Has Hudson-Odoi’s career reached another crossroads? https://theathletic.com/2081646/2020/09/22/callum-hudson-odoi-chelsea-lampard-future/ Chelsea’s season is only two games old and the statistics make grim reading for Callum Hudson-Odoi already. The England international has played just 10 minutes for the first team — as a late substitute at Brighton & Hove Albion — and speculation over his future at Stamford Bridge is mounting once again. Only last week, Bayern Munich, the club who tried to lure him away from Chelsea last year, were linked with a loan move. Normally, any concerns over a lack of game time at this stage would be dismissed as being premature, yet not in Hudson-Odoi’s case. He has been on the fringes of the first team for three months now and it’s only natural for a player to worry. At the beginning of the year, he started six matches in a row. It must feel like a distant memory now. A hamstring strain brought that run to an end and he has been in the first XI just once since the draw with Leicester City in February. Another minor injury sustained before the 2019-20 season resumed in June didn’t help his cause. But out of the 1,350 minutes Chelsea have played after the restart, Hudson-Odoi has been on the pitch for just 203 of them — 90 of which came in the Champions League dead rubber against Bayern Munich last month (Chelsea went into the second leg of the last-16 tie with a three-goal deficit). There might not be many people of a Chelsea persuasion looking forward to the Carabao Cup game at home to Championship side Barnsley on Wednesday night but you can be sure Hudson-Odoi is. It might give him a proper chance to impress from the outset, rather than just a brief cameo. Even then, it might come too late. Sources have told The Athletic that his representatives are considering setting up a meeting with the club within the next week to discuss the winger’s situation and how much of a role he has. Another has claimed that Chelsea are already in the process of arranging a loan elsewhere and things could be finalised by the weekend, although this has been denied by people close to Hudson-Odoi. You can understand why his camp would want talks with the club. If Hudson-Odoi isn’t playing regularly while Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic are injured, what chance will he get when the duo are fully fit? Hudson-Odoi’s hopes of representing England at the European Championships next summer are going to be affected by a lack of game time, too. It’s not as if Chelsea have impressed in their first two outings, either. The 3-1 victory at Brighton was a good result but not a good performance. There were signs of encouragement during the 2-0 loss to Liverpool but once Andreas Christensen was sent off — a moment which didn’t help Hudson-Odoi’s chances of coming off the bench — the game swung against them. The 19-year-old is desperate to prove himself in a Chelsea shirt. He is aware of the criticism from supporters since he signed a five-year deal 12 months ago — The Athletic wrote in December how he’d been speaking with team-mates about the abuse he was getting on social media. During the brief break between the two seasons, he undertook private training sessions to get in even better shape. It looked to have paid off too, given the way he performed in Chelsea’s pre-season friendly against Brighton, plus the England Under-21s’ victories over Kosovo and Austria earlier this month. It is fair to say his potential has yet to be fully realised. A serious achilles injury sustained in April 2019 didn’t help. But it is worth pointing out that the teenager already has a credible eight goals and 11 assists from 62 appearances. That means he is either finding the net or creating a strike for a team-mate at a rate of almost once every three matches. That would explain why several clubs are currently monitoring Hudson-Odoi’s situation. Indeed, The Athletic has been told that a major club — not necessarily Bayern Munich — will make a big push to sign Hudson-Odoi this week. So what does coach Frank Lampard do now and why is he using the youngster so sparingly? He was asked about it before the Liverpool game due to the reports emanating from Germany about Bayern’s renewed interest. He said: “I’d be surprised if any player is not disappointed when they don’t play games. With Callum, he has to focus on the work he puts in on the training ground day in, day out. I’ve said it quite a few times. I have to think about how players trained, how they play within the team, how we work on the ball and how we work off the ball. “I have no favourites. I don’t lean on people because I like them — I lean on people because I want them to be successful, which will hopefully make everybody here happy. “Callum is a young developing player and a lot of talk has come his way because of the way his career has gone at a young age. The facts remain the same for all young players: they have to work every day to put themselves in the frame to start.” It is understood that Lampard has pulled Hudson-Odoi aside for a talking-to — positive or otherwise — at the club’s training ground on a few occasions over the last 12 months to trigger an improvement. Given his notoriously hard work rate during his playing days, that is going to be a characteristic Lampard will expect from every member of the squad now he is in charge. Hudson-Odoi didn’t help his cause in May when he made front-page news following a rape accusation. The allegations were soon dropped but a meeting of some sort took place with an individual late at night when strict lockdown rules were in place. Mason Mount also failed to follow the guidelines two months earlier and it didn’t affect his appearance record. However, Mount’s “crime” was having a kickabout with West Ham United’s Declan Rice. Hudson-Odoi and Mount were guilty of the same offence, but one might suggest Hudson-Odoi’s faux pas was more irresponsible. By all accounts, Hudson-Odoi has been showing a lot of effort in training sessions. Perhaps it’s simply a case of winning Lampard’s trust back, on and off the pitch. But it had better happen soon — or the possibility of Hudson-Odoi going elsewhere for the campaign might just become a reality.

