lol! Chelsea's data shows we should be 4th - Pochettino https://www.espn.co.uk/football/story/_/id/39838139/Chelsea-data-shows-4th-pochettino Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino has said that he believes his side should be higher in the Premier League standings, adding that data indicates their results have not matched their performances on the pitch. Pochettino's expensive squad have struggled for consistency this season and are 11th in the league standings with 39 points from 27 games, 17 points fewer than fourth-placed Aston Villa. Chelsea have a poor goal difference this season but their lack of goals has largely been caused by their own profligacy, with the club ranking fourth in the league for big chances missed. They are also ranked fourth in expected goal difference, according to data firm Opta, behind only Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool. "We know really well what we are doing. That's why I laugh. I don't take it personally when the fans say that [criticise]... If you look at all the data, in the table we should be in fourth position," Pochettino said. "But for different reasons, we are not there. What the data means is that we are in a good way. In which area do we need to improve? It's things [that will come] with time. We need to compete better, small details. "You can only get this with experience with time playing together. It's easy to find the data when you want to kill someone. But when the data is good and reflects the team is doing well but for different reasons we're not getting the results we deserve, [we should] trust in the process."

Xabi Alonso to stay at Bayer Leverkusen amid Liverpool interest https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68692969 Xabi Alonso says he will remain in his role as Bayer Leverkusen manager next season as he believes the club is the "right place" to be as a young coach. The Spaniard had been heavily linked with the manager's job at Liverpool since Jurgen Klopp said he would stand down at the end of the season. "I am convinced it is the right decision, I am happy," said Alonso. Leverkusen are on the brink of a first Bundesliga title and unbeaten in all competitions this season. Former Liverpool midfielder Alonso, 42, was also seen as a candidate to take over at another of his old clubs Bayern Munich, whose manager Thomas Tuchel will also leave at the end of the campaign. Alonso said he had informed Leverkusen's directors of his decision to stay at the club last week. "We have had a lot of speculation regarding my future," he said. "Until now we have had so many games, been pretty busy and focused, and I wanted to reflect during the international break and take a decision. "The players gave me so many reasons to keep believing in the team - for their commitment, for their desire, for their hunger to have a great season. My job is not over here." Balague column: 'Alonso feels time is right to end speculation' Signed from Real Sociedad in 2004, Alonso went on to make 210 appearances for Liverpool and won the Champions League with the club in 2005. He left in 2009 to join Real Madrid - another team he has recently been linked with - and moved to Bayern five years later before retiring as a player in 2017. Asked about interest from two of his former clubs, Alonso said: "It wouldn't be correct of me to talk about other clubs when they are in this situation. For sure there are clubs I have a strong link [as] I played there. So I respect them. "[I have] the conviction I am in the right place at Bayer Leverkusen and I want to keep growing with the club, growing with the players. "We have speculated enough. I want to enjoy wherever I am and I am enjoying it at Leverkusen." Alonso moved into coaching with Real Madrid's Under-14 side in 2018 and followed that with three years in charge of Real Sociedad's B team. In October 2022, Leverkusen gave him his first managerial role in first-team football and, having taken over with the club second from bottom in the Bundesliga, Alonso led them to a sixth-placed finish. In his first full term in charge this season, Leverkusen are 10 points clear of champions Bayern with eight games remaining. They are also in the semi-finals of the German Cup and quarter-finals of the Europa League. Klopp 'understands' Alonso decision Liverpool boss Klopp says he can relate to Alonso's decision to stay at Leverkusen and cited his own experiences as a manager. "He is doing an incredible job there," said the German. "Leverkusen has a good team and they will probably keep the team together. That's a possibility and not all years it is like that, so I understand that he wants to do that." Before his move to Liverpool in 2015, Klopp started his managerial career with Mainz before leading Borussia Dortmund to back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012. "Being at a club in a similar situation [to Alonso], I did pretty much the same and I never regretted it," he said. There is a chance Liverpool and Leverkusen could meet in the Europa League final in May, in what would be Klopp's final game in charge of the Reds. Liverpool are set to consider other candidates to replace Klopp, with Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim and Brighton's Roberto de Zerbi reported to be among their main targets.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2024/03/27/Chelsea-romeo-lavia-ruled-out-rest-of-season/ Romeo Lavia has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a setback in his recovery from injury – meaning he will have played just 32 minutes for Chelsea in the entire campaign. Chelsea paid £53 million to sign 20-year-old Lavia from Southampton ahead of Liverpool last summer, but the midfielder has been struck down by injuries. An ankle injury meant that it took Lavia four months to make his Chelsea debut as a 58th-minute substitute in the victory over Crystal Palace in December. But Lavia suffered a significant thigh injury during that cameo and has not played since. On Wednesday, Chelsea confirmed that the Belgian has suffered a setback in his recovery and has now been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign. Lavia is just one name on a long list of Chelsea players who have been out with injuries this season, which also includes Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Christopher Nkunku, Lesly Ugochukwu, Levi Colwill. Carney Chukwuemeka and Ben Chilwell have also been out, but have recently returned. The Chelsea statement said: “Midfielder Romeo Lavia is to unfortunately miss the remainder of our 2023-24 campaign following a setback in his recovery. “Recent medical assessments have confirmed that Lavia, who sustained a significant thigh injury against Crystal Palace back in December, will not feature again this season.” Lavia’s absence will invite more scrutiny on Chelsea’s medical department, which has seen the resignation of long-serving medical director Dimitrios Kalogiannidis this year. Chelsea have advertised the fact they are looking to appoint a new head of performance medicine on the Linkedin website. The advertisement for the first-team role, for which the salary is listed as ‘competitive’ says: “This is a key role to the club and requires a collaborative, committed and professional medical practitioner, who can be a great teammate. The role will include but not limited to providing injury or illness assessments, undertaking player signing medicals and assisting in decision making and rehabilitation management of medical issues when required.” It adds: “We want to deliver football medicine and performance sciences differently. To create and be an integrated, open-minded and performance support focused team behind the team. We seek to empower our staff, and our model is evolving as we seek to bring in new approaches and thoughts. “We are looking for someone who can build rapport quickly with staff and players, and be a clear communicator to allow all involved to be fully informed of players’ health status and readiness to play.”

