Kojo 4,676
Well the funny thing is you can say all this, yet Fellaini would probably come here and play well. And then what?, you're going to go the long and hard route again to try and justify your point?, like you did with Gary Cahill?. Or like how Dzeko is better than Falcao.Oh yeah and i read it again.
SeB 1,281
@SeB, absolutely fantastic article! You know I often criticize you for making your opinion and assumptions try to look like actual facts, but what you wrote about Fellaini is top class.Did you made the charts yourself?Congrats!P.S: You just made me ashamed of writing an article about Neymar or Falcao, I will start right after the holidays...I did the charts with powerpoint, that's really not hard at all. The longest thing is collecting the datas and get the figures actually. Proportionally, writing isn't that long.Coud you do something on Falcao/Cavani, which would be the better, for which system etc... ?

DDA 9,938
I have always hated the casual use of statistics when analysing a players contribution to the game of football. Yes the numbers don't lie but statistically our midfield should be demolishing every given game in the Prem. Fellani has a huge impact when playing for Everton simply by using his sheer size and technical ability. He would without a shadow of a doubt be a great asset to our team. We need a power player in the middle of the park who can rough other teams up. Who does that now...Mikel? Mata? Lampard? Oscar? Rami is the only midfielder who really russles the oppositions feathers. This is why for me buying Fellani would be an awesome signing. As for me i like Fellaini but i don't think he would be as great as he is at Everton as he would be here, not by a long shot.

He will obviously do something whilst on the team and probably do a better job than Ramires or Mikel are doing. Though i wouldn't expect to see the Fellaini we see at Everton where he is all over the place creating damage wherever he goes.
Rmpr 8,977
Coud you do something on Falcao/Cavani, which would be the better, for which system etc... ?I was thinking of doing a comparisson with Lewandoski/Dzeko/Falcao/Cavani, but I would need to have a lot of studying to do. The only players I really really know are Falcao and Dzeko, Cavani and Lewandoski I only watch every now and then. I am also worried that doing too many players in one article might get too superficial (or absurdly long).Since I am on summer break, I have enogh free time. I dont bother writing a lot or taking my time to do so, but I must decide what to do. I just want to spend my holidays with my family and friends before watching games 24/7, though. Neymar is not urgent like a Striker, but I would love to do it. Specially because he is Brazilian and I could speculate on the False 9 aspect as well. Shogun 721
@Shogun, @Atholy, What's your opinion? Long biaised crap article? I've not read it, I might read it if I find the time as it looks a well written and well informed article. Though even if/when I read it I won't be offering any counter arguments, I don't think there could be anything that persuades you he's right for Chelsea and none of us truly know whether he will be unless it happens. More importantly, it would seem a bit strange of me to try to persuade people that their club should buy my club's best/second best player. It's very much theoretical, the charts are just there to illustrate the points I make, I could have not put its in but it would have been dull to read. The what you mean about the ball winner in midfield, when do you have to win the ball? When you obviously havent... Most of the time we have it. I'm happy enough with Ramires/Mikel incase we have to recover it, Ramires has the sheer aggressivity and Mikel the positional sense to intercept and block the main passing lines.I don't see Fellaini helping for that, as I say in my article I think both him & Ramires share the same aggressiveness. But Ramires can press high up and also cut in the back of the full back (something I could have add actually, the latter thing)
Henrique 9,133
I dont believe there is a single post about Fellaini in this section, when we already have a topic about him in the transfers section. Dont get me wrong, but it seems its a way to get noticed easier, because a post in transfer section dont get the same amount of view you have when you creat your own topic to your post.By the way, stats to prove a player is not better than what we already have is far from being a wise move, since he plays in another team, and as I said before, I really cant understand it, the moderators are not doing a great job at all, I remember when Benitez was appointed manager, we had 3 new topics about the same subject every single day, and only after one week onf of the administrators did the job. I rate most of your writings very highly and find myself nodding in agreement to most of what you have to say. I just don't feel that to disect a players conttibution to the game, you need numbers to do so. That