Thats why in Europe they want to introduce a sexier suit for basket players, and I support the idea. I would love to see girls from East Europe in hot suits playing basketball.

American women were the only ones to take it seriously 10-20 years ago. The Title IX ruling (non-Yankees, Google it because it would take forever to explain here) also gave women's football a developmental structure, something most other countries lacked. That structure is unique compared to the rest of the world, because it is based in American universities. However, other countries have put in their own work at that end and what we are seeing now is a correction. The USA will continue to be competitive in women's football, but they won't romp through tournaments anymore.

Our women's team is better because in the US soccer is deemed a "girls" game and most of our most talented male athletes have never played it!! I hear it over and over again on sports shows how some big meat-head American won't let his son play soccer because it's a girls' game and men that play aren't real athletes. i heard this out of my male students too. I was always quick to put them in their place and that was why I became a favorite teacher among our soccer players. I think it is the mentality of the US that we will support our women in soccer but when our men play the majority of the fans in the stands are for the other team!

A bunch of "butch" women playing .... hmmm do you really believe that? because it is very small minded! Some of the women playing are down right gorgeous.

I concede. This completely blew my logical, history-based answer out of the water. Don't even bother reading my post now.

I agree the USWNT is still one of the best in the world. The difference is where we used the be the clear cut #1, that is no longer the case. Other countries have caught up to us and if US Soccer doesn't get their sh*t together starting at the youth ages, they will get passed by. Where you live is there buzz about the World Cup? I live in Southern CAL which is one of the supposed hot beds of soccer talent in the US. The buzz is pretty quiet.

When Marta played the the LA Sol in Los Angeles, it was sad to see the game attendance. Home Depot Center parking lot and stadium was like a ghost town. One half of the stadium was closed off and fans could only sit on one side. And the one side wasn't crowded.

The USWNT still owe much of their continued success to those who came before them - Mia, Foudy, Lilly, etc. Those women played with skill, technique, and heart. Too often I see the USWNT play a dump and chase game reliant on our speed and size. The USWNT needs to continue to evolve if we want to stay at the top and I have doubts about the leadership of US Soccer being capable of doing that.

Last thing: why is US Women's Soccer so popular in the US? Too many parents looking at soccer as the golden goose for college scholarships for their daughters.

Sounds like a good analysis there T9. I was quite amazed in Los Angeles --that girls/women were into playing the game so much. Was staying in Long Beach and the house backed on to a high school where almost every day women were playing soccer/football. This was quite a while ago, in the1990's about the same time as the cops were playing football with Rodney King

Its taken seriously in other European countries as well Germany -and in Italy at one point the womens pay packets were almost on a parity with the men.

  • 2 weeks later...

im under the impression that if the best women's team the U.S could put together faced a mens league two team in England , the League 2 team would win . Am i completely misguided or is that about the long and the short of it lol ?

Because the US has the infrastructure to train women from an early age (talking mostly about the college game, and somewhat about our investment in the women's national team). Most other nations don't put any investment in the women's game at any level. Hell, a ton of the players in the world cup played footy at US universities.

BTW - that comeback over Brazil was fucking epic!

For those that didn't see it, the US was down to 10 players in the 65th minute, Brazil went up 2-1 in the first couple minutes of extra time, and then with only about 1 minute left in the game this happened...

USA did not pull a Chelsea and won on PKs.

I have seen more young girls take up soccer in US compared to young boys.

Boys are generally attracted to american Football and Baseball while soccer is a hit with girls. At my university I did play soccer with some petite girls who I have seen nutmegging some real tall beefy guys on the pitch (I have been a victim too). They are so slick.!!

Championship players would struggle to get one past Hope Solo, though a physical, lump it forward type of game would work due to sheer size and strength. I'm not sure.

And if US men had a good infrastructure, then soccer would be more popular in the US.

And most likely we would have had more foreigner come to the MLS, like players from South and Central America, because it's more convenient for their family to be in US then europe.
