Old Chelsea Stories

I was watching the Semi Final 2nd leg of the Athletico game with a mate of mine and his old man. After the game his Dad was telling us all sorts of stories from games back in the 80's. He uses to stand in East Stand, Gate 13 which apprently was the 'naughty boys' section if you like :-D

A couple of stories that spring to mind is how Micky Greenaway hired a train to take the boys to Wolves when we were banned from away games. And how we hadn't scored a goal in 4/5 games and when we did the place went spare... we lost 3/4-1 but at least we scored a goal :-D

I was glued to his every word all night and was just wondering if any of the 'older' generation have any similar stories to tell because i would love to hear them :-)

My Dad used to be involved in a lot of the 'naughty stuff' in the 80's at Chelsea and was friends with Micky Greenaway and years later he met my mum and moved out of South west London, thank God. and after my sister was born they moved into a bigger house, i was around 6 at the time, and i still remember my dads face when he saw who his new next door neighbor was! it was a man called Cass Pennant, who was a leader of the Inter City Firm! a man who my Dad had a few 'incidents' with over the years! luckily this was a time when that chapter of their lives were behind them, so in the end they got on really well, and i remember as a kid they would sit in my back garden and talk about the old times and i would sit there and listen to all their stories!

My dad also told me back in the 80's away to West Ham their fans would throw coins at the Chelsea fans so when the they tried to retaliate the police would start hitting everyone with their truncheons and my dad told me while everything was kicking off he looked down and saw one of his friends on all fours picking up all the coins! and he would do that at every away game when fans threw coins at them!

He cant remember the guys name but said his arms, back and chest were full of Chelsea tattoos and after games my dad would ask him how many coins he got and he would shake his pockets full of coins!

Found this on Mickey.

Mickey Greenaway is probably the most famous Chelsea supporter.

He was born in 1945 and raised in Billing Street, a shout away from Stamford Bridge. His adoptive father was a Chelsea fan and managed to get a young Mickey mascot for a match in the glorious 1954-55 season. Together with a few other like minded supporters, he got the Chelsea fans to meet and sing under the old corrugated steel roof shelter at the Fulham Road End, in an effort to help focus and amplify their songs and chants. They decided to name this construction "The Shed" and one of Mick's colleagues had a letter published in the Chelsea programme to this effect. Mickey introduced many songs including "One Man Went to Mow" to the Bridge supporters repertoire, but will always be remembered for his "Zigger Zagger".

Sadly, following serious health problems, Mickey prematurely passed away in 1999. A legend.

I think because he didnt have any family and lived on his own! i will ask my dad about that though.

If you could find out it would be great. I'll have to ask my mate's dad when i see him also.

For such a well known man that really surprises me.

Brilliant article on Chelsea in the 90s, before all you glory hunters :D

Wow. Brings back some great memories. In particular the 98/99 season. The first I can vividly remember taking note of every game, the league table etc. That was the first Chelsea side I ever saw. What a team and like the article said, deserved to win the title.

IMO those were our BEST days ,, the days before had been hard to bear at times .. and the 90s laid the ground for the arrival

of Roman and our greater triumphs ... But beating Middlesboro in the Members cup was a great memory. And the arrival of

Hoddle followed by Gullit then Zola and Vialli really set the scene

No disrespect I was on that train to wolves, it wasn't Micky who organised it, it was after our previous trip to Burnley I think they took everyone's contact number,Mahoney us the week before and we had to go some guys cars at Stamford bridge, pay for the tickets and get on the train, I remember the news cameras at the station making us give a big cheer as we were going. Bit of mayhem at Wolves, lots of chasing after the match, cop punched me in the stomach, good old days... Hank

The megastore have brought out some handsome replica polo shirts. They have also re released the 1974 away shirt which is selling for £20. Also some geezer on Ebay is selling the old red, white and green scarfs. I have to buy one of them to replace the one I lost in 1978.

Yeah, blinding piece.

I was well pissed off the way the demise of The Shed end was handled by Bates. As I recall, no word that it was coming down at that point, not as I recall anyway. I turned up at the old office's a fortnight before the start of the season and it was gone! From what I heard, only rumour obviously, was that Bates wasn't chancing what happened at Millwall on the last day of The Den, given that The Shed had long since had the 'notorious' tag. That end of the stadium now is just all bollocks, the pads and the hotel and all that pony, when it should have been a huge big fuck off end, a proper replacement for The Shed, a lad Dortmund.