was all. Secondly, yes you do make a very good point that most of the time we have the ball but what you fail to mention is against what calibre of opposition. Against the top teams in all competitions we are very often overpowered in midfield and therefore see less of the ball. You being th great observer of the game should know this. To address this situation I PERSONALLY feel that we need a powerfull midfielder and striker to win the ball whn we don't have it in order for us to dominate. To address this situation I PERSONALLY feel that we need a powerfull midfielder and striker to win the ball whn we don't have it in order for us to dominate.Don't get me wrong, I don't disagree with the fact we need impact and a ball winner against certain oppositions. My point here is that I think Fellaini isn't the player we would need because he's not able to make that good pass forward after recovering the ball. (No point to compare him to Fabrice Muamba but you surely got my point ?)That's a bit similar to Mousa Dembele and Ramires actually, both are box to box, can get past the first opponent... But Dembele's last services are poor, wasteful, predictable, disappointing whereas Ramires has proved numerous times how good he is at it.Chelsea don't only need ability, we need the very best in each position like in the past. I'm not broadly against signing Fellaini for a broken price to be a squad player. But we all know it won't happen like that, he'll end up at Anzhi where he'll run the show.Feel free to disagree, discuss, debate (that's also the point of the article, I express my view so I can discuss about it)... I do feel he's not good enough to be a starter at Chelsea
The only place to be 11,313
I do feel he's not good enough to be a starter at ChelseaBut Mikel and Ramires are? There's a distinct lack of soul in your writing. Maybe it's the language but it reads like a collection of statistics with very little interpretation except to support you pre-existing biases. There's no talk about heart, effort and personality in the article, presumably because there's not a statistical measurement for that.Statistics have their place, but there's also something called the 'eye test'. It's what football fans develop over time, seeing players and learning about the intangibles, the X-Factor.....IT. I know the statistics for Mikel are good. I know he has a wanktastic pass completion percentage but the guy has played over 200 games and there's still question marks. What's the statistical measurement for body language? What's the statistical measurement for giving a fuck and getting stuck in?When I see Fellaini play, I see a guy prepared to put his heart into the game and work for the team, carrying it on his back if he needs to. That's something I don't think you can measure, but it's something every team needs.Statistics and numbers have their place, but footballers are people at the end of the day. The first thing you need to do is watch them, otherwise you just become a weird guy analysing passes completed like AVB. Is that really how you want to turn out? Is that really how you want to turn out?I think Mikel and Ramires are good enough to start at Chelsea. The whole "soul" thing is overrated. I mean you don't win football games with enthusiasm & aggressiveness, let alone on a full season. The most pragmatic team will most of the time eventually win it.The key is organisation, shape... Enthusiasm, team spirit etc is what allow your patterns and your players to gel together. But you can't do without organisation.I watched 114 Premier League games last season, I play football myself and I coach youths, is that enough for your "eye test" ? Just asking.About Fellaini, I made my point in the article: what's the point to recover the ball if you can't use it (because I think his passing is not good enough) ?There's a scheme about the different phasis of a football game, a sort of circle with the different options starting from "losing the ball"Losing the ball => teams recovers his shape => ball is recovered => ball is retained => attacking penetration => finishing..^.................................................................................................................V...........................................................................|..................................................................................................................|..|_________________________________________________________________|I do feel that Fellaini can win the ball but can't contribute to retain it, I don't say that based on figures, I say that based on the games I saw. Feel free to think he's the best passer in Premier LeagueWhy when there's a chart with figures, people are forced to throw out the same crap about "stats don't make the whole football blabla...".I don't mention the charts in the article, that's not: chart 1: Mikel is better than Fellaini. Chart two: Mikel is better than Fellaini, Chart 3 blabla so conclusion Mikel is better
