more-Chelsea-updates I want to send a message to Reece James that we wish him all the best after his latest injury setback - he’s a great player, a great leader in the Chelsea dressing room, and a great lad, and he’s been really unlucky again as he now looks to be out until February/March. Chelsea will now discuss internally with specialists what is the best way to deal with this injury, perhaps with surgery, which might mean waiting a little longer but with the aim of finally getting James back at his best level and able to perform consistently. He can’t be always injured - Chelsea want to protect James and so they want to discuss the best solution to have him at the best conditions as soon as possible. Let’s see what Chelsea will decide, but again we really wish him all the best. We won’t see him on the pitch again in 2023, but hopefully it won’t be too long after that. To once again answer questions on Mauricio Pochettino, my understanding remains the same - he is safe in his job for now. The situation is under control, even if the club clearly can’t be happy with how things are going on the pitch. Still, it takes time, Chelsea changed a lot of players. If you look at their team one year ago and their team now, it’s completely different. There are many, many points and many factors making the difference at Chelsea in this moment, including the age of the players, including crucial players like Romeo Lavia, Christopher Nkunku - it’s €110million invested on these two players and they didn’t have the chance to play one single minute, while many other players are also injured. So it’s been an unlucky beginning of the season, of course there are many problems, but they’re still backing Pochettino, they’re still trusting Pochettino, of course waiting for different results, but at the moment I have no message on any imminent change at Chelsea. Noni Madueke’s future has also still not been decided - a loan could be a smart solution, but we’ll see, it will be something they need to discuss internally soon. Obviously there would be a lot of interest in Madueke because he’s a talented young player, but Chelsea trust him, so let’s see what happens.

Premier League TV Deal 2025-29 https://swissramble.substack.com/p/premier-league-tv-deal-2025-29 The Premier League has concluded the sale of its domestic TV rights for the 2025-29 cycle in what was described as the largest sports media rights deal ever concluded in the UK. Chief Executive, Richard Masters, said, “We are delighted to announce new deals with Sky Sports and TNT Sports that will extend our partnership for a further four years and see more Premier League matches than ever before shown live from 2025/26 onwards.” So the Premier League has basically renewed agreements with its trusted broadcast partners, as BBC Sports retained the free-to-air highlights package, so “Match of the Day” is safe. Deal Value The Premier League said that the new agreements would deliver a total of £6.7 bln in revenue across the four-year period, inclusive of a 4% increase in live rights value compared to the previous process. Eagle-eyed observers will have noticed that the new deal has been extended from the usual three-year cycle to four years. The rationale for this change is to increase revenues in a challenging rights market and give greater certainty to both clubs and broadcast partners. Domestic Rights Trend The new deal was the first time that domestic TV rights had increased for a while, as the cost had decreased by 8% in the 2019-22 cycle from £5.3 bln to £4.9 bln before being rolled over in the current 2022-25 cycle, largely due to the COVID pandemic. However, the huge £6.7 bln headline figure was a little misleading, as this covered a longer period of four years. If we were to pro-rate this to the customary three years, it would be worth “only” £5.1 bln, though that would still be 3% higher than the current £4.9 bln. The total domestic deal includes £6.4 bln for live rights plus another £300m for the BBC highlights package, which was unchanged at £75m a year. The live rights have increased by 4% from £4.7 bln to a pro-rated £4.8 bln. The new deal is pretty good, albeit not a patch on the glory days when the Premier League enjoyed exponential growth, rising by 64% (£1.2 bln) to £3.2 bln in 2013-16, then another 67% (£2.2 bln) in the following 2106-19 cycle. On the other hand, as the infamous investment guru Jim Slater once said, “Elephants don’t gallop.”

How can five teams qualify for the Champions League? The two leagues that have the best coefficients this season will get an extra place in the UCL group stage next season. If England is in the top two, fifth in the Premier League will qualify for the Champions League. Individual club coefficient isn't relevant; it goes to the next team in the domestic table. The good news for the Premier League is it has been in the top two in six of the past seven seasons. 2016-17: Spain and England 2017-18: England and Spain 2018-19: England and Spain 2019-20: Spain and Germany 2020-21: England and Spain 2021-22: England and the Netherlands 2022-23: England and Italy In 2019-20, Germany pipped England to second place by just one victory. So the Premier League is pretty much nailed on for five UCL places? English clubs have been dominant and have comfortably been in the top two leagues in the past three seasons. It's looking good, but there's a twist. The Premier League will have eight clubs in Europe this season, as West Ham United won the UEFA Europa Conference League and didn't qualify for Europe domestically; it means every win by an English club will be worth slightly less to the coefficient score because it's an average of eight clubs rather than seven. The last time England had eight clubs in Europe, in 2015-16, it only finished third in the season's coefficient ranking -- though both Southampton and West Ham failed to make it through the qualifying rounds. This season, all eight teams will take part in the group stages of one of the three competitions. England's position was further strengthened when LaLiga side Osasuna failed to make the group stage of the Europa Conference League. On only two occasions in the past eight seasons has a league finished in the top two coefficient places without a full set of teams in the group stage -- both times being the Premier League: 2018-19 (Burnley did not qualify), 2015-16 (West Ham did not qualify.) All things considered, it would take a very poor season for the Premier League not to get five places. Brighton & Hove Albion and Villa, along with Newcastle United who could be handed a difficult Champions League group, would have to struggle badly to put England's fifth spot in serious doubt.
