Home renovation by Paloma Bau designed as "ode to the sea"

https://www.dezeen.com/2024/11/07/casa-ona-renovation-paloma-bau/

Textured tiles and exposed surfaces feature in the rehabilitation of this historic home in Valencia completed by local interior design studio Paloma Bau.

Originally built in 1925, the studio aimed to improve its dark and heavily partitioned interiors to transform the space into a modern and functional home for its young owner.

Keen to preserve Casa Ona's "Mediterranean essence", Paloma Bau retained and restored the home's existing heritage-protected facade, which is adorned by turquoise tiles.

This included recovering the original shape of the windows, which had previously been altered, as well as installing new wooden frames shaded by traditional wooden slatted blinds.

"Casa Ona is an ode to the sea and Mediterranean fishing traditions," studio founder Paloma Bau told Dezeen. "It's a home inspired by its beaches and traditional architecture, adapted to the owner's lifestyle."

"Textures, natural materials and neutral, calm tones coexist with colour and traditional elements that pay homage to the owner's maritime origins."

Inside, the home opens up to the living spaces, where a large, tiled island divides the open-plan kitchen from the living room and adjacent dining area.

Exposed wooden beams feature in the space and are complemented by simple white walls and carpentry. Sand-coloured flooring runs throughout the home and is chosen to reference the local beaches."Besides restoring the value of the facade, we exposed the wooden structure and vaulted ceiling inside, revealing both its beauty and the defects that have emerged over time," Bau said. "Nods to different coasts appear in the application of colour, finishes and textures."

Situated off the kitchen, a storage room is concealed behind a panel of permeable wooden slats and contains ample storage space along with a small bathroom.

An en-suite bedroom and office are hosted at the home's rear, where the studio retained an exposed, load-bearing, brick wall that adds texture to the surrounding spaces.

Existing openings in the wall connect the bedroom with a walk-in closet that runs alongside the bedroom and adjacent bathroom.

Paloma Bao is an architecture and interior studio based in Valencia.

Other residential renovations recently feature on Dezeen include a historic red-brick home in Montreal updated by Diandra Maselli and a renovated Barcelona apartment divided by a gold-leaf wall by Raúl Sánchez Architects.

Zenith’s new Defy Extreme Diver offers a bold, fresh look with a white dial

A new Zenith Diver timepiece and a new stylish dial

https://www.themanual.com/fashion/zenith-defy-extreme-diver/

Zenith-Defy-Extreme-2-1.jpg?resize=1000,

The first modern Zenith Defy timepiece debuted at the Watches and Wonders 2024 event in April 2024, and due to its modern features, it generated a lot of hype.

To live up to its reputation, the brand added another watch to the collection, the Zenith Defy Extreme Diver, which has a stylish white dial and is popularly known as the Zenith Defy Extreme Diver.

This new watch is the real definition of ‘extreme’ modifications, just as the name suggests. For starters, it has a bezel characterized by smooth and angled cuts that accentuate the watch’s geometric design.

Zenith-Defy-Extreme-e1731162675692.jpg

Apart from that, it is equipped with a 42.5 mm casing made from robust titanium for enhanced durability. Since this is a diver’s watch, it can go to deep depths of up to 600 meters. Most components on the watch, such as the helium valve and the front bezel, are designed to handle deep diving activities.

While the watch was designed for divers, it also has a stylish appearance that makes it suitable for day-to-day activities.

The white dial on the watch is accentuated by a sunray finish that reflects light stylishly. It is also worth noting that the sunray finish is complemented by Zenith’s star symbol, which gives the watch a signature-like kind of allure.

In terms of the overall performance, the Zenith Defy Extreme Diver is equipped with the El Primero 3620-SC movement, which offers a 60-hour power reserve.

This timepiece is available in three different strap options and retails at $11,300.

