I can't think of any better replacement to makalele than essien and mikel , and carvahlo was a beauty back then but he was not the main reason we were unbeatable . i think it's more than one factor that leaded to us being unbeatable back then:

  • We were not called a big team yet , so opponents usually used to play their normal game against us but now they have the extra motivation of playing against the champions and they play more defensively.
  • We played with a style that suited our players more , as it got the best out of each and every one of them.
  • We were a very hard team to score against , not because makelele and carvahlo but because of mourinho (give a look at real or inter last year.)
  • we had the ability to punish other teams on the counter , and we always had that extra fear factor of mourinho , that resulted in other teams not knowing how to play against us.

but the main reason is (Robben - Duff - Cole) , they were so quick on the counter , had amazing skills and loads of creativity , we lost all of our 3 creative players and since then we asked functional players like lamps and Drogba for creativity .

with no creativity in the team , even if we had the best deference and midfield in the world , it won't be hard to score against us as other teams will have nothing to worry about , they won't worry to try something different because when they lose the ball they know they will get it back and that there are no Chelsea players capable of making a decent counter attack.

the only way i can see us getting back to our glory days is getting 2 decent wingers/playmakers and getting a decent manager (andres Boas)
