Disaster if they don't. Maybe ed Woodwards plan all along was to win the league of big spenders and then get a good night sleep.

I'm not so sure they will, they have a better chance, but if LVG sticks to his 3-5-2, they won't click.

I saw Man u fans saying Ed Woodward is a genius, is there more than one Ed Woodward? Lol

As much as the 3-5-2 has been a failure for United so far, I'm curious to see if it would be any better when they get their FBs/WBs back from injury. With Valencia and Young currently in those positions, it's a recipe for disaster.

Did it ever actually work that well for Holland though? yes it destroys Spain but it was hugely thanks to the effort of a hungry Robben with a point to prove after that miss in the final 2010, also a fuck up by Casillas and a fluke/wonder goal that will never happen again from RVP that actually started their comeback. Since then it has been anything but excellent, barely won against crap Australia, winning a game that Chile cba to compete 100%, luckily beating Mexico who dominated majority of the match, drew 0-0 against Costa Rica and Argentina, creating next to zero clear cut chance in that Costa Rica match.

Before that they played 433 and Strootman injury forced him to change it to 352. Now with their current set up lets say Shaw as LWB and Rafael as RWB, they might improve defensively but attacking wise, are they that much better?

No, the 3-5-2 didn't exactly work out too well for them despite achieving a third place finish. It was a mixed success to say the least with Van Gaal only changing it when the Netherlands were in a desperate situation but otherwise, he stubbornly stuck with the system even when it's not working.

In the case of United, one could argue that they have better players than the Dutch, at least offensively anyway but once everything settles down for them, I would like to see if they are still THAT bad or will do much better. They do have some good players after all.

Alex Ferguson in May 2012: "We invest in young players. That is what we are good at - we're not like other clubs who can spend fortunes on proven goods. We know that Manchester City are going to pay stupid money, pay silly salaries and all that. We can't do anything about it."

So?

Its ferguson who said that and under him, I doubt they would spend crazy...probably more than he used to, but not as much as under lvg...and certainly not such pointless transfers...

In his final season Ferguson spent 24m on RvP: a player in the final year of his contract and on a 'silly' salary. I'm sure he's still giving Man Utd advice and Rooney is paid 300k, a player in a deep decline held the club ransom and they caved. Man Utd as a club are bullshitters and they've found out this summer they're just like every other club; if they want top talent they have to pay up like everybody else.

Vidal and Benatia didn't want to play in England.

And the price would have increased significantly as soon as they heard MU's name because they know MU are desperate. Juve wanted 50m-60m for Vidal, Roma 40m+ for Benatia but as soon as Bayern came in it was just 25-30m.

De Gea

Rafael - Jones - Rojo - Shaw

Herrera - Blind - Strootman/Vidal

Rooney ADM

Falcao

They could look like this in Jan or next season, wouldn't be surprised if they also tried to get Rues. It does feel weird seeing how quickly united have changed, so used to them having a British core.

No room for Reus. Will LvG stop with the 3-5-2?

So, the point is that sanctimony goes out the window when you're trying to level the playing field. City (and Chelsea) did what they had to do to attract players and now United are having to find out the hard way just what even a season of being noncompetitive entails, even if you're Man United. Fortunately for them, they'll be able to sustain it if they get back quickly enough.

Btw, this is the same Ferguson who made Ferdinand the most expensive defender in the world at the time, and who made Rooney the world's most expensive teenager at the time. They've spent an average of £28m (net) per season since the Glazer takeover in 2005, Chelsea £49m net per season since 2004; City £55m net per season since 2008; Liverpool £28m net per season since 2010. From 1992-2005, United were in fact spending more than any other team in the league (bar Liverpool) - £9.5m net per season vs £10.5m per season. Chelsea? £5.7m net per season. City? £3m net per season. Hardly non-competitive. Only Arsenal (net spent £5m per season from 1992 onwards) can make that claim. He's right that they've given chances to younger players in the past but those circumstances were entirely different. For the record, at the time he made this statement, Man United were already spending more on wages than Chelsea (£182m vs £176m; City £233m) and historically United have been among the highest paying clubs in the league (as you'd expect - top players don't play solely for some love from the Stretford End, after all) so this is little more than petty point-scoring, which has fallen flat on its face now that the mighty have fallen.