JJJJound Subtly Drop a Made in Germany adidas Superstar

https://www.sneakerfreaker.com/releases/jjjjound-made-in-germany-adidas-superstar-price-buy-release-date/

e50392ce1beccde1fe272ef8dc896927c83fd1da

Few collaborators have been as prolific in recent years as JJJJound. Establishing a reputation as a go-to source for style inspo, the Montreal minimalists are now hooking up with adidas yet again, this time taking the toolkit to the 1982 version of the Superstar for a drop that remains even more low-key than previous efforts.

A premium product manufactured at Team Trefoil's home in Germany, the Superstar 82 follows suit from JJJJound’s previous adidas Samba colab and is composed of luxurious-grained leather uppers in a decadent and creamy off-white hue. As expected from JJJJound, simplicity remains the aim of the game, so all of the Superstar’s hallmarks are present here, including the piece de resistance: the shell toe. Elsewhere, classic black Stripes and a blacked-out heel tab work in tandem with the lighter uppers, while gold-foiled branding marks JJJJound’s co-sign on the laterals. A hint of the pair’s brown leather lining also wraps around the collar, once again calling back to the Made in Germany Sambas that dropped in April.

So far, the design studio are yet to tease the JJJJound x adidas Superstar on their own channels, but Montreal-based retailer SSENSE did subtly drop pairs on their site overnight. Rumour has it that an adidas CONFIRMED drop will follow, so stay locked for release info as it comes in.

The best Secret Santa gifts under £10

Here’s our pick of the best small gift ideas for stocking-fillers and Secret Santas (that’s work colleagues sorted!)

https://www.thetimes.com/article/2bfbcdbf-7436-4753-8138-8ec507260b27

Whether it’s an office Secret Santa, a stocking filler or a starter for 10, budget gifts don’t have to be labelled under cheap and cheerful. From elegant homewares to chic jewellery there’s a whole load of wallet-friendly gifts to hand out this season.

For the gourmet in your life, try Poon’s award-winning chilli vinegar dressing or maybe a chocolatey Italian treat from Selfridges — for some reason nothing says Christmas quite like an Italian baked good. A surprisingly affordable interiors knick-knack always goes down well too — Sarah Raven’s bud vase or vibrant salad servers by Zeal are practical and pretty.

If you’re on the hunt for festive-friendly gifts, John Lewis’s marbled bauble or a delightful hand-painted Christmas card from Scribble & Daub might be just the ticket. For those who want a gift to pamper, No7’s sheet mask, a luxurious hand cream by Bramley or richly coloured Palette nail varnish will surely satisfy. And a little jewellery is never a bad idea. Eighties-inspired door-knocker earrings from Stradivarius or a tennis bracelet from Philip Jones are the fashion baubles to snap up.

Many a Christmas day has been saved by the phrase “It’s the thought that counts”, but with any of these little treasures that won’t be necessary.

An upgraded family home in Glasgow is on the market for offers over £1.55m

A couple’s seven-bedroom villa in leafy Pollokshields was renovated with the help of a family member in the interior design business — and it shows

https://www.thetimes.com/uk/scotland/article/an-upgraded-family-home-in-glasgow-is-on-the-market-for-offers-over-155m-j3llm7jw5

“Idon’t know what I’ll do because I’ve been a full-on rugby mum for the last ten years,” Jackie Thompson says. She and her husband, Steven, are preparing to leave their seven-bedroom baronial-style villa in a leafy pocket of Glasgow’s Pollokshields and become empty-nesters.

Their two sons are now grown-up and have more or less moved out. Rugby balls are no longer being booted across the back garden, nor squads of ravenous teenagers assembling around their dining table after training sessions. So the couple have decided it’s time to move on after more than a decade spent living in their “absolutely blessed” family home, as Jackie calls it. “I couldn’t have dreamt of anything more in a house. It gave the boys a vivid memory of what a family home is.”

be4d9090-59a6-4681-a910-3e1da019883b.jpg

Jackie and Steven are both from the village of Bothwell in South Lanarkshire. She works in the pharmaceuticals industry and he’s the chairman of a label-printing company that services Scotland’s whisky industry. They made their move to Nithsdale Road in Pollokshields in 2012 with a view to cutting down their sons’ journey to school in the centre of Glasgow, and with the benefit of enjoying “a city lifestyle in a lovely conservation area in suburbia”.

