cosmicway 1,333
Some of you like maths here ?What is the best football rating system in the world ?I know of elo ratings. Those are compiled for national teams and also for clubs.Top of the nations list is currently Brazil with 2113 while England stands in an unflattering 1909. Greece at 1790.In the clubs, Bayern Munich top the lists with 2116 while Chelsea are at 1922.I have a suspicion the club ratings are less reliable than the national teams ratings.I used the match data and elo ratings in the mathmatical analysis site zunzun.com and worked out formulas for the 90 minute result probabilities when the difference in elo ratings is given (as the elos site does not give you the formula). The win-lose probabilities based on elo ratings had been worked out for chess and you can find them in various sites but not football. Also FIFA have a new scale of their own but it's uncalibrated. The old FIFA scale was unbalanced. USA was near top, but their opponents were Canada-Virgin Islands and other weakies.

cosmicway 1,333
Alright, here is a problem for heavy types: Find out the impossible finals in this year's world cup. The details of the draw are displayed in the FIFA site. (I 'm going to google it now, because maybe it has already been worked out). edit - no there are no impossibles at the start

Hawww.When I was schoolboy our physics-chemistry teachers were useless and the English teachers looked like gods. But in pure maths it was the other way round !The story of our head (nicknamed "the Dilliger") became a film, made by one of the boys who later became movie director.I have it somewhere in the back of an envelope. I will look.
cosmicway 1,333
In obvious notation:BS / BB = (BS + GS) / (BB + GB)since BB = B - BS and BB + GB = T - BS - GS, it becomesBS / (B - BS) = (BS + GS) / (T - BS - GS)so I raise the fractions and BS . T - BS^2 - BS . GS = B . BS + B . GS - BS^2 - BS . GSsome eliminations, so BS . T = B . BS + B . GSCall BS / GS = xThenx . T = B . x + Bx = x . (B/T) + B/T = 0.55 . x + 0.55x = 0.55/0.45 = 1.