Fans turn on Chelsea owners and make it clear that they “never will be” welcomed https://www.caughtoffside.com/2024/03/27/Chelsea/ Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has been a fan of the multi-club ownership model ever since acquiring the West London club but it looks like it is blowing up in his face. BlueCo bought a majority stake last summer in Ligue 1 side Strasbourg to kick-start their multi-club project but the fans of the French outfit have never accepted the Chelsea owners. There was resentment toward the idea from the start and it has just got worse amid poor results, criticism of their youth-first transfer strategy and fury among fans about a lack of communication from the owners There will be a protest march before Strasbourg’s game against Rennes on Sunday and the Ligue 1 club’s largest fan group, Ultra Boys 90, have said that BlueCo “aren’t welcome and never will be”. The group have also released a statement this month regarding their new owners, in which they said via The Standard: “Racing is now nothing more than a financial asset, owned by an investment fund that already owns another club. “Multi-club is killing football, and we’ll fight it!” Chelsea and others should be stopped from owning multiple clubs Strasbourg are currently just four points above the relegation zone in Ligue 1 and face a battle to avoid dropping down to Ligue 2 throughout the rest of the campaign. Multi-club ownership should be banned in football as all it does is make the big clubs stronger while destroying the progression of the club being bought. For example, Strasbourg can’t grow and challenge for titles in France when their purpose now is to serve Chelsea. The same goes for Red Bull and the City Group. The concept is very unfair on the fans of the club being bought and it is one of many things wrong with modern football.

Chelsea could be busy in the centre-backs market amid Leny Yoro links https://thedailybriefing.io/i/142996862/Chelsea-could-be-busy-in-the-centre-backs-market-amid-leny-yoro-links Some Chelsea fans have been asking me about links with Leny Yoro, the young centre-back who has been doing fantastic with Lille and who could be one to watch for the summer. The reality is that the situation is still the same as I’ve been mentioning for months - Real Madrid are seriously pushing for Yoro, while PSG will do their best because they already wanted Yoro last January. Chelsea are following the situation, but there are no concrete talks, nothing else. Despite what may have been written elsewhere, I’m not sure there’s much to report here for now. However, I see Chelsea busy with centre-backs in the summer. There will be movements in that position, priority to the outgoings and then Chelsea will consider incomings but that could be one more position to follow in the summer. There is nothing concrete yet in terms of negotiations, as far as I know.