“Our boys got to have that independent life that they would never have had if we were out in Lanarkshire,” Jackie says. “I’ve got a couple of smarties now — they’ve got some street smarts about them.”

f20dbc3a-1935-4c13-a1c0-16b61c93df1a.jpg

While it required little structural improvement when they bought it, the house felt “a bit tired” after years of being rented out, and it needed a new cosmetic lease of life. Luckily, the Thompsons had just the man at hand, in Steven’s father, Jerry, a successful interior designer of 50 years’ experience with his company 3 Design Scotland.

public

Jerry helped them stylishly sweep away some of the baronial gloom of the old home with a bespoke refurbishment that made the most of existing features, from the original sweeping timber staircase and ornate stained-glass windows to a top-of-the-range Bang & Olufsen sound system that was installed by a previous owner — the former drummer in the Scottish rock band Simple Minds. “When you put it on the whole house reverberates,” Jackie laughs. “It’s uber-cool.”

As the boys moved into their teenage years, the back garden became their domain. A miniature rugby pitch was complemented by a barbecue area with pizza oven, and a heated pod with decking, bar and wood-burning stove.

Just because home life is going to be quieter for the Thompsons going forward, it doesn’t mean it need be boring. They’ve decided to upsize rather than downsize, and are planning a move to a small country estate in Perthshire, while at the same time buying starter flats in Glasgow for their sons, and a pied-à-terre for themselves. “There’s still some life in the old dogs yet,” Jackie says.

George Street and Princes Street, along with several historic and cultural attractions of Edinburgh’s city centre are only a few minutes’ walk away, whilst the neighbouring area of Stockbridge is a vibrant hub with excellent amenities such as galleries, bars, restaurants, coffee shops and a street food market. Ample green space surrounds the area with parks, cycle paths and private residents parks.

CAN relinks Verdant House in Stoke Newington, London, with garden using statement green window

Architectural studio CAN has extended a terraced London house with a palette of wood and hemp and a large curved window that aims to redraw its connection to the garden.

The Stoke Newington home, named Verdant House in honour of its jungle-like outdoor space, has been expanded with a timber-framed side and rear extension to meet the needs of a young family.

Verdant House's original floor plan included a long galley kitchen with a low ceiling and a "failing" conservatory that was too hot in summer, too cold in winter and cut off the garden from the main house.

"The clients wanted a more interconnected ground floor that was much more focused towards the garden and allowed them to adapt the spaces as they grew as a family, open-plan but flexible," CAN director Mat Barnes told Dezeen.

CAN has introduced an open-plan living, kitchen and dining area in the timber-framed extension, within which the floor is lowered by 20 centimetres from the rest of the home to create a sense of openness.

Its interior is dominated by natural materials including an exposed glue-laminated timber (glulam) structure, which CAN said aligns with the client's request for a "forest-inspired" palette.

The extension's structure comprises 85 per cent glulam while the exterior is clad in panels of corrugated hemp fibre designed to change colour and texture as it weathers over time. It is topped with a meadow-planted roof.

Verdant House's centrepiece is its sweeping curved glass window looking out to the garden, which references a Victorian shop front. It is intended to reconnect the home its outdoor space after the old conservatory had left them "disjointed".

"Many Victorian shops used curved windows on either side of a central doorway, which allowed uninterrupted views into the shop window as a customer entered," explained Barnes.

"Why not do this from the inside out?"

The window's position next to the oversized glazed door now gives the owners dual aspect views,  meaning they can view their garden up close and the northwest sky at a distance from
the same chair.

It was custom-built for the house and presented the team with several challenges, including making it large enough for strong visual impact but small enough to squeeze through the tight terraced house.

"As it's such an unusual item and we only found one supplier who would make it for us at a cost that was sensible," Barnes added.

To add flexibility to Verdant House's open-plan layout, CAN introduced full-height hemp fibre curtains and Douglas fir shutters that allow the family to open and close off spaces as their spatial needs change.