potential Mane-style wingers (some are stretches or have issues) IMHO Mane, btw, IHO, is the 2nd best player in the EPL atm after De Bruyne, as much as I hate Liverpool, I so admire Sadio none of these are already superstars, so no Mbappe (who is better than Mane and anyone else anyway) Sancho, Gnabry, etc bold are the closest to him, in terms of not that well known and/or experienced and who have similar skillsets watch Krépin Diatta (top pic) and Mohammed Daramy (bottom pic) especially Sarr too, obviously Ousmane Dembélé (I still think he can explode in to top 20, 25 player on the planet, but he needs to get his shit together fast) Ansu Fati Rodrygo Vinícius Júnior Bukayo Saka Moussa Diaby Callum Hudson-Odoi Takefusa Kubo Leon Bailey Allan Saint-Maximin Samu Chukwueze Gabriel Veron Maxwel Cornet Jérémie Boga Ismaïla Sarr Krépin Diatta Dodi Lukebakio Antony Calvin Stengs Pedrinho Tetê Raphinha Jonathan Bamba Javairô Dilrosun Paulinho Marcus Edwards Reiss Nelson Moussa Djenepo Luis Sinisterra Jovane Cabral Jérémy Doku Mohammed Daramy Willem Geubbels Noah Okafor Rabbi Matondo

30 dregs/not needed/too old soon/simply not good enoughs we have to dump or in some cases may dump this window or the next two CHO (hopefully comes good) and who to keep out of Rudiger/AC/Zouma are the only question marks in my book, plus damaged goods RLC is so close to being on the chopping list, or needs to be loaned out for one or two years (this and maybe next if it was up to me) to see if he is ever going to recover, which is a damn shame Tiemoué Bakayoko Emerson Michy Batshuayi Davide Zappacosta Danny Drinkwater (think we end up absolutely eating most of the £63m we shit away on his fee and wages) Jorginho Abdul Rahman Baba Victor Moses Kenedy Marco van Ginkel Juan Familia-Castillo Charly Musonda Jr. Matt Miazga Lewis Baker Jamal Blackman Lucas Piazón Jake Clarke-Salter Izzy Brown Luke McCormick Jacob Maddox Ross Barkley RLC (perma damaged goods I fear) Rudiger? (1 has to go, probably 2) AC? (1 has to go, probably 2) Zouma? (1 has to go, probably 2) CHO? (if no improvement, but surely we have to try to get him up to the level he was showing before the injury) Kepa Marcos Alonso N'Golo Kanté (deffo needs to be gone by next summer at the latest, he is no longer WC and hurts the team when he is rammed into the formation, I do not care if thsi makes me hated here, I am not backing off it, he is not a holding DMF and Lampard has no clue how to use him with the players we have at present, he will be 31 next season, towards the end, and he is injury prone and is plummeting in value right before out eyes) Willy Caballero (obviously will be gone next summer, zero chance we keep and play a 40 year old GK)

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Alex Telles hopes to seal Manchester United move from Porto this week Talks for Brazilian left-back are advanced but fee not settled Telles’s time at Porto suggests he will score and set up goals https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/sep/21/aston-villa-sign-bertrand-traore-from-lyon-transfer-window Alex Telles is hopeful of sealing a move to Manchester United from Porto this week and becoming Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s second signing of the window. Negotiations for the 27-year-old Brazil left-back, who has a release clause of €40m (£36.7m), are advanced. United are attempting to drive down his price to a maximum of €25m because Telles is in the final year of his contract. The player’s salary at United would be about £75,000 a week. Telles, who won his sole Brazil cap against Panama last year, would provide competition for Luke Shaw and pose a greater goalscoring threat than the England international. Last season Telles, who takes penalties, scored 11 times in the Primeira Liga and made eight assists. In Porto’s opening-day 3-1 win over Braga on Saturday he scored two penalties and provided the assist for Sergio Oliveira’s strike. In 158 Premier League appearances for United Shaw has scored once and made seven assists. Solskjær’s only signing of the window has been the midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax.

