Chelsea face Swindon in Capital One Cup

The 2013/14 Capital One Cup season will soon commence for Chelsea as they have been drawn to face League One side Swindon Town at the County Ground in the third round with the game to be played on 24th September at 7.45pm UK time. The Blues will no doubt fancy their chances to win this tie but Swindon would be motivated themselves as well as they look to take down a Premier League giant at their own ground and Jose Mourinho will be keen to ensure his players avoid any complacency and becoming a victim of a giant killing in the cup.

Mourinho’s side was given a ‘bye’ in the first two rounds and entered in the third – along with Man United, Man City, Tottenham, Arsenal, Swansea and Wigan – having qualified for Europe while Swindon defeated Torquay United 1-0 and Queens Park Rangers 2-0 in the first and second round respectively to reach this round.

Chelsea have played Swindon Town 13 times in all competitions and the former have the upper hand with a record of 9 wins, 2 draws and just 2 defeats. The last time these two sides met was in the 1993/94 Premier League season where the Blues completed a league double over their opponents, beating them 3-1 away before sealing a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge. However the one and only time both sides faced each other in the League Cup, it ended in a 3-0 win for The Robins back in 1963.

The Blues are no doubt one of favorites to win this competition especially under their current Portuguese manager and will be looking to add another League Cup success to the four they have won previously with the last coming in the 2006/07 season. Swindon Town, on the other hand, will hope for a fairytale story like Bradford City did last season but go one step further and win the competition, adding to their one and only success back in 1969.

Other notable 3rd round ties see Manchester United host Liverpool at Old Trafford, in what arguably is the tie of the round. There is also a repeat of last season’s FA Cup final as Wigan travel to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City while Arsene Wenger takes his Arsenal side to the Hawthorns to face West Brom and their North London rivals Tottenham will also play a Premier League side in Aston Villa at Villa Park. Another intriguing tie would be Newcastle going head-to-head against Leeds at St. James’ Park. The full draw for the Capital One Cup 3rd Round ties can be seen here.

Well Swindon. I must say, I do not know much about them. I just hope, their pitch is mowed properly & I won´t see none of those cow pastures of last time.

Swindon is an ok place and decent ish ground.... Plenty of good looking blonde women there as well, so Torres will feel at home!

Well, then I am happy to know it. Ferda should stick to playing football though. Chelsea definitely could use his goals, instead.

Complete shithole imo, though the ground isnt too bad

Still looking forward to this. Think we will have an allocation of 3300 - 1200 in Arlells Stand and 2200 in the Stratton Bank

Have to agree. The people who escape Swindon usually say they're from Wiltshire if you ask them.

Imagine this could be on tv to capitalise on the Di Canio/Mourinho dynamic....because, ya know they're both controversial and they're both managers (sort of).

Could well be -do you think Di Canio could make a reappearance at the old club then ?

Wow....that's a real facepalm moment.

Gonna slowly walk away from that moment. Completely forgot that he left....even though he was at the Bridge last season with Sunderland.

Anyway....

Great old school away draw, also a chance to give a couple of the kids a game. Delighted with the draw.

Hopefully the likes of Chalobah and Kalas (if fit) will get a game but Jose has always seemed to like putting down an early marker in this competition. Wouldn't be surprised to see a fairly strong team out.