The heart of Verdant House is now the light-filled kitchen, featuring a roof light supported by bolted green trusses. CAN also designed cabinet fronts, crafted from chiselled oak boards and stained with rich, dark-toned linseed oil.

"The project was about creating a soft but high-impact design that is personal to the client and celebrates natural materials," said Barnes.

"Every part of this home is crafted with intention, from the trusses in the kitchen to the way materials and textures come together to create a space that reflects the client's tastes and the way they want to live."

Barnes founded CAN in 2016, having previously been an associate at Studio 54 Architecture.

His first solo projects include a blue and white striped house extension and a renovation of his own home in south London complete with a fake Disneyland mountain.

David Thulstrup converts 19th-century Copenhagen warehouse into apartments

https://www.dezeen.com/2024/11/18/david-thulstrup-transforms-19th-century-warehouse-copenhagen/

Danish designer David Thulstrup has renovated a 218-year-old canal-side warehouse in Copenhagen to create four apartments defined by "quiet luxury".

Named Strandgade, the warehouse was one of several on the Christianshavn canal originally used to store goods, with this one specifically built with floors for animal hides to be hung to dry.

Thulstrup applied a natural material palette throughout the renovation of the heritage-listed site, responding to the building's industrial history by highlighting its original features.

Large structural pine beams that hold up the floors were stripped by hand to remove chalk, acrylic paint and resin.

"The quality of the original beam structures was so high that they were preserved – decades of paint was removed with soap to reveal the beautiful wood underneath," Thulstrup told Dezeen.

"I wanted to reveal the beauty of it all, using a small palette of original materials out of respect for the building, such as rendered walls, simple pine planks and Finnish stone," said Thulstrup. "Everything relates to the historical building."

In keeping with the beams, Dinesen Douglas pine planks were used for the floors, which were laid in varying widths of 15, 20 and 25 centimetres – in line with the heritage requirements.

Thulstrup explained that the floors were finished in white to add lightness to the space, intended to offset the height limitations of the ceilings.

Layers of new additions were stripped back to reveal the building's structural brick walls, which were internally rendered in clay.

"Having the render, or 'puds' in Danish, on all the surfaces was important – it's a natural breathable clay made of Danish chalk and sand, and the only one we are allowed to use in protected buildings in Denmark," said Thulstrup.

Due to the heritage-listed status of the building, restrictions were in place that limited changes to the floor plan, meaning no new walls could be added.

"Working on a transformation like this and collaborating with the Agency for Culture and Places in Denmark involves accepting the challenges of restraint and practicing a deep restraint for the building and its history," stated Thulstrup.

Each of the 220-square-metre apartments has an open-plan layout, with two central cubes incorporated – one housing a stairwell and the other for fitted kitchens and bathrooms.

Meanwhile, a lift clad in Sorensen leather as a nod to the history of the building as a former hide warehouse, was also added.

Elsewhere, the colour scheme and interior finishes were designed to play into the building's previous use, with a tan and white cow-print daybed incorporated alongside leather seating and chairs upholstered in fluffy white material.

Subtle elements were added to blend in with the scheme, such as windows finished in steel-painted graphite grey and custom aluminium lights.

"Overall, there are earthy hues of ochre and orange, along with light grey tones and pale woods, in contrast to the blue skies and the changing colours of the Christianshavns canal," said Thulstrup.

"All the choices I made were about exclusivity and quiet luxury on this very special canal-side site."

Baltic brown granite discovered as a load-bearing foundation in the original building was repurposed and used to clad the bathroom walls and fittings, while freestanding baths were also made from blocks of the stone.

"It was about elevating everything – we could have chosen a standard bath but making it from one solid block of the same stone from the original building connects it directly to the history as well as being a luxurious contemporary insertion," Thulstrup stated.

On the ground floor, common space for residents was created, with a kitchenette and large dining table, wine rooms, a sauna and storage space.

Comprised of narrow red bricks, the floors continue from the inside to outdoor spaces. A courtyard with an outdoor shower was intended for use after swimming in the harbour, while there's also a berth for a small boat.