Official: Roma Signs Marash Kumbulla The 20-year-old defender is now officially a Roma player. https://www.chiesaditotti.com/2020/9/17/21439812/roma-marash-kumbulla-transfer For much of Serie A's abbreviated summer vacation, common thought prevailed that Marash Kumbulla, Hellas Verona's 20-year-old Albanian centerback, was leaving the club after only one season, likely heading to the warming embraces of Antonio Conte and Inter MIlan. For reasons unknown, that move never materialized, leaving Kumbulla's immediate future uncertain. However, given everything we know about The Friedkin Group's style of business (or don't know, to put it more aptly), Roma may have been angling for Kumbulla all along. And whether their leg work began weeks ago or just within the past 72 hours, it worked: Moments ago, the club officially unveiled Kumbulla as a Roma player, who they will acquire initially on a two-year loan, with multiple Roma prospects heading in to Verona on their own two-year loans. Per the official release: As part of the negotiations, two-year loan arrangements for players Mert Cetin, Matteo Cancellieri and Aboudramane Diaby to go in the opposite direction and join Verona have also been agreed. When the costs of all loans are weighed against each other, the net cost to Roma is €2 million. The overall transaction also includes various obligations, based on the meeting of certain targets, to make all four transfers permanent. Assuming the four deals are all completed, the net cost to the Giallorossi will be €13.5m. That's definitely a more complex deal than we imagined just a mere 24 hours ago, but by including those three young players, Roma were able to drastically cut down the actual cash exchange in this deal. While we were pretty intrigued by Çetin's potential, Kumbulla is clearly the superior player at this point, so losing out on Çetin is essentially a wash. A product of Verona's youth academy, Kumbulla made his professional debut during with a 17 minute came during 2018-2019 season, but really broke through to the first team this past season, making 26 starts in all competitions for the Mastiffs. Kumbulla will join an incredibly young back line in Roma, liking up with 21-year-old Roger Ibañez and 24-year-old Gianluca Mancini, as well as (for now) veterans Federico Fazio and Juan Jesus. Hopefully, we'll have time before the season to really delve into what makes Kumbulla such an intriguing prospect, but as you can see in the video below, he's got the goods, showing an impressive sense of timing, space and anticipation, in addition to some pretty slick tackling technique; you'll notice how seldom he goes to ground and how composed he is when dispossessing in the defensive third. It was an unexpected signing, but Roma's capture of Kumbulla could be a game changer for a Roma side that seems to be getting younger by the day.

Liverpool ‘agree £36m deal’ for Sarr despite Jota signing https://www.football365.com/news/liverpool-agree-36m-deal-ismaila-sarr-despite-jota-signing Liverpool have reportedly “agreed a deal” for Ismaila Sarr, despite completing the signing of Diogo Jota last week. The Reds were interested in the Senegal international before he joined Watford last summer for a club-record £30million, and have continued to be linked with the winger ever since. Their deal for Jota was expected to end of their interest in Sarr for the time being, but Jurgen Klopp is still keen on the 22-year-old according to France Football. The report suggests Liverpool have made a breakthrough in negotiations and have agreed a deal with Watford worth between £32million and £36million. Sarr put Liverpool to the sword in Watford’s 3-0 win over the Reds at Vicarage Road in February, their first defeat of the season. Earlier this summer, Sarr made it clear he would be open to joining Liverpool where he could team up with “big brother” Sadio Mane.

Barcelona's Suarez furious after club backtrack on transfer to Atletico Madrid https://www.espn.co.uk/football/soccer-transfers/story/4187745/barcelonas-suarez-furious-after-club-backtrack-on-transfer-to-atletico-madrid-sources Luis Suarez is furious with Barcelona after the club backtracked on an agreement to let him leave for free when it emerged he was close to signing for Atletico Madrid, sources have told ESPN. Suarez is now considering holding a news conference alongside his lawyers if the situation cannot be resolved to give his version of events. He believes a verbal agreement reached with Barca this week to terminate his contract should be honoured. After being told he could leave the club by new coach Ronald Koeman last month, the striker's legal team had been negotiating the recision of their client's deal with Barca. A breakthrough eventually came Monday. Suarez would give up a percentage of the money owed to him in the final year of his contract and Barca would let him leave for free, as long as he didn't join certain clubs. Real Madrid, Manchester United, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain were among those named in the agreement, but not Atletico. Meanwhile, sources told ESPN that Atletico had reached an agreement with Suarez on Monday and hoped to finalise the transfer as soon as Alvaro Morata's loan move to Juventus was confirmed. However, sources told ESPN that news of Suarez's pending move to the Wanda Metropolitano saw Barca put the brakes on the termination of the Uruguay international's contract.

Frank Lampard 'changes his mind' over Declan Rice after Chelsea's loss to Liverpool https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/frank-lampard-changes-mind-over-22724927 The Blues have been linked with a move for the England midfielder in the past but may now ramp up their attempts to sign the West Ham star Frank Lampard has reportedly urged Chelsea to make a move for Declan Rice and has changed his mind about how he intends to use the England international in his side. The Blues have long been linked with a move for Rice, who has impressed for West Ham over the past few seasons in spite of their struggles in the Premier League. Initially it was reported that Lampard wanted to convert Rice from his central midfield position into a centre-back to act as cover for the likes of Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma. But according to The Athletic Lampard has changed his mind following his side's disappointing 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, and wants Rice to sit just in front of the back four for his team.
