Middlesbrough goalkeeper Ross Turnbull is a target for Chelsea.

The Daily Mail says Chelsea’s list of replacements for a back-up goalkeeper to replace Carlo Cudicini did include Middlesbrough’s Turnbull, out of contract this summer, but his mistake for Salomon Kalou’s second goal on Wednesday did not help his chances of a move.

Chelsea and Newcastle are both looking to sign Middlesbrough goalkeeper Ross Turnbull, skysports.com understands.

The 24-year-old is out-of-contract in the summer and has thus far shunned any attempts to keep him at the club.

This is mainly due to the fact Gareth Southgate dropped him earlier this year in favour of Brad Jones and Turnbull has been warming the bench ever since.

Turnbull won many plaudits at the start of the season before he was axed and now the interest in his situation is growing.

Skysports.com understands that Chelsea and Newcastle are leading the chase, although a number of other clubs - including Scottish champions Celtic - are also hot on his trail.

Chelsea are keen to bolster their squad with young English talent and Turnbull fits that bill and would provide excellent back-up to number one Petr Cech - something they are short of since selling Carlo Cudicini in January.

Newcastle's interest comes through their respected goalkeeping coach Paul Barron - who spent a number of years at Middlesbrough before moving to St James' Park and he played a major part in Turnbull's early education in the game.

Have to agree that Joe Hart should be our top goalkeeping target and we should use him like Manure do with Foster. Only difference between Turnbull and Hart is that we would actually have to pay for Hart and Turnbull would be a free signing. Even though we should still target Hart he is worth the fees and we might get a bargain cos he will be a surplus after they sign Buffon and Casillas :P

Chelsea are close to signing the Middlesbrough keeper Ross Turnbull on a free transfer. Turnbull has turned down a new contract at the Riverside, where he has been since he was a schoolboy, despite only making a few appearances for Boro.

He has been out on loan for most of his senior career, but was given a chance to fight it out with Brad Jones this season for the first team place, but Jones was chosen, and he has spent yet another season on the bench. He refused a new contract so that he could choose his next club.

He is likely to remain on the bench at Chelsea, as Petr Cech is expected to stay in as Number One at Stamford Bridge.

Looks pretty likely if you ask me. First 2 signings of the summer Sturridge and Turnbull. Certainly will not get a lot of people excited but very solid signings and possibilities for much bigger things later in their Chelsea playing days....

Still think there could be another Englishman comming in, maybe Johnson or possibly Ashley Young.

So has Hilario actually been released?

According to reports, although it wouldn't suprise me at all if we did. Although he is a solid keeper we are clearly looking forward, and could do with someone to give Cech something of a challenge.

Chelsea are closing in on Middlesbrough goalkeeper Ross Turnbull.

Chelsea are interested in Turnbull, 24, as they look to increase their “home-grown” quota.

They want back-up for Petr Cech and have also enquired about Portsmouth’s Bosnian-born Canadian keeper Asmir Begovic.
